View Full Version : Why do porn companies still make DVDs?

Why do porn companies continue to make DVDs? The only thing I have heard that adult DVD sales are declining for a number of reasons such as tube sites and membership sites. It is cheaper for people to buy a site membership than to buy a DVD.

Plus it would be good for our environment to be less wasteful.

Because it still makes money.

DVDS seem to sell decent here in the UK still, sex shops are usually sold out of trans / milf and amateur style stuff and say "they cant get it in fast enough". make what you will of this..

I still find in my travels and as a Producer there is still a market for those who prefer as Michelle said to have the DVD in hand. I still purchase DVD's from stores of titles I see online that I really like. Sometimes rather pop a DVD in on the big screen and enjoy it rather than my laptop.

The porn industry needs to start shooting in higher quality and distributing in blue ray in my opinion. Blue ray quality on an HD tv/monitor is what gets me to actually pay for actual hard copies of movies. And I like having a little collection.

I guess some people are old fashioned or like to stick with what is familiar, plus in order to get good picture fidelity you need a good network connection and decent computer, while a DVD player is quite cheap and has excellent fidelity. Still, I think porn is moving more and more to the web. You get a better choice of viewing options and can easily move between content type.

A comment about blue ray: It never took off. My own blue ray system is slow to load and I see no improvement in picture quality, despite the big digital screen. I call it Slow Ray b/c it loads so slowly.

Its a great time to buy dvds, they are so cheap, well some of them. Sometimes they are just overly pricey for a new one. Depends the person, do you need to see the latest scene, then maybe websites are a good option. I don't care for the latest, I demand quality porn that I can jerk to for years. It depends the nature of the person. I am furgal porn buyer, so I buy with a price limit in mind.

Remember when your computer is down, having dvds are great. If you lose power and forget to charge your laptop, magazines are amazing. Its all about what you need. Plus buying great porn for a low price is the best.

[Sammi, I see how you game, that goodness there is no video conferencing or I would never focus.]

If you're an independent producer (less than 100 units) you MAY be able to skate under the radar but otherwise the license to use the actual Blu-Ray logo / term in ANY marketing is stupidly expensive. Eventually, it will probably become a generic term like 'DVD' but until then, it probably just isn't worth the expense except for the largest producers.

I investigated this burning a few Blu-Ray discs that I was going to sell and actually was able to speak with a licensing agent from Blu-Ray who said they honestly probably wouldn't go after someone only producing a few discs to sell but anyone actually marketing without a license is subject to a fairly hefty fee.

I agree though... I would like to see TS porn release a Blu-Ray disc or two.

I find this to be odd. Most TS content can be brought online at a cheaper price. There are only a few TS DVDs that you cannot join the producers' sites to buy the scenes such as Morgan Bailey's Bad Day. I want to see a few scenes from this DVD. Oh well

UPDATE on Blu-Ray:

So I checked this out again and put in a call to the rep I spoke with before.

It actually looks like the license price has dropped significantly... but still probably too expensive for any independent seller. $500.00 per year ($2,500 upfront) and that is just the license. You still have to meet BD requirements to actually use the logo which is a headache. If you're planning on just burning onto a BD-R (which was what I was planning to do) the following applies... pretty straightforward:

"If you are planning to burn your material onto a BD-R or BD-RE disc only, then you do not qualify for any BD Licenses.
Therefore, you are not permitted to use the BD Logo on anything anywhere that is related to those products, except for the BD Logo that is already marked on the disc by the licensed manufacture company."

That essentially makes it useless and impossible to market a Blu-Ray disc without opening yourself up to lawsuit.

The question I have... are more producers limiting it to just streaming videos or downloadable versions? I think by having it as streaming, it limits who can download, pirate, and redistribute the videos.

