We've done the 1960 and the 1990s thread is underway. So why not the 1970s.
I'll start with just one album. Horses by Patti Smith. Her version of the old Them song "Gloria" has surely one of the greatest opening lines in rock...."Jesus died for someone's sins but not mine."

Too damn many great albums to mention, the 70's was probably the best decade for albums and genre defying ones at that, it's such a vast array of styles from Pop to Prog to Punk to Reggae to Glam to Heavy Rock, be hard to pick a list but i don't think any great albums of the 70s list is complete without these classics:
Bob Dylan-Blood On The Tracks/Desire
Joni Mitchell-Blue, Hejira
Stevie Wonder-Innervisions, Talking Book
The Clash-London Calling
Television-Marquee Moon
Roxy Music-For Your Pleasure
King Crimson-Red
Elvis Costello And The Attractions-This Years Model
Wire-Chairs Missing
XTC-Drums And Wires
Little Feat-Sailin Shoes
Randy Newman-12 Songs/Good Old Boys
Lou Reed-Berlin
John Cale-Paris 1919
Sparks-Kimono My House/Propaganda
Jackson Browne-Late For The Sky
Marvin Gaye-What's Goin On
10cc-Sheet Music
Curtis Mayfield-Curtis/Roots
Patti Smith-Horses
Bob Marley And The Wailers-Catch A Fire
Funkadelic-Maggot Brain
Kraftwerk-Autobahn
Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris-Grievous Angel
Gene Clark-No Other
Free-Fire And Water
Nick Drake-Five Leaves Left/Bryter Later/Pink Moon
Neil Young-Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere/After The Gold Rush/Tonight's The Night/On The Beach/Live Rust
Sure i've missed some out such is the amount of quality albums released during that decade, hard to pick one that stands out but my personal favourite is probably Television's awesome Marquee Moon, the oddest mix of Punk and Prog that unlike most punk albums released during 77 lays down the blueprint for the new wave that was just around the corner.

:Bowdown:the seventies was the decline of the hippie culture and the emergence of the cults ie punk, mod, teddyboy ,rocker, rockabilly ,skinhead, rude boy=god bless them, and these music forms started to move forward along with northern soul, disco, hard punk=cockney rejects and heavy metal groups

I don't know...I always considered Some Girls to be the last great Stones album, and the first good one post-Exile. Why the decline, do you think? Keith kicking heroin? Mick Taylor quitting? Ronnie joining? Greater influence of Mick Jagger on the songwriting?

My favorite Big Star song, from Radio City.
Big Star-O My Soul - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pbnekl_rE-8)
That's an awesome tune but then what isn't on Radio City this is probably my personal fave
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS6M80aY2KE
As for Chilton he was always down on himself, i think deep down he knew he'd created works of absolute quality with both No1 Record and Radio City that when both albums bombed he grew angry and disdainful (almost like a protective skin to save himself from the misery of the bands failure) hence why Third/Sister Lovers was so ramshackle and keen to downplay it's pop leanings, i think some refer to it as cutting ones nose off to spite ones face lol
Anyways i love all 3 albums and count them amongst the finest of the decade and i honestly couldn't pick a fave, it really does depend what sorta mood i'm in.

I'm pretty sure most of the punk bands listened to these guys and yet strangely they are often overlooked when it comes to those artists that influenced punk, this song rarely gets played due to it being the follow up to the awesome This Town Ain't Big Enough but it still sounds great nearly 40 years later and is that Pretty Vacant's Bass line i hear in there.

I saw Chilton back in '87 or '88, when I could first get into clubs, not too long after he released High Priest. I kept calling for "O My Soul" throughout the show, and I think I pissed him off a little. When they came out for the encore, he said they couldn't play it because his current band didn't know how to. They did do other Big Star stuff like "In the Street," "When My Baby's Beside Me," and "September Gurls." Great show.

Sounds good mate, he was a strange one was Alex but i suppose that is what made him such a talent and let's not forget Chris Bell either, another really talented musician.
I'm still to this day astounded how they weren't huge, they had everything going for them, great songs, a charismatic, eccentric frontman and a shit hot band (Jody Stephens is a seriously underrated drummer), that first album should have been huge and propelled them to the superstardom they so deserved, still conversely i'm unsure how Chilton would have dealt with that.

Sorry to be so absolute on such a subjective discussion, but IMHO the defining album released in the 70's is 4 Way Street. I touched subjects from racial discrimination in the south , to Kent State, to the chaotic Democratic Convention in Chicago, to the sexual experimentation of Graham Nash, to questions of freedom and it's cost.
