Hadiya Pendleton, all of 15 years old, was gunned down at a park in Chicago
As Congress holds (http://theweek.com/article/index/239414/watch-gabrielle-giffordsnbspcalls-for-gun-control) a much-anticipated hearing on gun control, there was a disturbing reminder that gun violence in America never takes a break. It's been reported (http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/teen-girl-who-performed-at-presidents-inaugural-events-fatally-shot-on-chicagos-south-side/2013/01/30/82cbffbe-6ae5-11e2-9a0b-db931670f35d_story.html) that Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old girl from Chicago, was gunned down on Tuesday, just days after she performed with her school band at President Obama's inauguration. Pendleton — an honors (http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/01/29/15-year-old-girl-shot-and-killed-in-kenwood-neighborhood-park/)student, volleyball player, and majorette at King College Prep — was shot at a park just blocks away from her school.
According to reports, Pendleton was among 12 teenagers who had taken shelter from the rain under a canopy in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park. An unidentified gunman then jumped the park's fence and allegedly opened fire. In addition to Pendleton, who later died from her wounds, a teenage boy was shot and is currently in serious condition at the hospital.
Details of the incident remain unclear, though initial reports suggest that Pendleton was not the primary target of the attack. Since the school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in December, more than 1,400 (http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2012/12/gun_death_tally_every_american_gun_death_since_new town_sandy_hook_shooting.html) people have been killed in gun violence across the country.

Not sure what the problem here in Chicago is, but we have a major one.

That is the second honor role student killed here in the last two weeks. Not gang affiliated but just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

One woman buried her fourth child this week from gun violence here in Chicago. It was her last child, he was 24. No one should have to bury one kid but it was her fourth.

17 year old got gunned down across the street from the park where I grew up in the same spot where a police officer was shot to death over his motorcycle 2 years earlier. The playground bears the cop's name.

We have had over 40 murders in January alone here in Chicago.

I go to Caps meeting and am active in community organizing. At this point it seems to be a lot of pissing into the wind.

how about this story?

A gunman boarded a school bus in Alabama, took a 6-year-old boy hostage, killed the driver who tried to save him and is now holding the boy in an underground bunker

Thanks Dino it is appreciated. The more I think about it, the world of HA and its surrounding affilliations is an escape from a lot of this bullshit.

I just noticed this on HA. I'm wondering why it's got no coverage by mainstream news media. Are we so numb that a murdered 15 year old girl is less important than Hillary Clinton's TV interview or yet another A-Rod story?

That kid may have gone to medical school or become an engineer. Can't begin to imagine what her family must be going through.

It is very sad news.
This violent crime has skyrocketed after tearing down the massive Chicago housing projects. Cutting back on police has not helped either.

this is why the gun debate gets all fucked up.
Hidiya wasn't killed by an automatic weapon, and I bet neither were any of the other 40 victims. They were killed by hand guns. So maybe we're going after the wrong weapons, or maybe all guns should be illegal.

This gets no coverage in the mainstream media because it happened in Chicago, the most dangerous city in the US and Obama and Rahm's hometown. Chicago also has the strictest gun control laws in the country.

In short, this young girl's murder doesn't fit the media's narrative, so it gets ignored.

This problem did not occur over night and will not dissipate over night.

Access to guns is a major part of the problem. Chicago's police commander just got back from being summoned to Washington to meet with the President when this tragedy occured. One of the factoids tossed out was how many guns have been removed from the street recently compared to New York. In just 2 districts in Chicago more guns were confiscated than all of NYC. All that figure means is that our guns are concentrated in specific areas. More than likely black and poor. I need to reseach which ones they were.

Chicago was designed to be racially divided. Highways, trains and other boundries were laid out to keep ethnicities apart. Over the years poverty has taken root in some areas while the best of the neighborhoods (doctors, lawyers, financiers etc) are creamed off the top and relocate to other, safer more prosperous areas . Those left behind have far fewer options for carving out a great life.

One more factor is that in the last 10 years most of the projects were torn down with no real plan as to where the residents would go. Where once you had smaller pockets of poverty that stretched into the sky that were easier to police, now you have far more random acts of violence in once proud middle class neighborhoods which more often than not strikes the wrong target. You have a mixing of socio economic groups that is not going well. Many middle class individuals are fleeing rather than fighting and whole neighborhoods are being decimated.

A dollar circulates one time through a poor community before it finds its way to a more affluent area. A dollar there will go from one business to another to another over 8 times before it leaves that community enriching many of its residents along the way. In a poor community there are economic factors that lead to underground economies through the sale of drugs, cigarettes, sex and unfortunately guns.

Guns are one piece of the puzzle but in my opinion, economic prosperity and family stability is far more important.

first of all, this has been covered by national online news. not every girl getting killed in chicago will be covered on TV/radio news right away because it is common for people to die in big cities. i'm not saying it is the same thing as treyvon martin, but that story WAS NOT covered nationally the day it happened. It took a while to break.

want evidence...in 2012, 414 people were murdered in NYC. that's more than 1 person a day. I live here and i don't remember seeing news about 414 murders.

second of all...the entire gun debate is pointless. this country loves its guns. banning any type of gun will just drive up the secondary market for it and it will turn out like the war on drugs. the answer is a far more strict policy on gun manufacturing and sales tracking as well as licensing, plus a ridiculously high tax on ammo and restricting the amount of ammo you can buy per person per month. shit if i have to have my car inspected annually, you need to have your weapons accounted for annually.

Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" is based in Chicago's Back of the Yards section and dealt with the Social Darwinism of the early 1900s where the theory was it was best to let the strong survive and the weak die off.

When George Bush was reelected in 2004 he said he was the recipient of political capital and he intended to use it in his second term.
Michelle Obama attended Hadiya's funeral today. One by one her little young friends spoke about the need to end deadly gun violence. Maybe Michelle will go back to Washington tonight and tell her husband that it's a damn well time to start using his political capital.
we can only pray.

Its sad that a young girl was killed no doubt. Its even more sad that the first response is for people blame guns for this. The gun didnt kill her, a person did, period. Weed, meth, coke, heroin, these are all banned, now ask yourself, can you go and get these right now if you so desired? Banning guns will not make them go away, if they did, this young girl would not have been killed in Chicago.
Violent people will commit violent acts, until peoples urges to kill others is fixed, people will still be killed, unfortunately.

Instead of harping on about "guns" -- which are tools which can be used for good or evil. Why not talk about killers. Because that is what is responsible.

Killers don't in fact even need guns, and if you have ever been in the presence of a killer you will realize that. There are some cold hearted mother fuckers in this world, but we don't want to talk about that. A gun may be the only thing between you and someone who will take you out as soon as look at you.

The other fact is that these truly "once proud middle class neighborhoods" have been sacrificed. What good is it to work and struggle to stay out of the projects when your city dumps those very elements into your front lawn and cuts the police force at the same time?

Last question, How many arrests were made in connection with all those illegal guns they pulled off the street?
