View Full Version : Ooooh, Thumbs Down, I'm so hurt, how will I ever survive.

So, the thumbs down thing. I get it when you genuinely don't like a post, but to just find someone you don't like and do that out of spite, just silly. It's juvenile, and really indicates you probably need therapy to help get over some "issues" you've got.

No big secret as to who is doing it to me. This mysteriously started happening a short while back after a public disagreement.

For the record, I don't care. It's not like they're going to ban me if all my posts get thumbs down ratings. I actually feel a little bad that this is the extent of what they have in their life. That they are so angry and all they can do is petty revenge with a mouse click. It's sad.

I'd bet that every post in this topic receives a thumbs down.
Drawing attention to it gives the little trolls exactly what they want. Acknowledgment.

I don't think it's anybody picking on a certain person or sets of people specifically, rather just some ass hats who downvote every post they see.

I figured every post would get a thumbs down. (I just countered all of the above with up votes)

Mine I don't think is random, because his name shows up in my profile views every day since our last spat, like a stalker. I'm pretty sure mine is a targeted thing. Plus, who down-votes a picture of Jennifer Paris' breasts? Those things are like DaVinci masterpieces.

I'm getting a kick out of it though. I'm hoping my down-votes catch up to the number of posts I've made. I actually think that would be pretty funny.

Seanchai could probably confirm this, but people hang around my profile views section for weeks. It doesn't mean they're visiting my profile every day for weeks on end. It just means that other users haven't come along and bumped them off yet. In other words, I think that list is persistent for a few weeks before names disappear.

I wish there were some way to require a user post in a specific topic before being allowed to vote on any post in the same topic. Course, that may also mean lots of one-word posts from dolts wanting to thumb-up a titty pic. Pointless and excessive MySQL bloat costs money.

Seanchai and his peeps is working on it. That's the last I've heard. I don't know if he's modifying the voting system, finding a better replacement, or if he's just going to disable the system completely. I couldn't care less. I really didn't think the downvoting storm would bother people like this. I kinda assumed it'd happen. Hell, I don't even look at my ratio anymore.

It's cool. I freely admit to being a terrible speller

That's not how mine works though, have you ever taken one of those tests where there are like four or six squares, some are colored in, then there's another one and one box has changed, and then another, but its in a sequence and you have to predict the next one. I can do that with boxes that have up to 400 squares (as far as I've been tested so far) and as little as 20 different moves to create a pattern. I can't remember the questions to my SAT's, or LSAT or other standardized tests, but I can tell you the exact pattern of my answers on each one of them, even over 20 years later. I drove six miles today to the grocery store and back, the lights were red, red, red, green, red, green, green, green, red going there, and green, red, red ,red, red, green, green, red, red on the way home. I can also do that with the lights on most of my drives all the way back to my driving test for my temp license, 25 years ago.

Anything that appears random to most people but has some sort of pattern to it, it gets stuck in my head. Even statistical things, if it seems random, but isn't, I'm quick to pick up on. So a change in the number and frequency of the down-votes, while it doesn't bother me a bit, I'm quick to pick up on the frequency of them when they change. To me, the sudden upswing in downvotes might as well have been a giant flashing sign saying "Hey, look what I'm doing."

My only worry are new users who've started to contribute after the voting system was in place. I don't think it's conductive to new user retention. No matter the quality of their posts, their downvote ratio reflects that their contributions aren't popular or that they generally aren't welcome to post.

I'm new, so I do not understand at all. I see a post I like, I give it a thumbs-up. What happens to a member who gets a thumb up or thumb down? How do they even know? I went to JPH's profile page, but did not see the stats or ratio on like/not-like.

Is there a tangible consequence to having too many dislikes?

Glad you brought that up. There is no tangible consequence what-so-ever to being downvoted. The mods and admin don't consider the ratio when posters break forum rules, so there's no worry that a would-be warning would turn into a possible ban because of the voting system. It's just a way to make the forums a bit more interactive.

Voting stats can be referenced by accessing your user profile on HA.
If you click your username in the top-left corner of the screen you'll arrive at your profile page. Click the "Statistics" tab and your post vote ratio is displayed under "Helpful Postings".

If you're not already aware, there's been a lot of unnecessary downvoting going on, so don't expect your ratio to look good. Just keep in mind that it doesn't mean anything.

I am not sure what value there is to the thumbs-up, thumbs-down function. It seems to me that if you strongly disagree with a point of view expressed on here by someone then why not post a remark explaining your disagreement. And vice vera. Even if its just a post with one of those "I agree" little smiley things. And if it is simply that you don't like the looks of a girl posted or praised by someone why not simply keep those thoughts to yourself. We all have a differing taste in what we find attractive or a turn-on. Simply sticking it a guy who finds this or that girl cute is anonymous meanness.

