View Full Version : Domino’s Pizza Founder to Start Ultra-Conservative Town

I've never been a big Domino's fan anyway. Their pizzas are too small and their delivery is too slow.

MIAMI - Tom Monaghan, founder of the Domino’s Pizza chain, and a former marine who was raised by nuns, has embarked on a multi-million dollar plan to build the first town in America to be run according to strict Catholic principles.

The recent story in The Sunday Times of London reported that abortions, pornography and contraceptives will be banned in the new, ultra-conservative Florida town of Ave Maria, which has begun to take shape on former vegetable farms 90 miles northwest of Miami.

The announcement has understandably stirred protests from civil rights activists by declaring that Ave Maria’s pharmacies will not be allowed to sell condoms or birth control pills and the town’s cable television network will carry no X-rated channels.

Well, now Florida has the distinction of having both the "happiest place on earth" (Disneyland) and the "most boring place on earth."

Doesn't Rush "the junkie" Limbaugh reside in Florida? Maybe he can get a discount on his oxycontin at these reich-wing pharmacies. Gov. Jeb Bush's daughter will probably frequent them as well...

hey, if they wanna do it, why not?
At least they're keeping to themselves.
Because, as Catholics they aren't evangelical, so they wont be trying to "recruit" people any time soon.

The thought had occurred to me...I suppose that it would depend on how they feel about bestiality and incest. If not, he can always settle for pedophilia, the Catholic church has no problem with that.

Nooo! It won't! All the girls will wear plaid skirts and the local priest will give them stale bread sticks from all over the country to satisfy their sexual urges!!! And then... and then ....the young boys will be pissed...but the priests will take them aside and say "Son, have you ever put your hand in a hotpocket with out getting burned..come here."

Then they'll promise to show them where they get the cheese for their double cheese pizza in under 30 minutes.

Trogdor
02-08-2007, 08:09 AM
naw, the priests, and probably that pizza guy himself will tell the boys to close their eyes and suck on a hose for a surprise.

That or like in that scene from GWAR's "Phallus in Wonderland" where Father Bohab, upon whipping out his schlongm said to an alter boy, "Would you like to try my lucky charm? It's magically delishous!" :P

Idiot.

On the surface, this whole thing is not dissimilar to the Amish or the Mormons forming separate communities based on their religious principles. The US has a long history of utopian experiments, from all parts of the spectrum. However, historically, most of them fail and I suspect this one will, too, mostly because it has no charismatic visionary leader, i.e., Monaghan did not (as far as I can tell) have a religious vision as a source for setting up the town, just hardened political views, and he is definitely not a charismatic type. With most utopian movements, once the founding leader dies (or is ousted), everything falls apart in petty political bickering among the successors.

On the other hand, one could also see the hypocrisy of the conspiracy theory held by many on the extreme right that Muslims in the US are trying to establish "Shariah law" in some cities (including Dearborn, Michigan, which happens to be in Monaghan's home territory! I know because I am also originally from that area.). I have no idea if Monaghan and his supporters hold this view, but it is interesting to consider--the denial and projection.

Personally, I am happy to see right wingers and religious fanatics remove themselves from the rest of society so they have less influence and can cause less damage. I'd prefer to see Monaghan and his followers go set up the town in the middle of the rainforest somewhere, but I think he's likely to fail regardless. I feel sorry for children raised in that environment, just like in Texas where the state board of education is adopting religious-based revisionist history as the standard for all their textbooks.

The Domino's delivery guy made me say grace before he handed over my pizza!!! He said starting from next week he's only delivering loaves and fishes...Tom Monaghan sold Dominos in 1998. It spent some time in a LBO firm. That company still owns 30% of Dominos; the rest is traded on the NYSE.

I just got done eating a medium pizza from Domino's. I paid full menu price because the coupon printing company doesn't recycle (FWIW).

But I do agree. Religion and government should stay separate.

But if thats so, why do the environmentalists in the government have power? I shouldn't have to pay to support their beliefs.

I thought that liberals believed in weapons control?

Besides, are those bombs "carbon neutral"? :))

Are they made with sustainable energy?

After they are used do you brave the nuclear fallout to recycle whatever material may be left?

If you were aware of the amount of environmental legislation that's been tabled in Congress, you wouldn't make that statement.

Environmental issues should by definition be non-partisan. Progressives, conservatives and everyone in between benefit from clean air, water and habitable protected forests.

The only folks against sound environmental legislation are corporations who are opposed to ANYTHING that cuts into their profit share.

Corporations are without conscious and amoral. That's the real problem, the profit motive is antithetical to a representative democratic political system, and the real trick is finding a way for both free market capitalism and effective governance to co-exist.

Environmentalism and profitability are not exclusive to each other. This is a fight waged by day traders and environmentalists. Environmentalists want to wage war on working people (plain and simple). They want to put business out of business in the name of the environment.

You're confusing environmental extremists (ELF, etc) and groups like the Sierra Club.
Cap and trade is a separate issue altogether.

EVERYONE is, or should be, concerned about the environment. ANd I see nothing wrong with incentivizing behaviors that benefit the environment through legislation.

I hate the way corporations hide behind the plight of 'working people'. And the sheeple drink that tripe whole. ALWAYS. Reason the uber rich won't allow the Bush tax cuts to expire and return back to 39% from 36%, as they were written to do??? Small business, i.e., the working people.
Forget about the $700 billion dollars it will add to the deficit over the next 10 years.

Clue, the plight of multi-billion dollar global corporations and the 'plight of the working people' in this country couldn't be more opposite.

Corporate profit should not be the end game at the expense of EVERY social cost/benefit.

It's disgusting the way corporatists and conservatives alike have made environmentalism an ideological issue, that's the real crime.

Be careful with that word "hate". "Working people" aren't just corporations. Working people are the mom and pop shops that are barely turning a profit in this over-regulated business environment. The mom and pop business that are putting their kids through college.

When environmentalist wage war on money and corporations (their great satan), they also wage war on small business because they each are dependent on the other. Hating business is dangerous.

This isn't a joke-right? I mean, it's really happening? It's sort of happening. In one sense, it's happening: http://www.avemaria.com/Default.aspx In another sense, it's been massively slowed down by the recession. And in the most important sense, the kinds of restrictions Monaghan wanted to impose on residences and businesses he quickly found out that by law he can't enforce. It's going to be a combination far-right religious university combined with an over-55 community marketed through churches, so I wouldn't expect a gay pride parade there any time soon. But it won't be illegal to sell pornography there, just a bad idea because the residents will probably boycott you if you do.
