Recently i went and saw Rent the movie I didnt like it ...I had saw it before previously on broadway and though it was awesome ...But for some reason on the big screen it seemed extra boring ....I kept wishing for them to stop singing and act god dammit :? and for some reason taye diggs seems tottally outta place for me ..I think they should have kept a fresh face of actors..Maybe it was so much more interesting the first time cause it was live and on broadway ..

Did anyone else see "Rent" The movie and if u did what was ur views?

I really, really liked the movie. I plan on getting it on DVD.

I didn't see it on Broadway, but I did see it when it was playing live in LA. I enjoyed it then as well. Of course, the live version had an energy that I don't think you can get on film, but the movie had some nice things that didn't come across as good live, IMO.

With the movie, I love the sequence with Angel & Tom "I'll Cover You". It was so sweet. I also thought "Another Day" worked really well on screen. And of course, the ending is always both a tearjerker and inspiring.

Jesse L. Martin, Rosario Dawson were both awesome.

Overall, I got goosebumps and cried in both the stage version and the film.

Hi everyone,

RENT is an excellent movie musical. I have the DVD and it's one of my favs to re-watch because of the songs, the musical arrangements, the sexy women, cute guys, the sets, the atmosphere, the whole thing is just great.
If anyone ever buys this DVD, make sure it has disc 2 with all the special features. Disc 2 allows you to watch the subtitles in English which is great when trying to follow the many voices all singing different parts at the same time (like in a classical opera).

I like musical theater as well as classical opera and i have seen several productions such as:
The Phantom of the Opera (twice); Les Misérables (twice); Aida; Mama I Want to Sing, to name only a few.
I've seen The Phantom and Les Mis on film and there were pretty good to watch. Nothing beats the stage productions sometimes, but movies offer the viewer a totally different view of the story. Close ups and stuff like that can only be in a movie to see the tears in their eyes. When you are on the balcony watching a live performance, it's not the same. So both movies and stage productions offer different benefits. Of course, there's nothing like "being there" and seeing how the whole story unfold on a stage - it's flawlessly done and is truly amazing, but movies you can watch at home in your pj's with popcorn.

Anyway, like the other poster in this thread, i cried a few times while watching RENT. It's well done.
I have tried to watch live productions of RENT on youtube and..nah...i much prefer the movie. Maybe, if i could sit in the audience i might like it, but on youtube?.. the sound is usually not so great and i became so accustomed to the film actors anyway, so, not many people can fill their shoes, in my opinion. Rosario Dawson (Mimi) is simply yummy looking in the move, they all are.
Angel, although played by a male, sounds and sings very much like a woman. In the live shows, they have a woman playing Angel and it doesn't work for me. I've been spoiled by the movie cast.
I think the cast is simply fantastic. However, Anthony Rapp, as good as he is, the way he sings words that begin with the letter 'P' annoys me as it sounds like he spits the word out like, Sylvester J. Pussycat Sr, from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons.

What is really sad about RENT is that the main man behind the story who wrote ALL the songs, Johnathon Larson, died, freakishly, the night the stage production first hit the satge, so he never got to see his dream come alive. That's sad. On disc 2, there is a documentary about him teh writing of his musical play - that alone is heart breaking

Anyway, i did a quick search on youtube for some selections from the movie so those of you who are interested, can have a look. These selections are in the same order as in the film. I tried to find a full movie verison but youtube says, "No", to that, so single song clips it will have to be.
There is much more to see, so buy the DVD.

Enjoy!

I don't know if you have a theater sound system, but, sometimes improving the audio makes a big difference. Especially musicals.
