View Full Version : What do guys think of this Opie and Anthony show?

I was told recently that the comedian Joe Derosa was a guest on their show and he brought up trans-beauty. He mentioned Bailey Jay and myself. It was pretty positive, I mean there was a joke or two, but positive. I then decide to google any other radio shows they may of done on transsexuals. They bring up the marine that recently transitioned then ripped her apart. I just wonder if guys feel that is okay? I mean does beauty give you a pass? Do you trans-attracted boys degrade less passable trans-women?

I've been a fan of the Opie and Anthony show for well over a decade back before their XM deal when they first got the Dallas market. (So 13 or 14 years now...)
I got Eva into them recently. We listen to Youtubed versions of the show literally every day.
You can't beat a show that regularly and heavily features Louie CK, Jim Norton, the late Patrice O'Neal, Jim Florentine, Rich Voss, Ron Bennington, etc. etc. etc. O&A is where all the real comics hangout. It's the only other radio I'll listen to other than NPR programming.
O&A all the way.

I just re-read what you posted... you were asking the guys. Fuck it, I got a dick, I'll go ahead and respond to your more pressing question...
NOBODY is above being picked on for the sake of humor. I listen to a three hour show, hear all sorts of jokes and opinions made about all sorts of folks/situations and I laugh... but if I get offended after one 10 minute bit about some freakin' tranny I'm suddenly obliged to get offended? That would make me the worst kind of person. Screw that, no one is precious at the alter of comedy.

So you purely take it as comedy, because I felt it was a lot meaner than Lisa Lampanelli mean. lol

The meaner the better. The O&A show leaves no stone unturned in the pursuit of lively, entertaining and engaging conversation. Sometimes that means saying awful things if awful things are what it takes to generate the biggest laugh. The folks who really get the show are the the kind of folks who realize what a wasted effort taking themselves seriously truly is. The hosts are just as vicious with each other as they are with any guest or news story, (when being vicious is what makes the most sense for the biggest laugh.)
I make no apologies for them, no backtracking statements. Any show that puts pleasantries aside so real, funny, sad, awkward, dark, etc. conversations can take place are aces in my book every time.
BTW: Co-host Jim Norton hired Eva Lin for his latest comedy special... giving jobs to trans doesn't sound too awful to me.

Do they make ethnic jokes or use ethnicity for comedic fodder?

They cross back and forth over that 'line'. Straight guys who bring up the topic in public of trans-women I think should be more measured in their comments because attacking a TG for her looks is completely different than dogging a random GG.
Overall, it's still a positive that straight guys will even entertain publicly they find ts women...OMG..pretty/sexy/lust objects.
But O&A isn't a show where I would expect to find a deep or mature discussion about trans-women.

On the O&A show, "dogging" anyone's looks is hilarious in equal measure. Humor knows no gender.

Joe Derosa, Jim Norton, and a few other comedians are good friends with Bailey Jay in NYC. They talk about her all the time on various podcasts and shows. Let's face it, she is fucking gorgeous whether she is TS GG or anything else. lol

I bet you think it's funny when blind people get run over crossing the street too.:ignore:
The dudes are shock jocks and make their coin being offensive and subversive.
However it's not how most of act or talk in our public lives.
Transitioning for most TS is about trying to achieve their NORMAL. Straight guys who make fun of someone because of how successful they were (or not) in achieving that goal is nasty and mean spirited.
You're pretty Jamie. You've been able to build a cottage business centered around your looks.
Most the TS who post on this board are generally attractive.

It's comedy. They make fun of everyone. They don't discriminate or single out, as those who hold political offices, who make policies, which will hurt the trans-community.
It's not like Jamie and I are reading Mein Kampf, or listening to evangelical radio, watch the 700 Club...or even watch Fox news. Those I listed, DO have extreme hate towards people like Jamie, people like me, people like Kelly, people like Christian, and people like you. They are the ones to watch out for and to be offended by.
By the way, I don't think Louis C.K., Jim Norton, Bailey Jay, and many others would be on their show and/or associate with them if they were like the hard right media mediums I mentioned above.