JPH how do you do at BlackJack?

Not as good as you would think. I can remember the patterns of the cards dealt that I see and that have been dealt, but the memory doesn't work in a way that allows me to identify the remaining cards in the deck and figure the possibilities of them coming up. I'd need pencil and paper to track that. Bear in mind it is easier with one deck. Most casinos now use a minimum of 4, some have started using a minimum of 8 decks. You have to watch from the beginning of the set to the end, and I can recall every card I saw in the order in which it was revealed at the end. That's when the pattern ends. And I can pick up trends with the auto shufflers, when comparing these sets to others I've observed from start to finish. I can tell you as a general rule, you odds are about 45% greater to win if you are playing the start of the new mixed sets of cards, and start going down thereafter. But that's about it based on what I've seen. I don't spend a lot of time in casinos these days, and I'd have to watch a few times through the whole sets of 8 decks, jot down and compare patterns and then come back to the table later. So it might look a little suspicious.

Innocent, you really seem to think I care either about the downvotes or the person posting them. Two things to know about me, I'm not a mod, but I tend to call bullshit when people get out of line on here, point it out to others and smack them down for it, and second I can be a bit of an asshole about it. Lawyer and a comedian, being an asshole comes naturally. If I had ALL downvotes, I'd laugh about it. I think it's funny in a strange way. I think it would be hysterical to see 2 thumbs up posts for JPH, and 22,000,590 downvotes. I'd actually encourage that, just for the laughs.

Look, I'm all for debate, and I'm all for fairness. Cheap shots, and little anonymous F-you's to someone is just childish. Someone wants to take a shot at me, I've probably earned a few. And if they did, so be it. I still probably wouldn't care about them or what they said unless it slandered me in some way. If that's the case, I respond, and I've been told I respond brilliantly. I get fan mail over it. I responded when a person on here was calling more respected members "gay" and "fags" and I responded when I felt I was very unfairly being accused of being racist. To me, there is no place on here for that kind of thing. Yeah, this is essentially a porn site. But I also think of it as a place where people the public would look down on for something as simple as liking someone who is not the normal expected gender's sexual fantasy is looked down upon. So for someone to come in here and divide and humiliate others, and to do it annonymously, fuck them. I don't care about them at all.

There's a thread recently where someone who is a very very early transitioner was brave enough to post their own photos on here in hopes of being accepted. Unlike the whole BottomXOSlave incident, they weren't bragging about themselves, or calling others queer, fags, or gay. They were kind about it. And 20 little spineless pussies downvoted him. Fuck them. As far as I know, none of the ladies on here offered any advice to them either, and none of the guys were respectful about the photos. Only one person made a comment, and while it was negative, at least they had the balls to put their name on it. But like Prospero said, they should have just let it go.

The same things with the photos like Prosepero pointed out. How many guys on here actually tell their family and friends that they're into Transgendered ladies? Not fucking many. Hell, do yo know how many lurkers there are here? Those people can't even come out of hiding long enough to say "Yeah, Jennifer Paris has a great rack." They just sit back and criticize, doing the exact same thing in silence that is the reason they won't talk of this in public, being shunned. Fuck them. Those kinds of assholes aren't why I'm on this site, and I dont' care about them either.

Why did I post this thread? Not because I give a rats ass about my ratings, or about the person who did it. He's routinely racist, and posts things that people on here end up calling for him to be banned over. I don't care about him at all. Hell, I'm being kind and sparing him even more public embarrassment by not calling him out by name. Not that it's any big secret, it takes like two minutes to find the posts. If me being kind to him about this is caring about him, yeah, ok I'm guilty. I just want the pussy who hates me so much to put his name on the comment. Be a man and tell me you hate me for calling you out. I'd at least respect him for that. There can at least be a conversation about that. He could be a hell of a nice guy, who just has a habit of making stupid racist comments. That's an issue that can be addressed, discussed rationally, and solved. If not, block me and let go of the anger. But nothing changes until then, it's just angry baggage being carried around and being dispensed in petty childish little doses that does nothing to change anything. THAT is why I did this. He's embarrassed, he's angry, and he know's he's wrong, which is why he hasn't said anything publicly in response to me. All he has left is a petty little downvote to make him feel better about himself, and its sad. Pathetic even. But since I called him out in this, it's stopped. He doesn't even have that downvote anymore, and he's stopped stalking my profile. He's probably off somewhere being racist (as usual) and cursing me under his breath. I just want people on here to man up already and be adults, get rid of the hate, even the passive-agressive shit like downvoting and respect each other like adults. I realize I'm asking a lot of people on the internet. But I like to think it's possible.
