I would think the only way the military would allow transgender to serve is if they are post-op. Also in response to the OP title "if they let gays into the military..." There have always been gays in the military. Some of them serve openly even prior to the campaign to drop the DADT policy. There was a guy that I served with and everyone knew he was gay. He had pictures of his boyfriend and nobody cared.