I'm one of the most 'clockable' trans on the scene. Kids stare at me, folks pause a second before they say "ma'am", my brother still says, 'he'. I give zero shits about any of that. If O&A or any of their guests tell a funny joke, I'm laughing. That laugh always comes packaged with a giddy spite for humorless, over sensitive pricks.
Saying that they are only shock jocks tells me a few things.
1.) You live in 1997.
2.) You haven't heard the show.
3.) You think something done for entertainment carries with it none of the personality of the presenter.
I'm a pornographer by trade. It takes a lot of hard work and personal input. I do what I do for other people's entertainment. Boil my content down to an empty buzzword.
Also, don't talk about what it is to be trans unless you are one. And even then, only speak of your own personal experience. Not trans? Keep your gaping maw shut.
I bet you think it's funny when blind people get run over crossing the street too.:ignore:

But you have the knowledge to talk about what's racist or not??
Get outta here with that bullshit.
If I was wrong, speak on it. Don't pull that crap that since I'm not one of, I can't have an informed opinion.
That's usually the rhetorical tactic of someone who's argued themselves into a corner.
Opie and Anthony were suspended in 2004 and 2007 for their shock jock antics(encouraging listeners to publicly fuck in a cathedral and some bit with a homeless guy on air).

When you own a radio station, you can decide what's appropriate on air content and what isn't.
There's this little thing advertisers who I guess are all a bunch of 'weak motherfuckers' because O&A were dropped from all their station affiliates before they went to satellite radio
In the current broadcast radio market, Opie and Anthony are shock jocks. The operate outside of what's considered normative broadcast standards.
I didn't call them racists. I think you just did though.

lisa lampanelli was funny when i saw her in 1999 at all the clubs in nyc. 15 years later, her jokes are the same. i was over her before she finally made it big. she is funny the first few min when her approach is unique, but then she is just so one-note that it gets old. how many times can she come up with new names for gays? how many times will she repeat, "once you go chink, your laundry won't stink?"

you actually hit on part of the problem for me. her joke is "once you go chink..." because she started saying that shit in nyc to pander to audiences that take their clothes to french dry cleaners, which are largely owned by koreans in this city, which means she just wanted to lump all asians in as chinks. yeah, it was funny in 1999 at comic strip live after drinking heavily. also, when you see a fat white woman talk about fucking black guys on stage, it is funny...the first time. maybe the 2nd time. but its 2014 and her jokes are stale now.

Stern is old hat. Got tiring after Private Parts, (the movie) came out... Listened to him right up through 9/11 (I was listening as the news came in live that morning) then my boys hit the air and Stern was history in my book. O&A isn't some new show trying to makes waves for attention either - The've been around for 20 years or so. You just don't get these kind of conversations on Stern, (Louie starts in almost immediately with the rant featured in this video.)

Then you haven't actually heard the show. Stern is all about what a chore it is to be Stern. Then there's a stripper, a bitter comic and some complaints about the program director. Robin plays yes man and it all starts over the next morning. Yawn. The greatness of the O&A show is sitting right up there in my previous post. It's as simple as pressing play and enjoying the sound of awesome conversation.

oh, i never said stern wasn't formulaic. both he and O&A are both formulaic to a fault at times. Honestly, to me, this comparison is like comparing leno to letterman. each has their own specific brand and format that they do not deviate from. one to me is funny and the other is crass and stupid and has a big-assed chin. in the former...one just sounds like he is more genuine about his opinions and the others just sound like a bunch of rating-hungry morons.

All this O&A debate is fun.
The fact of the matter is that with their talk of Bailey Jay and other Trans porn stars expands the reach and knowledge of transsexuals. My friend is now obsessed with Bailey Jay even though I told him about her well before she started to appear on Jim Norton show. But if Jim Norton can openly admire transsexuals it is a good thing for the trans community.
