GARDEN GROVE, Orange County, California – A woman is behind bars after police say she poisoned her husband, cut off his penis and threw it in the garbage disposal because he "deserved it."

At about 9 p.m. Monday, officers went to a home in the 1400 block of Flower Street after a woman called 911 and reported a medical emergency, Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale said.Officers found a 51-year-old man tied to the bed and bleeding from his groin, he said. The man, who has not been identified, underwent emergency surgery at UCI Medical Center in Orange and was listed in serious condition, Nightengale said.

The 48-year-old woman, Catherine Kieu Becker, is accused of using an unknown poison or drug in her husband's food to make him sleepy, Nightengale said. She then tied him to the bed and, as he woke up, she cut off his penis with a knife, Nightengale said.

She tossed the penis in the garbage disposal and turned it on, Nightengale said. She told responding officers that he "deserved it," Nightengale said.

The victim told detectives that he believed there was something wrong with the food Becker prepared for him, Nightengale said.

Becker and the victim are going through a divorce, he said.

Becker was arrested on suspicion of aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, administering a drug with intent to commit a felony, poisoning and spousal abuse, Nightengale said.

The investigation is ongoing.

This reminds me of a gal I used to work with who put an asshole who used to brag about beating his wife in his place by telling him: "You gotta sleep sometime." I find it hard to believe, to begin with, that anyone could say "OJ stopped her in her tracks. Good for him." This was a woman who was in her own home. OJ's crime was not self-defense.

That blows my mind. I've lost all respect for Dino.

Giovanni also shocks me. This article contained absolutely NO BACKGROUND story on what led up to her doing what she did. There are battered women in this world who suffer DECADES of physical and psychological abuse. How can either of them just assume that she's not one of them?

I'd be more comfortable hearing about a woman who's the victim of domestic abuse later KILL her husband than read about her cutting off his penis.

There's a greater level of brutality involved IMO when a man/woman deliberately mutilates their oppressor/antagonist that goes beyond simple murder.

It's like when you read some of the documented reports of Black men lynched in the South, and their lynchers had to go for the gold by cutting off the lynched man's balls and testicles and stuffing them in the victim's mouth AFTER they were hung.

Typically I will say that IMO when most women retaliate in a violent fashion against their partner, it's usually the result of prior emotional and physical abuse, whereas men who abuse women do so because they view women as non-equals and their natural subordinates, therefore worthy of punishment, like a child.

But come on, some women have very short fuses, to put it kindly, and are more prone to respond in a violent way to any emotional stress in a relationship when it's not really justified.

GARDEN GROVE – A woman accused of cutting off her estranged husband's penis and putting it through a garbage disposal was placed under psychological observation after making her first court appearance Wednesday, authorities said.

Catherine Kieu Becker, 48, was being held at Orange County Jail, where she was placed in the medical ward to be psychologically evaluated, said Jim Amormino, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Prosecutors said Becker got into an argument with her husband about friends staying at the Garden Grove condominium they shared. Susan Kang Schroeder, chief of staff of the Orange County District Attorney's Office, declined to speak in more detail but said the friends were not romantically involved with either Becker or her husband.

"It wasn't like one of them had a boyfriend or girlfriend" staying at the house, Schroeder said.

Becker was charged Wednesday with felony torture, aggravated mayhem and sentencing enhancements for great bodily injury and personal use of a knife. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison with the possibility of parole.

Becker, who appeared in a blue jail jumpsuit with her long, dark hair hanging in front of her face, was assigned a public defender. She did not speak, except to answer "Yes" when the judge asked if she agreed to postpone her arraignment.

Her arraignment was set for July 22 at the West Justice Center in Westminster. Judge Debra Carrillo ordered her held without bail.

"It's hard to believe what would motivate a person to do this sort of thing," said Susan Kang Schroeder, chief of staff of the Orange County District Attorney's Office, outside of court. "It's one of the worst things you can do to a person short of killing them."

Detectives interviewed the 60-year-old victim Tuesday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he underwent surgery and was listed in good condition, Garden Grove police Lt. Jeff Nightengale said.

"The detective described his demeanor as in 'surprisingly good spirits' for everything that he has gone through," Nightengale said.

On Monday night, officers went to a condominium in the 14000 block of Flower Street after a woman called 911 and reported a medical emergency, Nightengale said.

Becker met officers at the door and told them that he "deserved it" before pointing to the bedroom where her husband was tied to the bed and bleeding profusely from the groin, Nightengale said.

Becker, a licensed real estate saleswoman, is accused of using an unknown poison or drug in her husband's food to make him sleepy, Nightengale said. According to the allegations, she then tied him to the bed with nylon rope and, as he woke up, she cut off his penis with a sharp, 10-inch kitchen knife, Nightengale said.

