In addition to more and better types of hormones and surgical techniques, I think a big reason for this phenomenon is awareness. Young people are far more knowledgeable about the options they have. Think back 20-30 years, before the internet, and where would a young teen learn all the details needed to figure out how to transition early?

Plus, there's less and less stigma attached to transitioning. Not that TS girls are fully accepted today, by any means, but the general attitude of society is gradually becoming more accepting/understanding, which will prompt more young people to consider transitioning.

So, more social acceptance + easily obtained knowledge + more easily available hormones + improved surgical techniques = people transitioning at a younger age, which is well established as a reason for more feminine results.

You go to youtube and there are thousands and thousands, in 5 more years I bet things are going to start changing big time for ts girls in a good way. Great post and saved me from answering a lot.
Before the internet there was no way for young girl wannabe's to see that there were other people out there, similar to them. So apart from those in the cities or from cultures which may have had a few around, they were pretty much by themselves and maybe developed late, if ever.

The advent of the internet has allowed people to see that there are similar people to themselves. To set up social networks and support groups and encouraged these girls to realize that they're not freaks or all that different. Consequentially, many can seek medical options earlier.

The internet has also shown that a transsexual doesn't have to be an over-blown stereotype of what the media has shown us as "joke" characters and that you can fit into society looking like a mainstream female.
