I just came back from the UFC Gym.
They gave me a tour and as a gym goes its massive and overs all sorts of things.
First.
The girls that work there are smoking hot.
But I noticed that I was the only black guy there and thats odd considering the size of the place.
I kinda dont think they can do much for me.
I asked about the boxing coach and I am going to go back and talk to him and watch a class.

WTF are you trying to say? The girls are hot but there aren't enough black men there for you and therefore you don't think you're going to get much?

Probably best. Assuming you're young and hoping to eventually compete professionally in boxing. I'm unaware of any successful pro fighters launching their amateur record out of a UFC Gym. But maybe I'm wrong.

If I'm not wrong then it's best to find a serious boxing gym.

On the other hand, if you're just looking to build stellar novice or experienced amateur hands, for self defense, not hoping for a future professional career, then a UFC Gym would strike me as perfectly reasonable.

But you can get very sound, well rounded fight game, from an MMA gym. You'll learn how to strike with more than just your hands, plus you'll learn grappling skills.

But maybe you just want to focus on one area at a time. If so... that's not the worse choice on earth. That's better than not training in anything or trying to learn too much at once. I guess it just depends on the route one wants to take.

Really, for most street confrontations one doesn't need to be an MMA star or Muhammad Ali. Most people that fight on the street have rather inferior fighting skills. So, most well trained amateur fighters with at 2 or so years of training, should usually win against the average street thug.

But that aside, both boxing and MMA have there limitations. In prison or on the streets edged weapons can become a realistic threat. FMA like Escrima can develop some helpful skills against knife attacks or fighting with a knife.

There's not a whole lot to help you if a person is standing at a distance with a gun or rifle.

Those places are for posers that want to tell everyone that they train MMA, but never actually fight. They wear the shirts and act tough, but never end throwing blows. Its a glorified Golds Gym, poser central.

If you want to learn MMA, then go to a MMA gym. If you want to learn boxing or TMA, Karate, BJJ, etc, then go to a dojo that teaches that stuff and has full contact sparring. Anything else and your just lifting weights and hitting pads, and that's not fighting.

I love it when a poser comes into my MMA school and acts like he's the shit. It is my favorite person to spar with. They can't believe this fat old bastard could move so fast, or just made them look foolish. They rarely last more than a month or two. We all laugh about it.

SB, was that video of the real life you?

I'm not here in this thread to bash anyone, make fun of them, or try and embarrass anyone.

I know the world places a lot of glamor and value on being one of the "tough guys," and I've been told by a former professional boxer (not even a high ranked or well known one) that women love to flirt with fighters as they travel overseas and so forth.

But I say this in all charity - I think my silence would be more of a knife... whilst some rank on you - but you have never trained (maybe a day or two but I would doubt even a month) in boxing gym. If that is an honest video of the real life you, I would stop posting it, it will only invite trouble for you.

If you would really like to fight go to a good amateur gym. Go to one that is either free or one that only charges a small monthly or yearly sum even a cat working at Burger King could afford.

And watch out in the boxing world. There are trainers that know what they're doing, have been former pro fighters, and will work for a sum of money with a person like you from the ground up. But they are rare. And if they push you quickly (matter of months) to enter into a professional fight with them as your manager, they are being paid to get your person beaten the hell up while your opponent gets his recorded "padded." There is a lot of shady dealing going on in the boxing world. It happens in MMA too. I know someone that entered an MMA fight in Racine or Kenosha, Wisconsin and they guy was twice the size (and more skilled) than he was suppose to be. Needless to say, the person I know lost. I did not see the fight but he recounted it to me.

You need an amateur gym and that is all. Preferably a free one. You will never be a professional champ. You are too old combined with a lack of natural skills. Your movements also betray you as someone that has never been in real street fights. And believe me... you can develop some solid, worth while, boxing skills that you can use to kick ass on the streets, at a free amateur gym. Some of these inner-city community centers charge, but only a small fee. So, go to one of those. There is no need for you to dish out $100 or more a month on a trainer.

Peace, homie.

(P.S. Please - at this point - never agree to a backyard fight with a Thai boxer, homie. You will get seriously [literally, and I'm not joking] hurt. You don't know how to throw upper cuts or hooks with your elbows, your knees and kicks are untrained too)

Hitting a bag, posting it on youtube and other sites the worst form of posing-trying to make people who don't train and know nothing about the sport think you're the shit.

So lets see some sparring or fight videos.

Lots of MMA folks look down on boxing, they regard it at stale, and they think its less aplicable in real life, whereas with MMA they can get most serious damadge in real life...

I couldn't agree more (no, not that a fat old bastard can move so quickly) but that many MMA guys are really less talented than they think. I've been training in karate (Okinawan and Japanese styles) for over 30 years. Mixed-up Martial Artists are deluded into thinking that they can actually spar someone other than another MMA trained fighter and when they rush my legs for a take down, an elbow to the back of their head (actually I strike the shoulder muscle because I don't have to worry how hard I hit) usually takes the wind out of their sails. MMA tries to be too many things too quickly and does it too badly. Better to pick one style, boxing, karate, BBJ and train the shit out it and if necessary supplement it with another art after about 10-15 years. Old Japanese saying "Chase too many rabbits at one time and all you'll do is go hungry"

Go to the wildcard gym and ask to be a sparring partner.

Wildcard is a boxing gym. Setting aside for the moment we're on different coasts, I respect boxers greatly and most boxers aren't MMA types. I wouldn't go to any club or dojo and ask to be a sparring partner. That wasn't my point or the original posters point. Read my post again... "Better to pick one style, boxing, karate, BBJ and train the shit out it and if necessary supplement it with another art after about 10-15 years.." Hey, there're a lot of folks in plenty of styles who think that they're invincible. I know I'm not. It's once you think you're invincible is when you're most definitely not.

Boxing is a sport, not a street fight. I'm sure there are a lot of MMA fighters that would get the shit kicked out of them if they went in the ring with a pro boxer. Granted MMA is probably a better style of fighting if you want to be able to go to a club and kick the shit out of people.

Boxing is a sport but most fights break out with-in punching distance and with very little warning. In that scenario would you rather be in a fight with Tyson in his prime or Lesnar in his prime?

Obviouslyneither, but if it had to be one, Lesnar, If a prime Tyson took a shot ant anyone on the street they would be out cold from the first punch that landed, while I wouldn't want to fight Lesnar either obviously.

Fact is punches end fights instantly, try grappling someone to the ground and putting them in some sort of submission and the guys mates will be booting you in the back of the head.

If you can stay on your feet and throw accurate, devestating punches, you have a much better chance imo, and thats more tysons game than lesnar

You got my point Inferno. It was hypothetical. Of course no one here would want to fight Tyson or Lesner. All would get squashed by either. My point is that MMA is a sport too. Fights don't occur with two guys charging across a room at each other. They usually happen within striking distance. If goes to the ground, of course a wrestler has an advantage.

yeah, but no matter who you are, fighting in the street is a stupid and wreckless idea, gone are the days of two guys standing outside the pub trading punches until one goes down and thats the end of it, now you got everyones mates joining in, hitting you from behind, people pulling weapons, no matter who you are it's just to dangerous unless you are ABSOLOUTLEY forced into it to protect your missus or something.