She tossed the penis in the garbage disposal and turned it on, Nightengale said.

The District Attorney's Office did not include poisoning among the charges it filed against Becker because it is still awaiting the results of toxicology tests on the victim, Schroeder said.

The couple married Dec. 29, 2009, in Tehachapi. They separated in April, and the victim filed for divorce in May, citing "irreconcilable differences," according to court records.

INVESTIGATORS, OTHERS SHOCKED AT PENIS SEVERING

GARDEN GROVE – It's the type of crime that instantly becomes a "talker" – a story that goes viral because of its lurid, stomach-churning details:

A woman, according to police, slices off the penis of her estranged husband while he is drugged up and tied to their bed. She then deposits his penis in the garbage disposal and grinds it up into pieces.

He "deserved it," Garden Grove police say of the explanation allegedly given by suspect Catherine Lieu Becker, 48, who is behind bars on suspicion of Monday night's attack.

About the only people not talking about the crime – at least publicly – are the woman arrested in the crime and the 60-year-old victim, who are in the process of divorcing after getting married in December 2009. The victim filed for divorce in May, citing "irreconcilable differences."

Veteran Orange County Sheriff's Department investigators, private investigators, divorce attorneys and relationship therapists expressed shock at the maiming, and speculated that a jealousy-fueled rage may have been behind an attack still under investigation.

"I've been a private investigator and have worked in law enforcement for 10 years," said Ali Ammar, who handles hundreds of divorce and domestic disputes a year with Orange Detective Agency in Irvine.

"I've seen people with their heads blown off, but this story makes me cringe," Ammar said. "It's very hard to surprise me. This story surprised me."

Divorces bring out the worst in people, said Nicole Whyte, a family law specialist at Bremer, Whyte, Brown and O'Meara in Newport Beach.

"In family law, you see the best of people acting their worst," Whyte said. "The absolutely worst sides of people come out – sometimes reducing them to inhumane wrecks."

Jeff Brown has handled many disturbing domestic violence and sex-crime cases as an investigator with the Orange County Sheriff's Department for 11 years.

"This case obviously is sexually motivated, I think," Brown said.

He said it has all the earmarks of a case involving a suspect who launched into a jealous rage – something he's come across countless times.

Brown has seen victims who've had their hair chopped off "to make them look ugly," or a photo of them cut into pieces and burned in the backyard – all "extreme" actions, he said.

This case, however, reaches a higher – lower? – level of depravity, Brown said.

"Cutting off his penis didn't surprise me – I've seen a lot of horrific violence," the investigator said. "For me, putting it in the garbage disposal was the worst part. Now, that's extreme extreme."

Sharon Gerstenzang, a psychologist and author at the Relationship Therapy Center in Fountain Valley, said the violent act may have sprung from the suspect feeling humiliated or shamed.

"She, in turn, wanted to mortify him – and mortification goes beyond humiliation," Gerstenzang said.

She likened the act of slicing off a penis to the practice of female castration in some parts of Africa and the Middle East – mutilation that is meant to control and subjugate females.

"It's like cutting off his identity," she said. "It's hurting him as much emotionally as physically."

Actual infidelity may have had nothing to do with the crime, according to Gerstenzang.

"I think it may have had to do with his disloyalty to her – clearly, she felt he was not in her court," she said. "It may have been vengeance for the feeling of, 'You're not there for me,' whether there was actual infidelity or not. Maybe he was just emotionally distant."

There have been other notorious cases of similar ilk – notably, the maiming of John Wayne Bobbitt in 1993 by his wife, Lorena. Doctors were able to reattach Bobbitt's penis and he acted for a while in porn movies.

The victim in the Garden Grove penis-slicing incident was reported to be in "good condition" Wednesday, though he declined to speak to the Register. Garden Grove police were able to retrieve some pieces of his penis, but no other details were revealed.

The majority of domestic violence cases involve a male suspect and a female victim, Brown said – making the Becker case even more notorious.

A similarly lurid case that happened a quarter-century ago in California involved the more common male-on-female violence.

In 1984, gynecologist Dr. Glenn C. Millar was accused of deliberately sewing shut his wife's vagina to punish her for having an affair. In 1987, a San Luis Obispo jury ordered Millar and an associate to pay the woman $6 million.

The continuing weak economy is forcing more spouses to continue living together even as they sue for divorce, according to Ammar.

"That can cause a lot of strain in the relationship," he said.

Gerstenzang agreed.

"It can be a recipe for disaster."

