Castile soap is a very traditional soap made from olive oil, originally 100% olive oil from the Castile region of Spain. It's been used since the 16th century or longer. The quality depends upon the quality of the oil from which it's made; if made from extra virgin olive oil it will be high quality.

While true castile soap is 100% olive oil, actually superior soaps are made with between 80% and 90% olive oil with other ingredients to provide better lather and emollients healthful to the skin. Pure olive oil or castile soap is gentle to the skin as well as cleansing.

Castile soap is great for situations when you have a limited water supply as it rinses off quickly and lowers your water bill showering. It's also great for a baby's gentle first soap. My ex-mother-in-law used to buy a lavender scented castile soap for my daughters from a mill in Canada. It's also used medically for soapsuds enemas.

Dr Bronner's Castile is an extremely versatile product which can be used not only as a soap but to make home cleansers, dishwashing and laundry soap, and even for shaving. But it's not a true Castile, since it is made of a blend of olive oil and coconut oil, and is harsher and more drying than a pure Castile soap.

Coconut oil is better for oily skin, but not for dry or sensitive skin. Pure Castile is good for people with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, chemically sensitive and delicate skin in general.

For a pure Castile, try Elysian Dream Castile soap, which is made of 100% organic extra virgin olive oil and nothing else. Or check at Whole Foods to see what 100% Castile they carry.

However, there are additional oils which are very healthful and can be found in high quality Castile soaps: jojoba oil (actualy a waxy ester, the closest thing in nature to human sebum or skin oil), shea butter, and/or hemp oil. All are great for the skin, and to its credit, Dr Bronner's liquid Castile soap includes jojoba and shea butter.

It also lathers real well in hard water.

I've never used it with softened water.