I have gotten subscriptions to sites before but I often only get them for 1-2 months before I switch company or actress. I watch about 2-3 videos per day average and I like only select types of scenes. That's where DVD's of a certain type have an advantage. But after 2-3 viewings of each scene, I'm in need of something new. I just finished up watch Domino Presley's works on her site and am wondering what I am going to watch for July/August. Hahah. I think I might go scour over: http://annamiller.com/ Sexy swinging group sex!

(Off topic. I am now dating a virgin so my libido is trying to adjust to a girl who I might not have sex with for quite some time. I might have to quite looking at porn. :( )

Some girls I just like to have their work on DVD. I must admit I have very little porn on DVD (about 10 dvds) and non of it is opened but the girls in them are my favorite performers. I opt for online when im watching porn but will still get their stuff that I enjoy. For nostalgia I would miss the DVD's if they stopped making them but not enough that it would change how I viewed porn

TSMichelleAustin
07-04-2012, 05:57 AM
DVDs are also nice for girls to sign for their fans at conventions, etc. Im releasing my second dvd, I have them on sale through my site or you can watch them on VOD sites. But I have fans who love having a signed copy. Plus its easy to sell DVDs when your selling them at a booth at a convention. Fans, then buy and have you sign them! But for indie girls and sites that produce their own stuff like Wendy, she has been pushing her own DVD line for years! But she also works hard getting them into stores too! You would be surprised to see that in Middle America people still go to porn stores and buy dvds!

GroobySteven

Under $1 - $1.50 a piece depending on quantity.

Distributors take about 30% of sale and they wholesale to retailers for between $3 and $18 a piece.

Ok - come up with the other numbers in terms of costs (or what you think you could make a release on) and I'll break it down for you why most people aren't shooting excl. porn on DVD.

Going back to the autographed DVDs (which I have plenty of)...the ones with the autograph on the plastic wrapping instead of the case itself are untouched. I consider them collector's items. My Up Close and Virtual with Khloe Hart and Danielle Foxxx DVDs fall into that category, as do the aforementioned Celeste (and Amy Daly's Translesbian I) movies.

I also have Bailey Jay is Line Trap...wrapped. I've seen the scenes though.

That's what most people said a decade ago about VHS when DVDs were new to the market. A decade from now people will be complaining that bluray is shit compared to holoROM or whatever the industry uses by then. It seems to be that audiophiles and videophiles either have to constantly upgrade their collections in preference of new and better media formats or give up entirely and claim that their outdated preferences for specific formats are superior when they just aren't.

DVD would still suffice if the television industry hadn't been able to talk all of us schmucks into buying HDTVs. Now that we have, all of our DVD collections and old video games look like complete shit upscaled to 1080p. That's why I still have an old piece of crap CRT television capable of glorious 720x486 resolution. Have you ever tried playing an NES on an HDTV? Blasphemy. It's just blasphemy.

its nice to own as well, music I rather get off itunes I think thats cos I barely ever got into CD's by the time I had first PC, mp3s was all the rage for g33ks. However when it comes to films or tv series, owning the physical boxset or dvds is still my choice, its nice to see something physical for your wonga......

....... which is why talking to distributors is a pain. Am sure there is still DVDS to be sold, i get sick of clients asking me for one .. when I don not have one. If only they would deal with smaller fish and make getting the physical content out there a bit easier and dare I say, they be less greedy , does it all boil down to that?? Especially when you have already covered production costs, does my head in.

Rant Over.

I knew 3D would catch on, but the first batch of movies released seemed to rely on the technology to support hokey and cliche effects. I think production studios were toying with the technology and trying to get a better understanding of it by releasing a slew of movies they knew wouldn't be successful.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those weirdos with a mullet and a Tom Selleck mustache who carries around a walkman in a fanny pack and has a cell phone that weighs more than their forearm. Rapist glasses. I like new technology, but not forced frivolous updates. What the industry did with HDTV wasn't about losing money to supporting two formats. It was about motivating people to spend money on something that was more-or-less unnecessary. I bought an HDTV too, but I kept my old CRT because I knew none of my old video game consoles would look right. Most people don't consider stuff like that and end up trading out old technology for new then complaining about format support.