Whyte, the family law attorney, likened the act of slicing off a penis and grinding it in the garbage disposal to "worse than criminal – not even an animal would do that."

She added: "You just don't know what someone is capable of until they are pushed to the brink – and that's what divorce does."

PROSECUTOR: VENGEFUL WIFE SLICED OFF HUSBAND'S PENIS

SANTA ANA – A jealous and vengeful Garden Grove woman drugged her estranged husband's tofu with sleeping pills, tied him to a bed and hacked off his penis with one swift slash of a 10-inch kitchen knife, an Orange County prosecutor told a jury Wednesday.

"You deserve it," Catherine Kieu yelled at her drowsy husband three times just before she attacked, Deputy District Attorney John Christl said in his opening statement of Kieu's torture and aggravated mayhem trial.

The July 11, 2011, incident was captured on a voice-activated audio recorder Kieu had covertly placed in the bedroom, Christl said. The recording will show that the husband awoke just before the attack and found his angry wife yelling at him from the foot of the bed with the knife in her hand, Christl said.

The recording also captured Kieu tossing the severed organ into the garbage disposal and turning on the power switch, the prosecutor added. The penis was retrieved but it was mangled too badly to be reattached. The husband was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for emergency treatment and survived.

Kieu, 50, was a controlling, manipulative woman who was extremely jealous and enraged over her husband's plans to divorce her and because he was seeing his former girlfriend, Christl said.

The attack was planned and premeditated, Christl insisted, and was committed for the sake of Kieu's "vengeance, vanity and jealousy."

But Deputy Public Defender Frank Bittar insisted that Kieu did not have the mental state required to be convicted of mayhem and torture because she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder caused in part by a horrible childhood in war-torn Vietnam in the 1960s, when she was repeatedly raped by an older brother after her mother died when she was 5.

Kieu's mental illness became worse over time because she did not seek treatment for cultural reasons, Bittar said.

Her 13-year first marriage ended amicably but a second marriage to an older man she met in a gym was dysfunctional from the beginning, Bittar told the jury. That husband – the victim – subjected Kieu to verbal and sexual abuse and then filed for a divorce while they continued to live together in his Garden Grove home.

By the date of the attack, Kieu's mental illness was worsening, Bittar said. "She was hypervigilant, felt anxiety, was compulsive, paranoid and depressed," the defense attorney added. "Her reality was impaired."

The trial before Superior Court Judge Richard Toohey is expected to last about two weeks.

Kieu, who is also charged with in the penalty-enhancing allegations of inflicting great bodily injury and use of knife, faces a life term in prison with the possibility of parole if convicted.

WOMAN GUILTY IN HUSBAND'S PENIS SLICING

SANTA ANA – A Garden Grove woman sat motionless in court Monday when an Orange County jury convicted her of slicing off her estranged husband's penis.

The jury of eight women and four men deliberated about four hours before finding Catherine Kieu, 50, guilty of torture and aggravated mayhem in the crime prosecutors said was driven by her "vengeance, vanity and jealousy," to retaliate for his plans to divorce her.

Her defense attorney argued that cultural factors led Kieu to keep what he said were her husband's sexual and physical abuse bottled up and her untreated mental health conditions from childhood caused "a break with reality."

Jurors in Superior Court Judge Richard Toohey's courtroom also found that Kieu used a knife in the crime. She now faces 52 years to life in prison at her June 28 sentencing.

Deputy District Attorney John Christl portrayed Kieu, 50, as a controlling, manipulative woman who was extremely jealous and enraged over her husband's plans to divorce her and because he was seeing his former girlfriend.

The victim, Christl said, continues to suffer a "great deal of psychological and emotional pain."

"But he is a strong individual, and he will get through this," he added.

The July 11, 2011, penis slicing incident was captured on a voice-activated audio recorder Kieu covertly placed in the bedroom.

Bittar said Kieu suffered childhood trauma growing up and then fleeing war-torn Vietnam. Kieu did not get treated for post-traumatic stress disorder from being repeatedly raped by an older brother after her mother died when she was 5, he said.

Her 13-year first marriage ended amicably but a second marriage to the older man she met in a gym was dysfunctional from the beginning, Bittar has said. That husband – the victim – abused Kieu and then filed for a divorce while they continued to live together in his Garden Grove home, according to Bittar.

Her life in Vietnam and subsequent escape was tough, the prosecutor said, "but it doesn't change the fact she sliced off the penis due to her vengeance, vanity and jealousy," Christl said.

Time was running out and she was about to lose the best thing she had in her life, Christl said, punctuating his argument with the words: The husband "deserved better."

"She took away everything but his life that day," Christl said. She "permanently deprived him of his manhood for the rest of his life."
