The director of the James Bond film Die Another Day has been arrested in a prostitution sting while dressed in drag, police claimed.
Lee Tamahori, whose films include Once Were Warriors and Mulholland Falls, allegedly approached an undercover police officer in Hollywood and offered to perform a sex act for money.
He was wearing a long black wig and an off-the-shoulder dress when arrested, according to Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city attorney's office.
The New Zealand-born director, 55, is accused of soliciting and loitering with intent to commit prostitution. He will appear in court on Feb 24. The charges carry a maximum jail sentence of six months.
Mr Mateljan said police were running a prostitution sting when Tamahori approached the officer, who was sitting in a car. The director is free on $2,000 bail. His lawyer, Mark Geragos, did not immediately return calls for comment.
Tamahori, whose mother is British and father is Maori, directed Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry in 2002's Die Another Day.
The arrest took place on Santa Monica Boulevard close to where Eddie Murphy, the actor, was alleged to have picked up a transvestite prostitute in May 1997. He was not charged. In June 1995, Hugh Grant was arrested on Sunset Strip for soliciting a prostitute, Divine Brown. He was fined and placed on probation for two years.
