While it wasn't necessarily my intent to go rocker look when I put this outfit together, I did like the compliments I got while wearing it.

You guys sound great and the show looked excellent...I'll make one comment...you may like it or hate or think I'm an a-hole but I wouldn't even bother saying this if I didn't think you guys had real talent, so here goes:

Every band needs a few songs that have hooks.

Ok...the strongest hook in She Doesn't Like Boys is what you do at 2:27...I know you have this 4 chord progression at the end of the chorus at about 1:10 but you didn't put the vocals over it at that point...I would have built that theme earlier in the song...and at the end, I would have repeated that 4 chord progression with the vocals a few times...perhaps overlapping the vocals a bit, adding some harmonies.

What's a hook... a hook is the lyric of a song that when you listen to it, you know that's the title...it's the part you can repeat to someone and they know what song you're talking about.

A hook can be done with an instrument...it's that part that makes you play air guitar, or the drum riff you tap out on the table.

You know who did hooks? Nirvana. Almost every part of their songs were hooks...lyrical, melodic, instrumental...the songs build you up and bring you back down.

"Here we are now, entertain us" is a massive hook...that weird instrumental part that comes after the chorus...massive hook...the drum riff right before the chorus...

No worries - Thats my metal band so it might be a bit beyond some peoples taste and dont expect a lot of 4/4 pop stuff there.

Tempest's band has a great energy...the musicianship is way up there, including Tempest being a great bass player with fantastic sound.

The lead singer, besides having a great voice, has a presence...he can draw an audience into him...

Hooks doesn't mean pop necessarily...I wouldn't change your style at all...you can have your sound and still have hooks occasionally...Nirvana wasn't pop...Korn wasn't...they had hooks.

That's too much of what is essentially a novelty. That last lit bit at the of the song is just an end-cap... anymore of it would destroy the purpose of its very existence. You remember it cause you only get to hear it once. That's EXACTLY how specialized parts should work. The chorus at 1:10 is the hook. You get that as many times as is appropriate for a 3 minute pop song.

The chorus is always the hook. I usually write chorus-first so I know ahead of time that the song will be properly listenable. I don't write to express, I write to create joy for the ears... in and of itself, that's expression enough. Plus there's always clever lyrics for those that require 'weight' in their pop tunes.

well the pop comment was more of an attempt at humor since Im so far from it but apparently it was a failed attempt at humor LOL

Nirvana was considered a pop band - Kurt hated that was how the public and record companies were seeing his music but its how they were regarded and in the end you cant tell anyone what your music is or isnt - they always decide for themselves.

Nirvana (and Kurt as the lead song writer) was a Hook MONSTER - that guy could spin hooks all day long and its great - more over being POP isnt an insult - it takes a special skill to write deceptively simple songs with a solid hook not everyone can do that - I consider my work with Mercy Kill "Pop" music that just happens to have really loud guitar parts and industrial tracks going on.

Anybody that can write an honest hit deserves respect Pop - Country - Metal whatever... What I dont like is assembly line music, drum machines, sequenced guitar parts and singers that rely on endless overdubs and auto-tune to fix the fact that they really dont know how to sing. Get in the studio - record the songs as a band and get the fuck out and back on stage... too many bands and artists spend months (or more) in the studio working up an epic album then find out they dont stand a hope in hell of pulling it off live.

Nailed it. Very true. Especially the bit about the vocals; it's hard to find someone who can actually sing. A lot of people just want to scream or autotune their vocals and it just spoils the song. Also doesn't work over too great live, which is where it really matters.
