Interesting set of photos and stories about transgender from Pakistan. It always open your eyes when you see something from a different prespective. (Not a bunch of porn photos, sorry to disappoint).

Wonder what is the story behind this picture, is it a marriage?

Would had been interesting to have a few comment about each picture and the story behind it.

Some time ago I posted a link to a feature film in which Pakistan's Hijra play a role but I can't recall it now. This lik may also be of interest:

Yes it is a marriage. From wiki: Hijras perform religious ceremonies at weddings and at the birth of male babies, involving music, singing, and sexually suggestive dancing. These are intended to bring good luck and fertility. Although hijras are most often uninvited, the host usually pays the hijras a fee. Many fear the hijras' curse if they are not appeased, bringing bad luck or infertility, but for the fee they receive, they can bless goodwill and fortune on to the newly born. Hijras are said to be able to do this because, since they do not engage in sexual activities, they accumulate their sexual energy which they can use to either bestow a boon or a bane.

Same here, they are not fond of gay and transgender people. There are many Muslims here also! It can be scary and go home after a night on the town for the lightly dressed girls. Men with beards screaming abuse, and they can be rapists, I have heard. :geek:

I would hope that you would not associate such psychotic behavior with the teachings of the Koran/Islam. The Koran clearly states that women should be honored and protected. I admit that I am not a full Islamic scholar, but I know something about the teachings/practice. One transgender in Pakistan had a nationally televised program and interview actors, politician, and even religious leaders (Begum Nawazish Ali).

While were on the subject of trans from other nations; here's one from Angola, and musical artist who calls herself "Titica"

I was not associating anything with the teachings of Koran or targeting islam itself. i was jus referring to those cowardly pakistani men who indeed throw acid at a woman's face for no good reason. the worst part is the person who does it is either the victims family member (brother, cousin) or fiancee or just a guy the poor girl refused to marry. Fuck those kind of cowards who would do such a hideous thing and ruin a woman's life.

And according to today's Guardian, Hijra in Pakistan have a new career as tex collectors; while this might be a better trade than what they usually do, the fact that they are being used to shame people into paying their taxes does rather put the Hijra in a negative category morally. But I its a job; and its not a blow-job either.

it's important to seperate religion and culture. e.g. Muslim marrying a christian might be strictly forbidden in say Pakistan but in many African countries (that are islamic countries), it is ok for inter-religion marriage

similarly Hijras are a pan-Indian thing and are actually quite respected (in a funny way) in Pakistani culture - and some are quite glamorous and b'ful. Whereas in India they are definitely looked down up with disgust and they actually usually look quite bad as well.

I thought that in the Koran, marriage is permitted between Muslim men, and Christian and Jewish women. Here is one article that discusses this:

Yoda two links to confirm the legal basis provided by the Qur'an; the second one of which is a story in which the complaint is an unfounded belief a Muslim woman who married a Christian converted to Christianity, becoming an apostate:
