It's about time!!!

An initiative to legalize marijuana and allow it to be sold and taxed will appear on the November ballot, state election officials announced Wednesday, triggering what will probably be a much-watched campaign that once again puts California on the forefront of the nation's debate over whether to soften drug laws.

The number of valid signatures reported by Los Angeles County, submitted minutes before Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline, put the measure well beyond the 433,971 it needed to be certified. Supporters turned in 694,248 signatures, collecting them in every county except Alpine. County election officials estimated that 523,531 were valid.

New York needs to do something about this as well. You can't even get a prescription for it in NY yet, but in New Jersey you can. It's a bunch of bullshit that some states you can smoke weed and others you can't. You would think that New York would have it if other states do, why is NY not allowing it yet? Makes no sense.

I don't know if this is pro-pot hype, but I've heard it suggested often; that legalizing it would do wonders for our shitty economy. Not to mention, why do we spend tax dollars on putting pot heads in jail for even a minute? Let's make booze illegal for a while, if we're so concerned about wasted people driving motor vehicles. Pot heads would stay home and listen to their Doors and Snoop albums, right? ;)

Legalization and decriminalization are two totally different approaches, and honestly, I'm not a supporter of legalization.

Legalization will allow cannabis to be taxed and sold legally in any shop that can sell tobacco products. A lot of people back this method because it'd mean the price of cannabis would drop, quality would rise, and the state would be able to gross tax revenue.

On the other hand, how many people are at the very least supplementing their income growing and selling weed? Personally, I think it'd be irresponsible as hell to legalize marijuana because there are far too many people who have to depend on growing to earn a reasonable income. If legalized, the street value of cannabis would drop drastically, making home grow operations obsolete. The price of heating and lighting wouldn't be offset by selling a crop at that point. Growing out in the open is an invite to get your ass robbed.

I think legalization would pull the crutch out from hundreds of thousands of Americans and leave them with no other option than moving onto the meth, coke, and pharmaceutical markets. I'd further serve to flood unemployment with a hell of a lot of pot heads and it'd give companies and corporations yet another reason to be weary about hiring.

Decriminalization would allow growers to continue growing and selling at near current street value. As a buyer, decriminalization would allow anyone to go buy as much pot as they wanted to, take it anywhere they want to, smoke it outside, roll a joint, and pass it to a police officer for a off-duty smoke out.

There are some arguments against decriminalization, too. Anyone who could afford to pay for electricity could in theory grow a few plants. A lot of people would assume the market would flood with noob grows and low-quality weed, but I really doubt it. Pot has a pretty distinct smell, and not everyone could deal with a house or apartment which constantly smells like salty skunk. Others might grow a few plants to harvest and smoke personally, and the rest boils down to basic and unadulterated democracy. If people don't buy pot from noob grows, eventually the noobs will have to pick up quality or leave growing to people who actually know what they're doing.

Anyway... it's speculative, but I don't think it's responsible to pitch legalization over decriminalization. :smoking
