welcome to HA. If you want a good higher res camera go with a Nikon D3000 or any of the Canon Rebel line dSLR's. Great cameras for the money and you can always upgrade the lenses later on. Good luck.

As for the camera- get a cheap tripod as well, works great with a timer. A Canon DSLR is relatively cheap but gets excellent results. If you can afford it, get a separate flash that 'bounces' (does indirect flash via the ceiling). Makes the results MUCH nicer.
