Because of hormones, most transsexuals in real life cannot get erections or have an orgasm. Great thread. Personally I have come to the view that the issues behind this debate are to do with societal conditioning. Particularly in the Anglo-Saxon world but elsewhere too, people are conditioned to think of everything in dualistic terms: on/off, right/wrong, left/right, male/female, gay/straight. This is a consequence of a particular monotheistic, judgemental religious background which, like it or not, informs our culture (and which many people even believe in to this day.)

The trouble is, nature is just not like that. Nature presents a world of limitless variation. There is no one 'standard' anything, particularly in a biological context.

This clashes directly with out societal conditioning. I forget who said it, but 'nature loves variety, society hates it'. We are the product of at least 7000 years of attempts to enforce social conformity through religion and other means.

Kinsey demonstrated, and his findings have never been successfully challenged in their substance, that sexuality is not a duality but a continuum. Harry Benjamin's pioneering attempts to understand mtf transsexualism, which again suggested a scale, a range of variation, have never been properly challenged, (though unfortunately Ray Blanchard's specious and unhelpful ideas have thoroughly muddied the water.) Nevertheless if we discount these then it is quite clear that transgender people fall onto a scale that goes from fully cisgendered to transsexual (Bnejamin's 'true transsexual.)

So what about attraction? We know from Kinsey that this is not a duality; so can this be related to attraction to transgendered people? I think it can, and the instant you do that, everything gets a lot easier. Men who find preop TS women are not gay in that they are expressing a desire for men or anything like it; they are expressing an attraction to a point along a scale of gender presentation that is somewhere in between fully male and fully female. This has been observed for a very long time but nobody ever seemed to want to study it, for societal reasons.

Are such men bisexual? Well, no, because that is a concept derived from a dualistic understanding of sexuality and gender expression; it suggests a combination of two different and discrete types (and this is probably why the limited research into bisexualism has been so inconclusive), whereas what is being observed is an attraction to an intergendered state.

That being the case, there are always going to be men who prefer their women to have penises; they can't change that about themselves. They are not 'gay' in the classic sense, but neither are they 'straight', simply because these categorisations are an inappropriate way of describing human sexuality.

Similarly there are plenty of examples of mtf transsexuals who prefer to keep their penises and who are not femboys, but women. Just where anyone sits on a scale is unique to that person and people should neither feel cajoled into surgeries to affirm their gender ID nor discouraged from it; it's all up to the individual. At the same time, TS people do have to accept that if they do have surgeries, there will be some men who are no longer attracted to them. That does not make these men 'gay' it just means their particular desire is for a point along the scale that is somewhere else.

Men do need to learn to be a lot more polite and considerate about their expression of these desires, however. Just because one is a tad disappointed that a favourite object of lust has lost her pecker is no bloody excuse whatsoever for flouncing around shrieking hysterically about what a mistake it was.
