I liked the song but after watching the clip I'm left wondering once again - How does Jennifer Lopez get to judge a talent competition like this????

Ha! I'll still rather watch him than Sharon Osbourne! Ozzy is the man, but Sharon just pisses me off!

I suppose that shows like this have a role to play like the roman circuses of old, exploiting the weak - and let's be honest, in most cases the hideously untalented - and getting us to laugh/support/argue.

But it has little if anything to do with talent. They sing songs previously written and recorded by prominent artists, and set out to reproduce note for note, cadence for cadence, a perfect carbon copy of the original. "Talent" would take the song, slow it down, speed it up, do something different and make it new.

It also gives a totally wrong impression of the music business. It's tough, you pay your dues in pubs and clubs and you might just get the breaks, but it certainly isn't about five minutes of exposure on prime time.

I love Alyssa, but when she enthused about the girl singing an Adele song, my first reaction was, why not listen to Adele? 20 times better than that poor lass.

OK, rant over. Next up, the royal fucking wedding. :hide-1:

:iagree: I couldn't agree more about paying your dues to be in the music biz. You have to really love music to play in little scuzzy clubs in front of two people night after night until you make it, rather than getting verbally blown by over-the-hill musicians in front of millions of people while doing cover songs. As for the royal wedding, I wonder if they will show any of it on TV?:)

That's my world, baby!

As for the wedding, I'm in the minority in the UK in that I'm a republican - not to be compared with the crazy right-wing fuckwits in the US, of course (lights blue touchpaper and retires to a safe distance  ) - and would rather not be ruled by an outmoded and hierarchical institution which does as much as anything else to bolster class inequalities. That said, I bear Wills and Kate no ill will at a personal level. They seem like a decent, well-intentioned couple - we even went to the same university! Tom Paine said, "Kill the king but spare the man." I'll go along with that.

But the pomp, the pageantry, and more than anything the wall to wall blasting from every media is too much to bear.

I may do a day trip to Calais next Friday, drink some good red wine and sing the Marseillaise all day.

You know I heard about republicans(not like the American Republican Party) in the UK just a few days ago on the radio, which I found amazing, because I always wondered why there wasn't a bigger movement like that in the UK, and then it turns out that there kind of was, the media just doesn't really mention it! I agree that they do seem like nice people and I love that Tom Paine quote! It's really interesting to me to actually hear someone in the UK's opinion about the wedding, as here in America, we just kind of hear about the frills and hype of the wedding, rather than what the average citizen of the UK feels about it.

Sad to say, this sort of event shrinks the republican minority even further as people simply get swept up in it. In that sense I'm far from the "average citizen".

Oh, and there's another thing. If you live in a republic, you're a citizen. If you live in a monarchy, you're a subject. Some might argue that that's just semantics, and for most purposes it is, but it still means that in theory at least, you bow the knee.

Maybe we should move the wedding stuff to its own thread.

Hey Alyssa, that wasn't meant to be a poke at you. Entirely cool with your view.

I just wish that contestants on these shows would do something original or sing something they've written themselves.
