As someone born and partly raised in Maine, with extensive family there, I am deeply disappointed that the electorate voted down the same sex marriage law passed by the state legislature. I had hoped that Mainers' sense of independence and equality would win over their conservative tendencies. The civil liberties of a minority should never be controlled by the majority: 40 years ago interracial marriage was illegal, but as a civil right was legalized. Likewise women's sufferage. Sigh.

Hm, so is it a coincidence that most Stephen King stories are set in Maine?

Damn. That is dissapointing. We're still holding our breath in WA on the expansion of domestic partnership laws - Referendum 71 or "everything but marriage". It looks like it might squeak by but still too close to call at this point
