We elect our presidents via the Electoral College here in the USA and right now the map for Governor Romney looks very ugly (he's got very little chance).
I am predicting with good authority that he will select the young latino senator from Florida in a desperate attempt to carry swing states where he is trailing badly.
Once again.... You've heard it first on HA. When its announced officially you'll think. hmm. I heard that already

I can't comment much as I don't really know the people -the link to a list and assessment of candidates may make more sense to Americans, I haven't heard of any of the dark horses; but Rubio gets a high rating compared to others on the favourites.

Flab, I'm not as confident as you that Romney has little chance. I do agree that he'll pick Rubio... I've thought that for some time. Only time will tell if he's the best choice. I do feel that Romney is going through a rough patch right now, and it was entirely predicted by Gingrich and Santorum. They urged Romney to release multiple years of tax returns and he refused. They said it would haunt him in the general and now it's proving to be a bit of a sticky wicket.

I understand from the DailyTelegraph that the Drudge Report has tipped Condoleeza Rice as Romney's VP -does this make him more, or less electable?

I think a VP choice rarely ever makes a presidential nominee more or less electable. I believe it only reinforces a decision a voter was going to make anyway.
That being said,if the report is true, she'd be an excellent choice...she adds foreign policy credentials to the ticket, that are at this point, somewhat lacking. She also gives name recognition to the ticket - something that appeals to the paparazzi and the large number of voters in this country who really can't identify with short term senators or small state governors that are rarely ever front page news in this country (hard to do when you get your news from TMZ).
I think her and Mitt would form an attractive ticket...except to those Republicans who prefer their candidates to be pure social conservatives.

She's always been an attractive choice for further political office, but under normal circumstances, I don't think she'd deign to take a VP spot...unless she realizes that slowly her "name recognition" is dwindling and now is the time to bring it back to the forefront.

more elctable imo. Condi is a universally respected public figure here.
one problem. she will make it clear to Romney's people that she's not interested. A grueling 3 month campaign against a person she admires is not on her to do list. And what's her prize if she's on the winning ticket? Running the State Department is a far more meaningful position than VP. She already did that, and splendidly well.
btw. She's stated publicly that her only aspiration is to be the first woman commissioner of the National Football League or president of Stanford University, her alma mata

Condi's pro-choice.

This is key. Mitt used to be pro-choice, too. The religious nutjobs are already leery of him. He has no room to pick a pro-choice VP.

But the main problem is that she's black. If you think the racists are no longer a key constituency for the GOP, then you've been living on another planet. There's zero chance, in 2012, that the GOP is going to elect a black person to national office.

And Condi knows this pretty well:

“There is no way I would do this.... I don’t see myself in any way in elected office. I love policy. I’m not particularly fond of politics.”

It's going to be Rob Portman.

with about a week away from Mitt's announcement I am changing my prediction to Ryan. just too much momentum for this guy.
It will be Romney-Ryan in November.

I've been predicting Rubio since Romney first stepped into the race. He and Jindal could be the flagbearers of the new GOP if the OLD GOP would get their heads out of each other's asses.

And I can't stand the GOP. New, old, or otherwise. Had McCain not shot himself in the foot with YoGrizzlyMama, I might have voted for him. You vote for the candidate, not the party. I try not to run with the sheeple.

HEY! You can't do that!!! ha ha
Who cares? You never hear any Republicans talking up their ticket, they just slam Obama.

Not knowing who Ryan is, I googled the name and got this article by someone else I don't know, Bruce Bartlett, arguing against Ryan and in favour of a 'boring white guy' called Portman...

There are so many mysteries to outsiders looking in. That anyone can begin reading Atlas Shrugged and finish it being one of them.

Its a foregone conclusion that Obama will be re-elected. But I'd like to see Mitt show some soul in defeat.
Ryan has proposed a budget that would stimulate a debate about how we move forward. He tackles Medicare, the trillion dollar health care safety net for us old folks. He's got a free market approach that puts the onus on the consumer. The tea party has their shining spokesperson in Ryan as VP

Ryan's got balls.
Put up or shut up. We'll see if Romney's got any

I wish I could share Flabby's optimism. As an outsider i am watching in horrified facination.

And as to Paul Ryan. I suspect in a Romney residency he would be to Romney what Cheny was to Bush.

Here is his profile from a recent New Yorker. It does not make happy reading for those of a Liberal persuasion.

The semi-literate white trash guy from Arkansas making $40K a year with 4 kids who's daily diet is Taco Bell and have yet to have had a dental checkup during their lifetimes will wake up soon. He'll see the TV commercials that explain how Ryan's bill wants to cut Medicaid aid to states by $750 billion over the next 8 years and how the Ryan Budget will reduce the capital gains tax to zero. That's right zero. After all, job creators take risks to start businesses and shouldn't be taxed.
And collectively as a nation the soap opera bag of economic bullshit that Romney's been puking up will finally show itself as nothing more than protecting wealthy people's money. Believe me, Romney-Ryans' going down worse than Goldwater in 64.
