Why he could not play bass, when the Pistols played live his Amp was turned down and Steve Jones the guitarist used to play in a lower key.
Never Mind The Bollocks was recorded when Vicious was in hospital suffering from yellow jaundice.Steve Jones played both bass and lead on that record.
Sid was a puppet, the real Pistols bass player and the original was Glenn Matlock.

Not really a bassist but a multi-instrumentalist, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. That bassline in Ramble On is one of my favourite things ever.

http://www.rocksbackpages.com/furniture/artists/jones_johnpaul.jpg

Paul Simonon of The Clash, the bassline in London Calling was one of the things that caused me to buy a bass guitar in high school.

http://www.castlenews.com/london-calling.jpg

Matt Freeman of Rancid, the other reason I bought a bass in high school, specifically the 58 second mark of this song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bimNMiz250.

Some you got right...Graham, Claypool, Jaco, Jamerson, Clarke, Caron, Wooten, Mingus (although you forgot Ron Carter)...Most you based on your favorite genre...Flea, Michael Henderson (tho I get the inference), Burton, Sting...all good but clearly not the best. Some are just WTF!?!?! No names mentioned...

Geddy Lee - Rush

For shame.

Finally someone with a brain in their head. All these choices I've seen are cute and all, but the best bass player of all time is Geddy Lee of RUSH. He plays some of the most wicked bass lines and does this while singing and playing keyboards with his foot. No other bass player does this. I challenge anyone to name another. Aside from playing three roles simultaneously, he plays complex pieces without giving them a lot. He's a gifted bass player that's won many awards for his talent and expertise.

IMO Punk is in fact boring and people with even sub-par IQs can play that style of music. And may I add, Farang, I think Bassman might not be an old-phuck, but chances are, he has a more evolved taste in music than those who listen to a more juvenile, punk variety. FTW

Some people might find Rush boring..but they're a rock band you don't see much of anymore; just three members..who excel on all their instruments.

(although "Muse" seems kinda like that)

lupinIII

That's a dumb critique of punk, it's like saying that all prog-rockers are boring fat-cunts with rods up their arses, too busy wanking off their instruments instead of getting on with it, and playing the goddamn song. The fact is some people love the rage and energy of a good punk song, some love the intricacy and virtuosity of a classic rock song. Unfortunately for most sub-cultures, this love comes with a certain mutual exclusivity.

And, a band still pumping out great quality music to sold out crowds. No classic act is doing that today. That includes, the Stones, AC/DC, Aerosmith, etc. They still rely on their hits from the past to lure fans to concerts. Rush uses the past and the present to thrill their fans.

Tal was well mentioned. She'll one day be a very common name in discussions of bass masters.

But what of MeShelle Ndegeocello, the miles davis of the bass? The tasty tease of her jam at the beginning is an example - she's easiest one of the best Pockets in the world, yet, she old gives you so much. But trust: her discs are legendary.

Niels-Henning Řrsted Pedersen (The Great Dane with the never-ending name), played years with Oscar Peterson. Ron Carter is an other favorite but I am sure he was mentioned earlier.

Not only incredible energy from the three most talented musicians but check out Geddy's stunning musicanship from keyboards to complex bass all while singing.

All of the guys mentioned in this thread are nothing compared to the player in this video. His bass kicks in at 0'37.

A true master of his instrument... ;)

Lots of the usual suspects from the metal and prog eras.

Others - Bakithi Kumalo, plays with Paul Simon

Jack Bruce, Cream

And from my edge of the musical planet:

Danny Thompson, ex-Pentangle

Ashley Hutchings, godfather of British folk-rock

Miranda Sykes, Show of Hands and solo

Dave Pegg, Fairport Convention

....and seriously wild with a drink in him. He once got drunk with the late and much missed John Martyn, sobered up first, and proceeded to nail Martyn via his collar, elbows, trousers and socks to the floor.

Last saw him in Cambridge a couple of years back doing an acoustic evening with his namesake, Richard Thompson. Not often you have the privilege of hearing the best acoustic bass player and the finest acoustic guitarist - and songwriter - under the same roof.

You're quite right - this was back in the 70s.

And John Martyn was a real wild bastard. When he arrived in a town for a gig, he'd find a bar and pick a fight with the hardest man there, just to get the buzz going before he went on stage.

I could write a book about my encounters with these guys. Have you read Joe Boyd's White Bicycles?

Claypool
Wooten
Bootsy
Jaco
Porter
Geddy
Stanley Clarke
Robbie Shakespeare
McCartney
John Paul Jones

But I amazed that no one has mentioned Phil Lesh from the Dead he changed the way the bass was played with his Phil bombs

also honorable mention for Mike Gordon of Phish and Dave Driewitz from Ween

Yep - Paul McCartney is actually a very melodic bass player. John Entwhistle from The Who was good also - but in part with rock bass players it is the context, the overall intention and sound. So in heavy metal its part of creating tht overwhelming power. No subtlety. Which is why most of my favourites are from the jazz field where a far greater variety of style and flexibility is possible. There is crossover though.

Listen to Jaco Pastoius on these Joni Mitchell tracks from her album Hejira..
