Although all religions are nutty, one of the even weirder claims about early visits to the Americas is that of Jesus, as written in the Book of Mormon...

Yes, absolutely! That's part of my point. Why not honor Ericson? Teach our kids the truth.
Columbus is a cancer that we need to eradicate from our history. F-columbus day :thumbsdown

Just another poorly written left wing rant trying to apply 21st century norms and morals to things that happened 500 years ago. In the words of Chief Wiggins, "Nothing to see here. Move along".

Why not honor the Chinese that got to the west coast before the vikings got to North America

Sweep it under the carpet huh? Just like what whitey tried to do with the Blacks circa Southern US Mid '60's. The truth is not a "rant". If the facts scare you, then you should move along and let the adults deal with the truth.

Or maybe an Irish monk before before the Chinese

I think we're being a little too hard on Chris
It took a lotta balls to get on those tiny wooden boats and go across the ocean, especially when most people of his era thought the world was flat

what kind of bathroom and shower facilities did they have ?

While the Norse were the first to cross over to N.A. I still can appreciate what Columbus (concerning seamanship) accomplished. I'm still horrified at what he saw "justified" concerning raping and pillaging the locals.

I'm baffled that we still honor this tyrant. What will it take to show our 6th grade history books are wrong?

Hey, Marcus Garvey is never mentioned in our history books......why....'cause he's Black!???

I don't know the answers, I just like "some" truth........

Wow. Not sure how my comment had anything to do with 1960's American race relations. Go ahead and try to fit some more square pegs in round holes.

I have another theory.

I think it was Eric The Viking who first discovered the Americas. They even made a documentary about it. With Tim Robbins.

And here's my proof...look how cute Imogen Stubbs is!

Helge Marcus Ingstad (30 December 1899 – 29 March 2001) was a Norwegian explorer. After mapping some Norse settlements, Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine, an archaeologist, in 1963 found remnants of a Viking settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows in the Province of Newfoundland in Canada. With that they were the first to prove conclusively that the Greenlandic Norsemen had found a way across the Atlantic Ocean to North America, roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus and John Cabot. He also thought that the mysterious disappearance of the Greenland Viking settlement in the 14/15th century could be explained by their emigration to North America.

He was honorary member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He also held honorary doctorates at the University of Oslo, Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, and at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He was awarded the meritorial Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, Knight of the Order of Vasa, and he was presented with the Red Cross sign of honor for his efforts in Finnmark during World War II. He received a lifetime government grant from the Norwegian government from 1970. In 1986 he was presented Arts Council Norway's honor award.
