anyone in the market for one?

I like their promise of longer battery life compared to your average laptop. Makes for a nice traveling device. I keep seeing offers with Windows 7 starter though and really don't want that - its too restrictive. I'd rather stick with XP than get a neutered OS.

For portabilty, I have the Asus 1000HE, dual booting
Linux and Windoze.

My other laptop hurts my back when I carry it.

For CPU and memory intensive work, I use my desktops.

For watching videos, I rip videos on another machine and then put them on my hd via my network, or with an external hard drive.

I also have been able to install the various programs that I need via this method.

So far, I have been able to avoid buying the $99 external DVD-RW that you can use with the netbook.

I can run Dreamweaver - Photoshop CS4, Word or other MS suite apps, multiple browsers, though admittedly I don't do any gaming.

I'm very, very pleased with my 1000HE Netbook, so much so that I have gotten 3 other people to purchase one.

I had been looking at the HP netbooks when they first came out, but didn't like the price and specs, glad I waited.

And when an Asus came out, who I love for their mobos, that sealed the deal.

7 hour battery life, extremely light, can run just about any app I
need it to, decent sized screen, and keyboard, great to travel with,
and it's an Asus, I'm very, very pleased.

I'd be tempted to use OpenOffice on a netbook just to keep costs down

Dell - Inspiron Laptop for $450.

Intel® Pentium dual-core
3gb ram [expandable to 8GB.]
250gb hard drive
14" screen
(5lbs) weight
6Cell battery
life Of up to 5 hours and 29 minutes.

but what's the battery life on that dell laptop?
the 6 hour range of most netbooks w/ a 6 cell battery is hard to beat.

I got rid of a 14" Gateway with a sub-par battery life of 2+ hours, was rated for 4, but never happened, it was 4.7 pounds.

Have a 2nd Asus, 14 inch screen, 4+ pounds, gives me 7 hours of run time,
but I still find myself carrying the Netbook consistently.

my netbook came with 6cell. At the time they were claiming 7hrs which I knew was not gonna happen.

It came with Xp home, with wifi on I get about 4-4 1/2 hours.

I have one of the first generation acer aspire one and its time to upgrade that to a newer netbook. It was great for a while but the keyboard started getting smaller as well as the screen. It was a 9" model with 160GB drive. The solid state drives are nice and fast but space was an issue when running XP

Most of the models out there are pretty good nowadays. I would reccommend getting one with at least 2 gb, Win 7, 10" or bigger screen, and by all means a 6-cell or larger battery. You can install mac os on the dells. Ive read it works great

gotta be careful w/ hackintosh
the latest snow leopard update removes support for atom processor based netbooks so you'd need to avoid that update

i do hear that dell's are relatively easy to convert and run mac os

I pulled the trigger on this one:

HP Mini 110-1109NR 10.1-Inch
HP has 6 cell batteries on sale, that plus a coupon, plus Bing cash back and I got a good netbook + 2 batteries

looks like Amazon is clearing out their stock of XP netbooks. prices are starting to dip under $300 for a few models & brands

I'd like to hackintosh a netbook, have done some desktops.

Would be great to have something as small as Air, but at a
Netbook price.

i'd convert mine, but everything i own is windows so having a single mac os machine (without a dvd drive for that matter) would be a little weird

but it's white so it looks macish, right?

I'm looking for a portable back up to my main laptop but most of the netbooks I see in BestBuy still come with windows 7 STARTER edition.

should I just go with one that has XP basic ?
which is the best value in netbooks these days ?

I think all come with VGA output plug,
If your plasma has VGA you should be ok.
