Apparently, that particular sinkhole was caused by water-soluble limestone eroding away below the ground. Around where I live, there are smaller sinkholes caused by poorly maintained water/sewage lines washing away the dirt below the road.

This article is pretty good on explaining sinkholes, which may affected parts of the USA like Florida because of the geology as well as human actvity, notably in the phosphates industry. It does raise some questions about the potential consequence of hydraulic fracturing (Fracking) in areas where the geology and water and waste seepage has weakened the structure of rock...so often it is not one thing, but a combination that eventually leads to disaster, and human involvement is inevitably part of the mix.

Like at Lake Peigneur

This one is a classic, it gets good at about 3 min in, 8 1/2 min total.

This is sort of like a time lapse of many sinkholes, this one had a huge place to drain to so it went fast.

That golf course's ass is almost as loose as yours. The cart woulda fell in you with the bag too. The caddie, the announcers, the table and chairs...