And Grimm you are correct. Movie studios and companies are rehashing crap and selling stuff that's watered down because people always hop on the new shit. I miss the old 3d type stuff, this new stuff sux. Basically they're trying to double sales by doing nothing but having multiple format releases. It's all basically new toys that get old after a few minutes. You understand the way this works...

And as far as cd's and dvds it's one of the last ways they can show sales on the books....

What i liked the most about DVDs was the "inside the porn shop" part.

5-7k?

Fair guess, probably what I would have expected also. They NOW sell in their low 1000's. Small companies like ours might shift 1000 in their first 18 months, Evil Angel probably around 2500-3500 in that time. I was amazed how few actually sell. Considering the amount you actually get from each copy, it takes a lot of sales to break even.

So maybe $10/piece - 30% = about $7 - $1.25 = $5.75/unit sold before any production costs are figured in. Is that about right?

I like DVDs better because I can relax, lie in my bed and jack off watching the video. Easier to fast forward too or jump to a scene on my DVD player.

Watching on computer, I'm sitting etc. Not my favorite way of jacking off. I guess I could route it or wi fi the video but I'm too lazy to set all that up.

20/20 Video used to have a backroom where they sold DVDs for $10 which was a great price. I was also able to find TS vids too once they were 3 to 4 months old. Lots of Third World Media and Robert Hill but other companies too including Red Light and Anaboic TS DVDs. But never Evil Angel. I started to see straight Evil angel porn but never TS porn cheap from them. They also charged $15 for the EVil Angel stuff.

I bought a lot of porn DVDs and have 3 binders full of TS porn (dumped the boxes as they took up too much space)

I really got used to that $10 price point.

Online I usually buy only $15 to $20 several months after release and I've been buying a lot less.

the last few DVDs I bought were Shemale XXX, Domino, Amy Daly Translesbian. Mostly Third World Media as their price point is under $20. Grooby (is that you seanchai?) is part of this company and that's great.

I loved Shemale XXX and I'm in love with Amy Daly. Would love to see a a full video too with Kimberly Kills. Her scene with Amy was extremely hot.

the last few DVDs I bought were Shemale XXX, Domino, Amy Daly Translesbian.

Third World is our DVD distributor - they're a good company.
We will be doing a big DVD sale starting next week with some quality titles starting as low as a couple of bucks at http://www.shemale-video-direct.com - this is our main outlet for our releases.

So maybe $10/piece - 30% = about $7 - $1.25 = $5.75/unit sold before any production costs are figured in. Is that about right?

$10 would be optomistic per piece. At the higher end we can probably get $12 for ours but most would be around the $7-$9 mark for larger amounts.

Generally would make $3-5 a copy. This is why selling them directly ourselves is so important as at http://www.shemale-video-direct.com we take 100% of the sale with no distributors or middlemen and this enables us to keep it more profitable.

Interesting. It's crazy to think that DVDs that eventually cost $20-40 only bring in $5 to the producer of the content. Thanks for taking the time to explain it all.

Ok, I've added your link to my favorites and will check out your sale. I usually buy from Adult DVD Empire.

Do you have an actual physical storefront in LA and will allow people to come buy direct? Just asking, but mailorder is fine too if not.

DVD's also give a certain credibility to the content that they feature (although this may not always prove to be true) Having a DVD hard copy on the shelves of adult book stores or featured in an online store just gives a better impression than online only membership driven content or sold just as clips. But its still about money, porn is a profit orientated business not volunteer work to ensure everyone can have access to their favorite smut.

No we're just a mail order. We're actually going to be focussing just on Grooby stuff and a few select titles in the future so liquidating most of our stock - so some bargains to be had - watch this space. Thanks.

Do you think you could start a thread announcing the sale so we'll know?
