April Ashley, just amazing. I've always loved the way she looked. I've got a thing for the early ladies though. Let me add some to the list....

The first 3 are all Bambi, next is Baby Mitchel, Hans Crystal, and three of Holli White.

You could...and probably should add Cochinelle to this list too, although I can't find the pictures I have of her at this moment. The very early entertainers also pioneered the way for many of today's ladies too.

Who are all these old people? Just kidding. Interesting to see... I had no idea there was life before Olivia Love (who I'm not calling old... she was just the first TS that I ever saw on film).

Wendy Carlos did an incredible version of Peter & The Wolf with Weird Al Yankovic of all people. I must have gone through three cassettes of that back in the 80's.

I'm not sure if transexuals i what you'd call the boys in frocks posted by Martin. Interesting porn though. I wonder if there were shemales on the walls of the brothels of Pompeii?

Now I am convinced, thanks.

Caroline Cossey is seriously one of the hottest ladies ever!!! Plus, she got my teenage ass to read her book, that was certainly ground-breaking.... she also got teenage me to get a fake ID so I could buy her issue of Playboy. So there's that too.

The word Hermaphrodite comes from an ancient Greek legend where Hermes & Aphrodite's son was one.

In Ancient Greece 1 in 50 to 100 people were rumored to be in some way hermaphroditic. Many people have pseudohermaphroditism where the sex organs are of one sex but some external characteristics are of the other sex. So extremly feminine men or masculine women. Men who developed breasts, women who grew facial hair etc etc.

Modern medicine corrects many birth defects straight away so you see much less people with webbed feet or 6 fingers etc but birth irregularities are actually pretty common. One that is often fixed is male genitalia as well as female genatalia on babies. In general we probably aren't as aware of the likelyhood of some level of irregularity in our offspring as people were in the past.

So the legend of Hermaphroditicus was probably just the Greek way of being inclusive of those individuals in the whole of Greek Society.

A whole series of Egyptian Pharoah's were portrayed with both male and female characteristics and it should be noted that the line died out shortly after as they did not produce offspring. It's possible given the whole marrying their sister thing led to recessive genetic hermaphroditism manifested in their line and they simply became sterile hermaphrodites.

It's not unusual in artwork, and statues from the ancient world to see a mix of sexual characteristics in the same individual. Smaller populations and more inbreeding was likely to have increased the likelyhood of these birth irregularities and the same situations occured in Ancient Rome - Caligula going mad, Claudius's various defects etc were largely down to the 12 families of Roman aristocracy inbreeding for generations.

So yeah in all likelyhood ancient Romans and Greeks would have both portrayed these individuals in art including art in Brothels but may well have also had them working in them too.

Very cool to see the history. As usual there is nothing new under the sun,but what has change and changing everyday is the thoughts and ideas of what gender & sexuality is.

Here's a few I found. All cabaret "female impersonnators". In order, Coccinelle, Capucine, Holy White, Toby Marsh and Terry Noel. All lovely. Some of them transitioned, some didn't, but hey! they all looked so beautiful it's almost beyond belief...

Hey Dan, who is the "Jean" in the photo that follows Holly White? I've never seen her before. Hopefully there are more pics of her out there. I've been on a classic kick lately.

I think in fact, even if the pic is entitled “Jean”, it’s the same person as in the next one, it’s Toby Marsh. Incredible pair of legs! Can you believe how beautiful they were? We’re talking the 50s and 60s. They were all amongst the first to take hormones regularly for those who did…

The only name I've seen for the first two pictures is "Robin Roberts", and I saw that in an old issue of Female Mimics International published by Kim Christy. But I sure would like the know the names of the last two ladies and are they still with us?
