New gimmick? He is the best wrestler alive. No gimmicks needed.

Did you see him last night? I think he will become the new face of professional wrestling. He will be successful where Cena failed. Cena only appeals to kids and horny women. Punk appeals to the masses; children, men, and women.

Sorry for being an ass, that's just my nature. Let me try a more mature approach: What is the appeal of pro wrestling to adults? I liked it when I was a kid. But by the time I was 12 and realized what was going on it just seemed silly, a bunch of grown men playing dress-up.

So what is the appeal? Do you suspend disbelief for the 40 minutes it is on TV?

For me I enjoy it plain and simple sure it is fixed but I don't think most pro athletes could do what the men and woman in the WWE do let alone keep up with the schedule, I would think most would quit after running the ropes for 5 minutes and taking two bodyslams.. And I realize they are not trying to kill eachother it is called
sports entertainment for a reason and when done right it is beautifull.

And yes CM Punk is awesome

There's actually quite a few former olympians that went into pro wrestling. Before MMA that was pretty much the only avenue besides coaching.

By that logic I assume you don't enjoy movies either. Or did those Die Hard flicks actually seem plausible to you? The appeal is that you get to see shit there you would never see in real life.

As far as I'm concerned there are two types of people: Those that are willing to believe that Superman can fly, and those that aren't. If you can't, you're missing out.

How can he be a heel when he's over with the entire crowd? You have him come to the ring and lay it out like it is and the crowd is in the palm of his hand.
..then Cena comes down (in his home town!)and is booed to shit, even though Vince and his cronies have spent the best part of a decade trying to make him the new Hogan.

He's the best guy with a mic though, probably the best since the Attitude era.

That's kinda what I meant when I said he's the new Ric Flair. Flair was the quintessential heel, but over time he become such a cornerstone of pro wrestling that it was practically impossible for him to be booed, the people just loved him too much. Punk is achieving that with the way he presents himself. Plus if you watch how Punk interacts with crowd, it's Flair-like in that he actually messes with them, rather than just running to the ring robotically and not even really acknowledging there is a crowd. Cena is more like the early WCW version of Hogan, in that the crowd is almost consistently split against him, with women and little kids cheering him, and men booing him.

That's alright, it's not for everyone. Obviously, I know it's scripted. I just like the performance aspect of it. Mixing the athleticism with entertainment is, well, entertaining. Not to be an ass myself, but I doubt most of the people in porn are really as into it as they are acting like they are, and yet, it's still entertaining!:)

Yep, I saw him last night. Very cool. He has the potential to start a new era that goes beyond Cena, just like how Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels went beyond Hogan in the mid 90s. Cena is a failure in terms of being the new Hogan, McMahon has tried to recreate the PG era before the attitude era and position Cena as the new Hogan, but it just hasn't been as successful.

In post-Benoit wrestling times, it's definitely a good thing to have a guy on your roster who you know won't become a pathetic junkie. I haven't watched wrestling in years but would be interested if anyone has a link to Punk's face-off with Vince MacMahon. I heard Cena showed up in his home town and crickets were heckling him.

Here it is. A lot of insiders are saying that, depending on what happens at the PPV this Sunday, Money In The Bank, which is in Punk's hometown of Chicago, this angle has the potential to make an impact as big as Austin's first stunner on McMahon.

:iagree: Cena comes in and starts in with goofy jokes. He really needs a Hollywood Hogan moment and turn heel.

I wonder if he could pull off the heel character as he did years ago. Everything about the guy is so stale and uninteresting. He badly needs a complete overhaul of his character.

Yeah, his original smart ass rapper heel gimmick was actually really entertaining, now he's just Hogan-lite. Hopefully this program with Punk will spur some change. It'll suck if it's just the same old, same old Cena at Summerslam this year.

He's too old to do any rapper gimmick. That would make him even more corny.

Make him pull a Sgt Slaughter and turn on the USA. Make him defect to China and get a heel China Man Manager. A lot of Cena's babyface character has a lot to do with cheap pops for Patriotism. Might not be the best idea but it's the best one I can think of in my present state.

That's actually a good idea. They could do a double switch and have Punk turn face at the same time like the Austin/Hart match at Wrestlemania 13. There needs to be a good stable these days too, I say give Cena a bunch of young bucks to run with, who aren't green, like McIntyre, Ziggler, and Rhodes, and really stir shit up. With all the economic troubles over the last few years, mix your Cena being sympathetic to China with a snooty rich star athlete Cena, who is too good to pander to regular people anymore. That'll set up Punk as the people's champ.

Yeah, I think they actually did change the name to WWE Entertainment. So, it's not even an acronym for World Wrestling Entertainment anymore, the company name is WWE, no mention of wrestling allowed. Which is why it was funny when Punk kept saying wrestling on the show.

Most likely finish for MITB PPV:

Punk beats Cena in a long grueling match.

Winner of MITB comes out to take advantage of a tired, beat up CM Punk, they win the title.

Although Cena loses the match, he isn't fired since CM Punk didn't leave with the belt, and Punk goes away for about a month or two.

Vince wanted to call it World Wide Entertainment when they lost the rights to use WWF but the board voted against him.

The same way Austin was.

Eventually they did a double switch with Austin and Bret Hart turning Austin face and Hart heal in the match refed by Ken Shamrock.

Austin was knocked out and Hart refused to break the sharpshooter.

I think Vince McMahon (an absolute genius) refers to it as: sports entertainment. As there is athletics involved. And a diversion or entertainment aspect to it does exist.
I watched it quite religiously as a kid. Not so much anymore.
But I did like Shawn Michaels:

And Sean Michaels:

i see a dude in a thong and stockings talking gibberish that makes no sense whatsoever, but seems to be very dramatic for whatever reason. seems like every other thread in the general discussion, except the subject is usually a stripper or pornstar, which makes their source of income more sports related than wrestling. and of course, unlike most of the other trannies here, cm punk does not use drugs (other than roids obviously).
