I too like Pete Townsend but must go with Alex Lifeson of Rush with his classic La Villa Strangiato.

Or look at all his best - and there are too many to count.

I actually downloaded a torrent file titled "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" a year or two ago. It was fucking awesome. Had a couple head scratchers but I would highly recommend it if you see it around.

Probably not the best and it gets looked over because of "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water" but really good IMO.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was the great music that made people like the Who.

Everybody has different tastes but why do you consider them a joke? Who do you like then?

The late Rory Gallagher was my favorite guitarist. Picking his best solo is almost an impossible task since he had so many of them. Tattoo-d Lady is a perfect example of Rory doing what he does best, shredding the guitar!

That is awesome! Even though they begin to clash a bit after the 6 minute mark rather than compliment one another but it's so easy to look past that and see such mastery.

I've never seen that before. That was incredible!

Check out Tommy Tedesco(session player who performed on early Steely Dan songs).Duanne Allman's slide work.Albert King,Buddy Guy.
Carlos Santana had two albums in the early seventies :Caravanserai and Borboletto.Neither were commercial successes but both were incredible.
