'The will of God is not entirely clear': Cardinal hints at tough task facing church

ROME — An American cardinal in Rome hinted Sunday at the difficulty of deciding who should be the next pope, saying the papal conclave was a time when “the will of God is not entirely clear.”
Chicago’s archbishop, Cardinal Francis George, (http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/Cardinals-Give-No-More-Interviews-Conclave-Decision-Nears-195539581.html) asked for “help and prayers” as he and 114 other cardinals prepared to enter the papal conclave to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI.
“I ask you for your prayer to help the Holy Spirit to be present among us to open our hearts and our minds to what is the will of God for his people throughout the world," he told reporters after saying mass at the local church assigned to him during his stay in Rome.

He added: "This is a momentous occasion, when perhaps the will of God isn't entirely clear to many of us."
Vatican observers say the choice is wider than it has been in modern memory, with no emerging consensus on who should be the next leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.
George, 76, will enter the conclave on Tuesday afternoon along with fellow Americans including Cardinal Tim Dolan, Archbishop of New York and Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston.
In a sign of the speculation that a U.S. cardinal could be the next pope, there was a huge media presence at the Santa Maria della Vittoria where O’Malley appeared to bring star power to Sunday’s mass.

Strange, that the will of God is very clear and certain when anyone goes to war in "his name", but get round to choosing a new CEO for his Earth branch, and it doesn't come clean.

There is no rule in the Catholic Church that says a Cardinal must be Pope, it can be any Catholic male, including Tony, a taxi driver from Queen's, who, if chosen -for his wisdom and humility I presume- is immediately made Bishop of Rome and dressed in the robes and the white hat and presented to the world in his new name -as long as he is an unmarried virgin of course. Pope Urban VI was the last 'ordinary man' to achieve this in 1378. In the past Pope's used to have their nephews named to take over on their death (Julius II taking over from Sixtus IV is one example), hence the word Nepotism (from Nepito) and even though said nephews were often their sons...
No I am not an expert on Catholic history, I got it from the Telegraph
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/italy/rome/9917841/Romes-Sistine-Chapel-50-fascinating-facts.html

But the Bible does not in fact suggest the 'fruit of the forbidden tree' was an Apple so I don't know how reliable these 'facts' are...

I want either loudmouth Cardinal Dolan or the fella from Ghana to win the hat. Maybe have a 2 headed pope like that movie with Ray Milland and Rosey Grier.

I think they'd have to smoke a lot of Ganja to make that choice Dino. I will bet against this conservative crowd choosing an African. Bet it's time for another italian. Possibly the cardinal from Milan.

The new pope and the Falkland Islands.

Pope Francis, who was born in Buenos Aires and is the first pontiff from Latin America, once told a congregation to "Go and kiss this land which is ours, and seem to us far away" when referring to the Falklands, it is reported today.

Speaking at a service for fallen soldiers, before visiting an Argentine cemetery in the Falklands in 2009, the then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio said: "There are angels who will accompany you, who are sons, husbands and fathers of yours, who fell there, in an almost religious movement, of kissing with their blood the native soil," reports The Daily Telegraph, from comments recorded by news agency Diarias y Noticias.

Now known as Pope Francis, the remarks were not the first time the son of Italian immigrants had waded into the row over the disputed islands.

In a mass in Buenos Aires last year to mark the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, he told veterans and their families Britain was a "usurper" of the contentious islands, according to The Daily Telegraph.

He apparently said: "We come to pray for those who have fallen, sons of the homeland who set out to defend his mother, the homeland, to claim the country that is theirs and they were usurped."

The first Pope from Latin America is said to have told the families of the 649 Argentinians who died in the conflict to remember those who had fallen.

He added: "Many young people were there and could not return. Others returned but none could forget.

"Many scars, many families destroyed by permanent absence or a return cut short. The country needs to remember them all."

"The country cannot exclude from its memory any of those who were called; it has to take care of so many hearts with scars and say thank you, to those who remained on the islands or submerged in water, all of them.

"The country should recognise their scars."

His election came a day after Falkland islanders voted 99.8per cent in favour of retaining British sovereignty in a referendum.

I doubt that the central leadership of the Roman Catholic Church is going to change very fast at all or keep pace with the opinions of their followers, yet religion runs deep for many people.

So while in their individual lives Catholics may use contraception and have contrary views to church on things varying from the acceptance of gay marriage, to women's rights those individuals will continue to consider themselves practicing Catholics and will attend church regularly.

The bigger question is when the church will aggressively pursue those within the clergy that molest children rather than play the denial and delay and deflection that has been the common play book when faced with this behavior from men who are sworn to be celibate but are humans with natural urges that take perverted and regrettable form?

It certainly won't be this Pope and if recent history plays through, the average Pope has been in his 70's upon being named so we are at least 30 or more years from the church even beginning to look at reform of the centuries old dictates that make the Catholic Church both ritually majestic but completely out of the norms of 21st Century realities of many of its followers.

Just my take as an outsider looking in...

OK, Rome's had their couple of days of cable news domination. It's back to business as usual.... no gay marriage, no contraception, no woman's right to choose. a pig in new clothes.
now we can go back to not giving a shit about the Church til the new guy crokes in a few years.

I don't believe it has been mentioned, but nobody from the UK took part in the Papal Conclave, insofar as a direct vote is concerned, the UK was represented by Ireland in the Conclave. This is because England has not had a Cardinal since the death of Basil Hume, the principal Catholic being an Archbishop (of Westminster), it is up to Rome to appoint a Cardinal if it wants to; Scotland had a Cardinal but he resigned just before the Conclave when accused of sex crimes some years ago; a new one was not appointed.

And when they get older they get larger and more powerful. The one that ran our elementary school could remove the liver spots off the back of her hand and fling them at children like Chinese Throwing Stars. She also made Sicilian Neckties out of her long black nose hairs. Her nun shoes weighed 40 lbs each too. Did your Sister Dennis like to menace as well?

Good grief. Can it get any worse? The following article claims that Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the most senior catholic in the UK before he resigned on the grounds of "sexual misconduct" was in a long-term gay relationship himself, despite decades of gay-bashing from his hypocritical pulpit.
