On the other hand, Liberation Theology developed in Brazil, and the Catholic Church was considered 'liberal' or 'left-wing' politically in Brazil and Colombia where it was conservative and pro-military in Argentina and Chile -notably in the 1960s and 1970s. If you want a corrective to the negative associations of the Christian church, you could read Mark Roseman's The Past in Hiding, one of the finest historical studies of the Third Reich I have read, and a gripping story about a Jewish woman (who emigrated to Liverpool) who spent the war living in safe houses run by a Protestant underground group in he Ruhr.

By coincidence there was a talk on Spinoza yesterday on Radio 4 in which his ex-communication was explained and described -his crime was to suggest that if God is everywhere, and we can therefore see God in the wonders of nature, what purpose is served by religious texts? Spinoza did not so much attack religious authority -synagogue, church- as suggest it was a needless interference -that they should be considered, as it were surplus to requirements; but this threatened the very existence of religious authority, so they threw him out. So we are left with the problem that there are religious people who do good things without asking for any reward (cf Ignatius Loyola's prayer], and others who use their 'authority' to impose their views on other people as if it were sanctioned by their religion, and it is not.

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (AP) — Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar staunchly denied Sunday that he punched and choked his 15-year-old daughter in an argument, telling his congregation the allegations made in a police report are nothing but "exaggeration and sensationalism."
"I will say this emphatically: I should have never been arrested," Dollar said in his first public appearance two days after police charged him with misdemeanor counts of simple battery and cruelty to children.
The pastor got an enthusiastic ovation as he took the pulpit Sunday at the World Changers Church International in metro Atlanta. He addressed the criminal charges head-on for several minutes before moving on to his sermon.
"I want you all to hear personally from me that all is well in the Dollar household," Dollar said.
Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta, with 30,000 members in the Atlanta area and a ministry of satellite churches across the U.S.
He was arrested after his 15-year-old daughter called 911 at about 1 a.m. Friday and told a Fayette County sheriff's deputy that she and her father argued when he said she couldn't go to a party. A police report says the girl told a deputy her father charged at her, put his hands around her throat, began to punch her and started hitting her with his shoe. The deputy noted a scratch on her neck.
The report said the deputy also interviewed Dollar's 19-year-old daughter, who said her father grabbed her sister's shoulders and slapped her in the face and choked her for about five seconds. She said her sister tried to break free, but did not fight back. When her father threw the 15-year-old on the floor, the older girl ran to get her mother. Dollar's wife, Taffi, told the deputy she did not see the fight.
Dollar launched into a lengthy denial of the allegations from the pulpit Sunday.
"The truth is that a family conversation with our youngest daughter got emotional," he said. "And emotions got involved and things escalated from there."
He said the mark on his daughter's neck had been there for about 10 years and was caused by a skin condition, eczema.
"The truth is she was not choked, she was not punched. There were not any scratches on her neck," Dollar said. "But the only thing on her neck was a prior skin abrasion from eczema. Anything else is exaggeration and sensationalism."
Dollar's congregation appeared supportive Sunday, giving him sustained applause as he took the stage.
"I don't know the full specifics, but I've been going here seven years and I trust my pastor," said Robert Hooper, a 27-year-old retail manager, as he arrived at church. "I know his kids. I know he loves his family. Everybody makes mistakes."

The teachings of the historical Jesus as recorded in the Gospels were surely about love and forgiveness for one's enemies, turning the other cheek and essentially about peace. The words spilling from this so called "Christian" are the very antithesis of that. Makes me suspect that if there were actually such a thing as the devil then he has taken possession of Christian churches across the US. Many offer pure evil instead of wisdom. It's a racket. I don't mean that as a slight to Christianity any more than I do when I say the same about Rabbis and Imams who take the same stance. At some point they justify their existence by interpreting modern events and trying to apply religious doctrine to them. AIDS is a divine punishment, the World Trade Center attacks were a punishment, wearing condoms is a sin. Anyone who says otherwise is chipping away at their monopoly in stoking fear among the public.

Yet they always seem to apologize when they take their prophesies so far that even the pious are offended. These religiousmen pretend to have near superpowers when they interpret the old testament or the bible and act as though they can tell everyone how to live. Yet when they get exposed as ridiculous they always end up grovelling like little children asking the public (and not their lord) for forgiveness.
