it's similar...

At first I was wondering why you were down in Texas giving a blowjob to a vuvuzela... then I remembered that you're a slut anyway and give blowjobs to anything that will fit in your mouth.

I am Switzerland in this match though. I like hot peppers and fish/chips equally well. I base all competition on food edibility.

You know the strange thing? We could be in the very same bar, watching the match together, arguing about who is going to win.

Who's round is it?

So pleased to know how much you appreciate ancient history, Nikka. We must do lunch soon and discuss the origins of the First World War.

No it was the last time the World Cup tournament was held in Brazil, in the days when the capacity of the Maracana was 199,854. After beating Chile 2-0 England suffered the humiliation of being beaten by the USA 1-0 and then beaten by Spain. Uruguay won the Jules Rimet cup but it was the first World Cup after the War and some teams, like 'Germany' were banned from participating. Details in the wikipedia link. Curious that the Chilean goalkeeper was called Livingstone...

On the one hand yes, the qualifying game is more important; on the other hand there is, or seems to be a crisis in the goalkeeping department for England so this game could help clarify the situation...or not...

No offense intended, I couldn't run half way across the field without needing oxygen but:
As an american raised on the NFL and MLB, I don't get soccer. During the last world cup, someone told me that there was going to be a match between two soccer powerhouse countries, Brazil vs England or something like that. He said it would be one of the best matches ever. I like sports so that nite I tuned in. Now, not taking anything away from the players, they ARE definitely athletes, but to me it boiled down to kick the ball and run. Now I sure there is strategy and plays and all, but all I took away from it was bring the ball up the side of the field, have your guys bunch up in front of the net, kick the ball to the bunch and hope one of your guys head butts into the net.
To me it's 87 minutes of running and kicking with 3 minutes of real action.
And they say baseball is boring, not as boring as soccer.
This is only my opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone.

I've played soccer my whole life so I am a bit biased but I understand your POV.

I think you've really got to understand and appreciate the artistry of the game, as well as the strategy. The game really is beautiful when it is played well... but then again, it can be a snore-fest when it is not. I think it is easiest to appreciate soccer when:

A. kids trying to dribble and kicking anything that moves
B. professional on a world-wide stage

High school, college, even most (US) MLS soccer is not all that entertaining to watch because most players don't have the skill sets developed to make the game beautiful.

When the skills are there though and you've got a talented team, there are few other sports that are just as artistic and stylish as soccer is, imo.

I think therein lies the rub.
You were raised on soccer while I was raised playing baseball and touch football all my life. I guess I understand the nuances of these games better than someone who didn't grow up following it

1st. Touch football is for sissies.
2nd. Just kidding.

Yeah... I suppose it is like that with everything in life... you appreciate the things that you've some experience with. To me, baseball is just an excuse for guys to memorize a bunch of stats and pretend they actually understand them... Although, I still do like the game just because it brings up good memories of going to Giants games in SF way back when with the family.

You've got to give soccer a chance though. I'm lucky up here in PDX (go Thorns!) since we have a freakin' awesome team (Rachel Buehler, Tobin, Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair, etc. etc.) to watch. But, go watch a game or two locally and it will start to grow on you IF you have good players competing.

as a european it is hard for me to stay awake watching the superbowl.
you have to have grown up with a sport or have played it, I think.
it must be terribly boring to watch golf when you don´t play the game but it is fascinating once you know how difficult it is to play well!
my father took me to ajax amsterdam when I was 6 years old, haven´t missed hardly a home game since, it is in my genes!
the fact that a world championship soccer is one of the biggest mediatic worldwide sportevents as is the champions league in europe should mean something!

IT'S CALLED FOOTBALL & HAS NEVER BEEN CALLED SOCCER!
true story

Bollocks.

For all you out there who love to complain when Americans, and certain others, call “Football”, “Soccer”, you should know that it was the British that invented the word and it was also one of the first names of what we now primarily know of as “Football”. In fact, in the early days of the sport among the upper echelons of British society, the proper term for the sport was “Soccer”. Not only that, but the sport being referred to as “Soccer” preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word “Football” by about 18 years, with the latter happening when it became more popular with the middle and lower class. When that happened, the term “Football” gradually began dominating over “Soccer” and the then official name “Association Football”.

In the USA, it's promoted as soccer.
When you say Football in the USA, the NFL immediately comes to mind.
here in New York we have the RED BULLS soccer team and the league is called MLS, Major League Soccer

Chile deserved to win, but 2-0 flatters them. And I think England learned more from this than Chile did.

On English TV they made Alexis the man of the match. BEFORE he scored his second goal.

We knew they are a good side but there are positive things we can take from this game going forward.
We played well, closed them down for much of the game and had we taken our chances the score would have been different so there are positive things we can take from the game going forward.
We not happy to lose but we learned a lot tonight that we can take from the game going forward.
We are a young and evolving side and there were positive things in the game that we can take going forward.

If I might interject.

Scotland 0, USA 0. These days that's a good result for us.

And England were shite last night. Chile took their chances and deserved to win. Fair do's Nikka.

LA Galaxy...they've won a few championships, but I still just can't get into soccer. I was raised on the Dodgers and Lakers (and to a lesser extent the Rams and Raiders); that's why I understand those sports. Baseball in fact is my favorite out of all of them. I used to hold hockey to the same regard as soccer, but around 1995ish I sat down and watched a game...and loved it because I GOT it. So I was happy when the a Ducks and especially the Kings won the Cup.

Of f course I'm happy when LA wins ANY championship, so I was pleased with the Galaxy. I still can't get into soccer though. Don't hate me when I say thepis...but I'd watch the WNBA before soccer. :yayo:

Anyway, forget the round ball for a while - what a feast of rugby, both union and league varieties this weekend, with all four home countries featured in the autumn internationals against top quality southern hemisphere opposition AND the Rugby League World Cup Quarter finals. S' marvellous.

There are several reasons why soccer doesn't work for the present American aesthetic...for one thing, there isn't enough scoring...and all that dramatic rolling around on the ground the players do with every little bump just doesn't look good.

I do see a lot more kids are playing soccer though, which I think is great, but the coaches, omg...some frustrated middle aged guy screaming for an hour straight at a bunch of 10 year olds kicking a ball around, it's all I can do to stop myself from bashing the guy's head in.

That's certainly true. Some of the best soccer matches I've ever seen have been goalless draws or 1-0 wins and they're not boring in the slightest.

On the other hand, I really have tried to get into American Football, watching games in Boston, Dallas, NY and Chicago, but it stutters, with the endless timeouts and halts every time something happens. Part of the beauty of soccer is that, at its best, it flows as well as demonstrating levels of individual skill that few other team games offer.

Tough group for Chile. Tough group for England.
