we try not to have bad ones mate ,it's a sign you are a westie[hill billy] if you have one. they use words like yizz=meaning you,and dog is the worst swear word they have because they use other swear words so much in their every day language .another thing they say is me mates instead of my mates and they have names like bazza, gazza, wazza, and the girls=shazza, cazza,

I know no one else cares about this, but the Australian accent (or more accurately, dialect) derives from East London Cockney, where most of the early English immigrants came from.

Just thought y'all would want to know in case there's a quiz.

That's where Dick Van Dyke is from.

Yes, Dick Van Dyke is the originator of Australian English.

Cockney is the dialect that drops the "h" at the front of words such as "hello." And the long "i" vowel in words like "time" sound like "oy" as in "toym". It's one of the most lively and distinctive English dialects. In fact, the Cockney dialect is thought to have been the predominant London dialect during the Elizabethan era, but was marginalized as others came to dominate.

I don't know why I brought this up, I've never even been to Australia. I'm a student of the history of English, though. My own is upper Midwest American. The kind everyone sounds like when they sing in English.

The accents in Oz vary in the same way they do in most countries, go to Vaucluse and it's a plummy almost upper class english accent, far north queensland and everything is said in a slow drawl.

As for Cockney - it had some influence but not as much as Irish. Many early immigrants (forced and unforced were Irish)

I am curious,, do fellow Australians hear the accent? I mean do they hear an Australian accent like we Americans hear? Or do you all sound like American accents to each other? Does that make any sense? What I mean is, I don't hear an accent when I talk, it just sounds like,, well,, normal words, is that the same with you guys, does it just sound normal or do you get a picture in your head of Crocodile Dundee every time you hear a fellow Australian talk.

I know that my post sounds messed up, but maybe someone out there can understand what i am trying to say, cause i lack the knowledge of word usage to make myself write clearer.

My brother-in-law is a German who has lived in Sydney since the 60s. He can tell most Aussie accents including the different ones in and around Sydney. And there are plenty of variations. Bear in mind that apart from the coastal strip that more or less runs from Victoria, through New South Wales and into Queensland is about the only connective tissue on the continent. Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Fremantle are 1,000s of miles from any comparatively sized towns or cities, and they each have their distinctive accents.

Can Russ or any of the other Aussies here advise on what is the Australian equivalent of BBC English over there? I assume it's what you hear on ABC but I could be wrong.

OK, I'm a Brit, but for me there's a huge variation in American accents - Boston is different from everywhere else in New England, way different from New York, the coastal south is very different from inland, Louisiana is unique as is Texas, which has about ten subdivisions, LA is very different from SF and so on.....

And I've got no handle at all for the mid-west. Isn't it just for flying over anyway? ;)
