nah ... in Seattle we recycle everything.

When I upgraded last year, I gave my old computer to a friend who scrubbed it and gave it to his 11-year-old neighbor — it was the kid's first computer.

Save your hard drive, get an enclosure, format the hard drive after you move everything you want off of it and use it as a backup drive. Too many good drives gonig to waste these days. There are a lot of good parts, but not being tech savy you waste more money then you should.

no.
why on earth would you do that?

they get cannibalized for parts and built into something new...
or gifted to others that can still find a use for them.

There ain't a hammer big enough.

Take the machine to the field and dish out some old fashion justice.

No, I first empty out the information and then either give it away or turn it in to an electronic recycling center.

My Commodore 64 is still in the closet...and it's fully operational.

Before I moved to Vegas I had to give the TRS-80 CoCo2 away (had to travel extremely light) that was 14 yrs ago. I still head to Goodwill or Savers Thrift when I can to see if I can find one...

are you referring to the fact that you fear the terabyte of depraved--unspeakable filth that you have on it will fall into the wrong hands???

I don't think there's enough scrubbing in the world that would make me feel comfortable about giving my pc to an 11 year old

I just can't part with 4TBs of the "sickest shit ever" on that external hard drive of mine. I hide that shit in the gun safe.

I pull the hard drive and stash it. The rest gets tossed into a heap that I use for parts (fixing friend's computers). I only want to take a sledge hammer to it before the replacement computer arrives. After that, I can be civilized.

so a serious question: If I want to give a young child my old pc (with a working hard drive), how can I be sure all the nasty stuff's been erased?

Search on the web for a zerofill program. It will literally overwrite every bit of data space on a drive with a zero. After that you can reformat and it should be good to go.

Chisel before you scrub, Flabby. Only way to get the worst smears off.

If I need a new computer I build one not buy one. If any parts are worth saving I keep them and toss the rest.

Use this program first. It should erase all of the data on your machine. http://www.dban.org/

I build a new computer about every year and a half. Usually I donate the old one to a local school or non-profit. My current PC is one that I will probably keep for a couple of years though... it is a beast :)
