Hi everybody.
I love these cars.
I try to put together all the specifications I could find on the Internet for years 1975/1976. I used mostly:

The lincoln, buick, olds, and cadillac are the ones you need to pay attention to, as those were the ones from your list that saw hearse conversions.

I used to have a 1976 Plymouth Volare wagon with a slant 6 engine. It was very good at accumulating rust holes in the body.

My folks used to have a 1972 Plymouth Satellite wagon with the 318 V8 (the 440 drank too much gas). My dad dropped a 4 barrel on it. It was cool, but we've moved on.
I'd still like to have a 1968 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser...or a 1992 one!

Those slant 6 engines were bullet proof though. Knowing how durable they were we tried to blow up a friends b4 sending it to the bone yard by putting a big brick on the gas pedal in park. After 5+ minutes his Dad came out and yelled at us to shut it off. Also you could R&R the starter in about 5 minutes.

Huh? I never heard of any station wagons used in hearses. Those were usually commerical vehicle foundations like the Fleetwood limo's had. Maybe low budget auxillary cars or flower cars were made from sedans or station wagons. Those hearse conversions usually had a convertable interior from what I remember and were called combo cars. Rather then the hearse sit in the garage until someone croaked, they had an option package that fitted a an equipment cabinet and a long storage chest/seat forming a channel for a gurney to function as an ambulance. Lights and rear windows were interchangable with a roller bier for the casket and a second seat for the family when in hearse mode. Nothing at all to do with a station wagon. Feds and insurance companies forced the combos off the streets in the late 70's requiring ambulances and rescue vehicles to be based on 1 ton truck frames.

It's not so simple, many of the earlier conversions were based off of convertibles but not all. Also this is the time when the ambulance-hearse combos were losing their popularity as first responders started to switching to van-based ambulances. Then when the feds reformed a few regulations towards the end of the 70s the final nail in the coffin was put in, (...pun intended). I think the last American combo was made in 78 and I do not believe there were many being made in the last few years before that.
Towards the end of the 70s most American hearses were based off of station wagons because by that point in time they were for some (not all) brands actually wider than any other model being offered at the time. Made it a lot easier to make three-way loaders in a time when car sizes were shrinking. By the 80s most American hearses were station-wagon based.
If you go far enough back, before they started using convertibles they used panel wagons and trucks for hearse conversions.

Girly-girls are usually too intimidated by them to learn how to drive them.
