Wee Lionel for me too. And he seems like a nice lad, not like Ronaldo who has an ego the size of Old Trafford and the Bernabeu combined.

I think by any standards Ronaldo is one of the best strikers to have emerged in the last ten years; the difference to me is that Messi is the more complete player, his overall repertoire of skills is wider than Ronaldo's, and his ability to read the game is also superior. But if the poll were Pele or Messi, Pele would win -he was, and remains, quite simply the most intelligent and entertaining footballer of the last 100 years: crucially, he performed as well for his country as for his various clubs -both Messi and Ronaldo have been disappointing national team players.
Ronaldo could in theory be bought -I read somewhere of a $100m bid from Chelsea; Messi cannot be sold -what figure do you put on such a player?
Finally, consider the players Messi has around him -would Messi be as stellar if he was playing for, shall we say, Wolves?
Ronaldo is a wonderful player but the little genius is better

Still going with messi, at least he beat the keeper and hit the bar with his penalty... right ?? :D x

I don't think it was ever in doubt, notwithstanding Ronaldo's goal tally for the season so far -apparently Messi has already played over 100 games this season -there is a limit even for him. However, beating the keeper doesn't mean anything if the ball doesn't end up in the score-bag, as they say in America.

On the admittedly limited evidence of the two ties this week, Tony Kroos of Bayern is better than either of them.

Messi bring's goal's and assist's - he make's a good team a great team little bugger will be burnt out if Barca keep on playing him in every game they are involved in. After Ronaldo's 2 goals (1 a pen) you barely even noticed he was playing....
Also you get the feeling Messi is pretty down to earth & doesn't have such an high opinion of himelf but the same cannot be said of Cockhound Ronaldo lol. If he could he would eat himself like some on here
PS - Sammi your new avatar is as good as your last one

ronaldo used to famously go missing in the big games v the "top 4" for man united, then trounce teams like wigan. I admit he has come a long way since then, but i dont think he is mr team player and i dont rate a lot of his performances in the big games when compared to messi. both fantastic, but messi all day every day... ..... after gerrard anyway :D ahem..lol

Hmmm Ronaldo has scored 59 goals and apparently that isn't good enough! How many players in the top flight of top football score even 30? That Messi is a better player I concede, but I don't know how anyone can argue with 59 goals in Spain and all other competitions...ps I heard a wild, crazy rumour that Liverpool won a football game at home, is it true?

To be fair, Chelsea rested quite a few players in preparation for the Champions League Final.
This was their midweek trio on Tuesday night.

A weak team and they got battered like a weak team should, coulda/shoulda been 6+ easily, it was fun and made up for kenny for last home game to go that way
haha. Odd tactic considering top4 was still possible, now it is not. All eggs in on basket eh... Chelsea lose V bayern and no champions league....

and you missed the two before ?:) Ronaldos boss at battering wank teams, every now and again he pulls out of the bag in a big match.

As a human being, Messi is infinitely more admirable, no question. But Ronaldo can be great on his day, and he certainly was last night.
Best player of the tournament so far is the exotically-named Schweinsteiger* of Germany.

Ronaldo has a lot to prove, and he may have started it last night. He needs to become the top goalscorer in the tournament, I feel, before anyone recognises that for all the show, he is a great footballer.

I was told I couldn't get a tv signal because I lacked a black box, when I thought it was something about aerials and dishes and roofs -so I splashed out on a set-top box and hey presto! television! But the licence costs £24 a month for the first 6 months....the only programme I have watched other than the football was a documentary about a teenage transexual from Hull called Rhia. I won't be going to Hull in the near future...I spent one night in Cleethorpes some years ago, and once was enough.

I was cycing through England...had chosen Grimsby as my destination...reached Grimsby and just sort of cycled through it, more or less in despair. Cleethorpes because I was tired. Knocked at the door of a B&B, a simple man in a string vest answered the door: Can you cum back in haf an hour only me mam's at bingo...arrived at another where the owner, a very very large lady had a seat in the kitchen at the opposite end of the corridor from the front door -Blackpool had nothing in that particular witch. Headed out to gaze across the North Sea, but all I could see was a mile or so of 'sand' with something resembling the sea shimmering on the horizon. Made do with a Chinese (the alternative was fish 'n chips), cycled out of there as soon as possible the following morning, to the relative civility of Leeds. If it was a night to remember, the question is, why can't I forget it?

So far what has been noticeable is that Steven Gerrard is playing well, I haven't seen him playing this well since that 5-1 defeat of Germany. I wonder if John Terry has now taken his rightful place in the rear of the dressing room, my impression is that in South Africa a lot of the internal dissent was generated by his colossal ego. The pass that Gerrard gave to Carroll for the goal in the Sweden game was sensational; he has also been driving at the defence in the absence of tame Scott Parker, and could be the key that unlocks the Italian defence
What do people make of Balotelli? Is he going to be England's nemesis?

Hmmm, well I am struggling to recall Gerrard's sterling performances in recent years. Did you see te ITV coverage of the England-Ukraine match? Jamie Carragher, asked about the visual quip that Rooney made after scoring his goal -apparently something to do with hair-gel, said that for a Croxteth lad Rooney should be ashamed to put anything on his hair...it sounded quite funny at the time, possibly because Jamie has an accent as wide as the Mersey. Rooney looks a few yards short of his fitness, one hopes he improves.

you probably will struggle cos he hasnt single handedly carried england like has us at times, however the key words are consistant level of performence for england, he has always been the best or one of the best in the side, regardless of them winning or losing including our last world cup humiliation. "shit for england" is a myth, just no istanbul or cardiff final cameos (to name but the famous ones for simplicity). :)
england managers have spent far to many long years debating if "lamps and stevie" could play together or not lol

And both Ericcson and Capello continually played him out of position and asked him to do a job that didn't match his strengths. Hodgson has had the sense, maybe the wisdom, to put him at the heart of things and perform the same role that he does for Liverpool. Bloody obvious, really.
