According to this guy, we are 176th in infant mortality. I don't where he got that number. If you go by the UN Population Division, we rank 34th. The CIA World Factbook has the rank as 49th.

Yeah, completely polarized declarations like that have always gotten awesome results every time, forever. Look, It's shit everywhere, even the nice places so unless you're in an utterly hopeless third world country you might as well stay put and apply a little elbow grease into wiping some of the shit off your own little patch of land.

I saw that "speech" scripted by Aaron Sorkin and the trouble is it offers a ludicrous presentation of a mythical and idealized past as well as a pretty accurate image of the present. Rousing as it was. The whole series will have the liberals loving it - and the Conservatives grinding their teeth. But its just too unbalanced.

Best and worst countries is a meaningless concept. Most beautful? Best yuman rights record/ Best standard of living? etc etc etc.....

Kinda wish I had HBO, saw the speech in a preview and instantly thought it'd be at the least an interesting show. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for awhile afterwards, it's nice to finally see a proper answer to such an ignorant and self-absorbed question.

We are NOT the best country in the world. In some areas we might have it better than others, but we are not the best overall. And I'm not being anti-patriotic; I'm just keeping it real.

Meaningless? Perhaps in those terms (best and worst) but that's no less subjective than "most beautiful" You sound like the kinda guy who gives everybody a trophy for mere participation. Best Human rights record...who judges that...the UN? Didn't they put Iran and Libya on the Human Rights Commission?

I'd use the word exceptional....flawed at times, but exceptional. Some nations like the US are exceptional, some aren't. I don't think there's any question about it. That's not nationalistic, that's a historical fact.

what IS the international average for intelligence, ability, and skill these days anyway? i'd say there were most definately times in history when we were more than exceptional, but consistently over the years? especially the last decade? or the one to come for that matter... I'm not so sure about all that.

given that "exceptional" doesn't mean good or bad, merely unusual then yes the USA is exceptional.

Kelly's reference to the US being behind much of the world in terms of education stands. I REALLY wish that weren't the case but it is. The same phenomenon is occurring in my country of Australia.

There seems to be a strange relationship between wealth and educational priorities... In any developing nation there is no more illustrious calling than science and engineering, but in the rich west these are considered second choices.

However, the hegemony of the west is fundamentally based upon being technologically ahead of the rest of the world. So I think we really do have difficult times ahead when other nations shoot past our complacent selves in terms of knowledge and tech.

For what it's worth -- having investigated it -- there is some evidence that one of the Norwegian countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway) could be the best. Whenever you look up charts on health, well-being, happiness, education, low crime, lack of people in prison, lack of state corruption, etc., they're always in the top #1-3.

Sweden model of regulating prostitution is not ideal, though (hands off the escorts but prosecute the johns).

Prospero

all issues of best and worst etc are trade-offs.
I'd agree (!!!!!!!!!) with OMK that the US is exceptional. For sure. no argument from me on that. And I mean that in sincereity. I do love the US (though not what people of OMKs politics would make of it).
But exceptional is a loaded word too. China is also an exceptional country . And the UK. And France and Germany. Come up with another word..

And OMK I actually think ou didn't understand my post. I was also saying that best human rights, most beautiful etc are also subjective.

Limit it a bit and it becomes more meaningful. Most evil government in the past century? Worth an argument. Probably Hitler's germany or maybe pol Pot's Cambodia or on a longer term basis Stalin's Russia etc. Most mountainous? Nepal? Tibet? Switzerland? etc... get me now? I was NOT making a political point.

For a developed country, we have by far the most religitards per capita.

Our president is (politically ) forced to go to fucking prayer breakfasts.

It is possible to draw up a set of indicators on things such as literacy and health and human rights and then measure countries against it and rank them accordingly, and it is this fetish for rank, league tables and so on that is the problem -is anyone surprised when on an index of human rights Afghanistan and Somalia hit the bottom? But it is also the case that the literacy rate in the USSR under Stalin was better than the USA, but did this make it a better place to live in? It is clearly possible to draw up a list of countries that have elected politicians and those that don't, but then there are fixed elections, elections with low turn-outs, and so on which means there are always cultural and qualitative issues that lists don't record.

What about the people who emigrate from the UK to live in Spain who do it for the weather, is that on an index?

nothing wrong with believeing in angels per se, but doing so and then being intolerant towards others, fuuuuuuuck that!

i'll tolerate someone who believes a magical Santa from cloud town and his hippy son rule the universe atop polka dotted unicorns all day long, but the second they start ragging on someone else for believing biological organisms evolve over time or that a preteen girl raped by her father should be given a morning after pill, they're just batshit crazy loons who have no more right to be running around free than any other mental patient in my opinion.

So Kelly, where would you rather live?

Take a look around, you're actually pretty fortunate to live in the States.

(btw I hear Cuba has an excellent medical set-up - does that make it a desirable place to live? You see the point I'm making about citing decontextualised stats, I'm sure.)

I'm pretty sure the USA is considered the greatest country on the face of the earth because we can blow any other country off the face of the world. Smarter than US? BOOM we can blow your smart ass up. Just sayin.......
