Louis Roederer announced their dislike of purchases of Cristal by members of the African-American community.

stupid in my opinion to single out any nationality, religion, or sexual preference but quite a few designers & companies have practiced this in the past......................

oh well

Its in the New issue of the Economist and he's actually being misquoted by some email forwards going around.

http://www.economist.com/intelligentlife/luxury/displayStory.cfm?story_id=6905921

Asked by the Economist about whether associations with rap stars could affect the marque, new managing director Frederic Rouzaud said: "That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

He never mentioned race.

This is being spun as the new Tommy Hilfilger rumor which also wasn't true.

This is a perfectly understandable comment, and anyone playing the race card on this is a total eejit

The article is quite clear in its reference to "rappers" and makes not reference to race. Furthermore, Rouzaud is correct to be concerned. If I were him, I sure as hell wouldn't want my prestige cuvée associated with rappers either, particularly given the likelihood that not one of them could tell – or taste – the difference between Cristal and a shit sparkling wine like Freixenet (Brut de Noirs, etc.) if their lives depended on it. Besides, Cristal is highly overrated. Krug is the way to go.

hmmm, Im guessing that whoever you mentioned is the company that makes crystal? in which case, if it is, they have every right to not want a particual part of the population using thier product. Im sure in days gone by if you saw somebody drinking that stuff you saw that they had class, rappers, deffinatly have NO such thing. crystal represents old money, who usuall have taste and class, rappers are new money. there is no segment of the population that old rich families hate more than dummies who just get rich quick and spend it all on "ice", cars, and crystal. yech!!!!
I have to admit that I never heard of crystal before I heard about it in a rap song, and when I heard it for the first time I deffinatly thought that it was a new brand of 40.
I guess what Im tryin to say is that who cares if they don't like blacks drinking thier expensive champagin? last time I checked its thier right to BELIVE whatever they wish. its not like abercrombie and fitch doesn't do exactally the same thing to fat people by not offering certian sizes, or polo, by not putting thier logo on clothing beyond a certian size.

-QuinnMy sentiments exactly. Its about time someone came out and disassociated themselves with rappers instead of hopping on the money train and cashing in. Wendy I agree with you also however I wouldn't say every last one of them lacked class, but a large majority do. Just like I wouldn't say every one of them lacks real talent, but a large majority do. When you write a song called "I was gettin some head" the creative jucies runeth the cup over.

very poor and exclusive definition, IMO...having class is the ability to present oneself with taste and manner, sometimes elegance...I'm fairly certain Jay-Z could pull that off...

Actually, there are 30,000 cases of Cristal produced annually (360,000 bottles). Does that make more sense?

People aren't walking into clubs and ordering bottles of Cristal because they like it - they're ordering them because they're expensive and think it makes them look classy - they don't give a shit about the drink (there are better champagnes, at a better price without the mythical "Cristal" name.

In the 80's the wide boys and the yuppies were all drinking Bolly - same thing, they didn't know what else to order and loved the image of automatically ordering the most expensive thing on the menu.

and THAT is LOW CLASS - no matter what you're colour.

Nicely put and seconded. As Quinn, I think it was, pointed out, these numpties wouldn't know the difference between a champagne, a methode champenoise or fizzy gut-rot anyway. Anyway, I'm sorry to disappoint the non-Gallic amongst you, but anybody who thinks the French are exporting their best wines in order for them to be consumed by "le Monde Anglo-Saxon" just doesn't know the French.

I was drinking 2000 St.Emilions last week and 1998 Cahors when driving through France at $22 euro bottles. Bought Grand Cru's in supermarket for 15 euro and excellent Bordeaux's for 2.25 Euro a bottle!

In the US the prices for Napa wines are rising!

But I actually live in Scotland. Just now I was looking for a pleasant wee white to round off the day and was offered a non-vintage generic Cote de Rhone for 8 bleeding quid! I'm presently sipping a very cheerful Chilean Chardonnay that was half the price and very nice it is too.

Cheers!

ahhh my bad...when i was reading latest wine spectator mag it said it only produced 1000 cases...some years when there is bad seasons they produce little or dont produce any. which happened 2 0r 3 times in the 90s....we dont carry it at our place so i dont know too much bout them...napa may be expensive but every high end limited production that comes out of there is sold b4 it hits our pavement.....the rich folks need something to drink round here, lmfao

Cosign. To my mind, this really cuts to the heart of the whole "class" argument. Unfortunately, this type of behavior is all too common with countless brands here in the States, and it's usually demonstrated by people who really can't afford it.

anyway, about the champagne...I don't buy it much, but I love Moet, and you CAN taste the difference between Mo and some Andre or Cooks...I've never fucked with Cristal though, I'm not blowing that much money on 25 ounces of alcohol...

Moet & Chandon White Star is probably one of my favorite Champagnes. It's a quality Champagne that's relatively inexpensive, widely available, and well balanced. Great stuff.

Got this on my blackberry an hour ago, Jay-Z is going to pull Cristal from all his 40/40 club locations.

He's actually doing the general public a favor, the amount they charge for Cristal is more of an injustice than any comment made by Cristal, lol.
