View Full Version : What are your thoughts on 'Ghosts'

I know this is a pretty random topic, but was just watching haunted homes on Sky, i think alot of it is a load of hogswash. 3 people were in this haunted house overnight, believing there was someone there (they were all believers and they were seeing and hearing things) . LAter a skeptic went in and all he came across was a peaceful suburban house.

My thoughts on ghosts are as follows.
The mind is pretty powerfull, so powerful that it can create an image (a mental manifestation, rather than physical). Two examples...

1) I am in the desert lost and yearning for water, i have been walking for a day and my mouth is parched- in the distance i see what looks like a water hole with a bit of riparian vegetation around it, I start to walk a bit quicker and when i get close i realise there is nothing there.

2) My nana lost her daughter (my aunty) 30 years ago, the daughter was on the back of a motorcycle which hit a powerpole hurling her onto the road and killing her instantly. MY nana was sad because she never got to say how much she loved her daughter and never got to say goodbye. One evening my nana got up to go to the toilet and there was her daughter (aged about 8- she died when she was 18) watching cartoons on the television, nana went over and stood beside her and said 'I love you so much and I miss you heaps' and said goodbye. MY nana created this image with her mind and in a way it helped her, because in a way she thought it was a spirit of her daughter and she was able to say a final goodbye.

All im going to say is the mind is uber powerfull!

This isnt a bad ghost video though hmm

I'd have to agree with you that the mind just projects things in ways people don't often understand.

Many of the stories I've read, for instance regarding ghosts at Gettysburg, sound so much like PTSD that its not even funny.

That people claim to see ghosts more often at night probably has something to do with it as well. There are various sleep stages that aren't deep sleep where the brain easily gets confused into not knowing whether you're awake or asleep, and since that's when most people usually sleep...

I have to agree, they don't exist. But they are a great source of revenue. Sarah mentioned the ghost of Gettysburg. They are a big part of the tourist industry there. Even a lot a small towns with nothing happening, you can buy a ticket to tour the creepy, haunted spots and hear stories of romantic suicides, mass murders and other who met unhappy ends. Not to mention the revenue they produce in the form of books, movies and tv shows. Everyone likes a good ghost story. Even unbelievers like me.

I agree. The most effective horror stories to me are ones that deal in death / afterlife. Blood and gore movies are just funny. The Others is an example.

I hear ya. Here's a sure remedy to avoid an encounter with ghosts: Keep a rabbit's foot on your key chain, hang a horse shoe on your wall, never walk under ladders, or break a mirror, never cross paths with a black cat, don't step on cracks. oh, and make sure to see your palm reader at least twice a year.

Poltergeists are a bit harder to explain. THey do ghost bus tours here, the tour takes in churches, castles etc all with local folklore surrounding them (ie a hooded monk that walks the ground of the church), they do the tours at dusk to add to the so called 'effect'

I didn't believe in ghosts until I was 9. I thought it was just stuff adults made up to scare us. I grew up in south Florida and although most of the buildings and houses there are pretty new, there are a few older places like St. Augustine, which is actually one of the earliest U.S. cities. My uncle had a place there that supposedly was built in the late 17th century. It almost became a historical landmark before my uncle bought it.

My brother and I stayed there one summer and it was probably one of the creepiest times of my life. Every night, my brother and I would hear moaning coming from outside the door (he and I stayed in the same room), and sometimes we'd wake up in the morning and there would be handprints on the door inside the room, even though we would lock it.

One night about 3 weeks into the summer, things changed for the worst. My brother passed out early from fishing all day, but I somehow worked up the nerve to see if I could actually see the ghost. When I heard the moaning, I tried to sneak the door open so I could "catch" the ghost, but when I opened it up, nothing was there. I decided it might be better if I pretended to be asleep, so I got into bed and hid under the covers.

Sure enough, about fifteen minutes later I saw the sliding glass door ease open and a figure came in. I couldn't tell if it was floating or not, but it kinda made its way over to the bed. I started freaking out, but I knew I had to keep pretending I was asleep to make sure I didn't scare the ghost away before I could get a closer look.

As I laid there, the ghost bent over and slowly pulled the sheets down. I cracked my eyes open and couldn't believe what I was seeing. The ghost looked just like my uncle. It must have been an ancient dead relative of his. As I kept my charade up, the ghost reached into my shorts and started touching my thighs, working its dead hands up my legs until finally his cold, clammy hands wrapped around my tiny unit and tugged on it until I got an erection. I was so terrified of the ghost that I just sat there and took it without making a move. This probably happened about 60-70 times during the summer. Each time I was too terrified to move, although a couple nights I accidentally moaned out of fear.

To this day, I'm scared to death of ghosts and I wish I could get the guts to tell my uncle to get the hell out of his house before something terrible happens to him.

Guess the ghost wasn't 'dead' yet.

Too late for you. It's a fact, siblings who use a Ouija board are doomed. Only cure is to wear some garlic around your neck and drink the blood of a goat killed on a rainy Monday.

Look Ghosts are not real. There are not powdery white apparitions running around going "boo" and feeling stuck in some house, hotel or other building.

Spirits, however, now that's a horse of a different color.

Why's it always "in white"?

rockabilly

it adds to the eerieness. Most times 'she' is seen hitchhiking home at night ... and white is more visible than dark clothes. Many versions of her story exist.

The Lady in White story is hundreds of years old ... the story i heard was she was a teen girl who ran away and died in a car wreck and her spirit hitchhikes to get back home but she cant face her family and vanishes when you pull up to her house. Like i said many versions of that story exist ... but there is some truth in some stories.

So was the embarrassment that she ran away, or that she rides with so many strangers?

Even if its just 1 guy per week, at 100 years that's over 5,000 rides. Figure at least some of the time they're going to want "something" in exchange for stopping for her.

Or is the embarrassment that she's not slutty enough to met the standards of her overbearing, over ambitious parents? Thus she keeps going for more rides hoping to eventually meet whatever quota they set for her?

This is an Southern pre-civil war hotel that was built in 1849 with over 100 rooms and five stories tall. It was reported that over 50 people were murdered at this famous historical hotel. I had the opportunity to walk thru this old glorious place before semi-demolition and reconstruction began. Here's a couple of pics I took while walking thru the grounds alone on a thunderous stormy morning. Notice any weird things in pictures?
The basement is cold and dark but yet you sweat and your clothes get sticky with moisture. I took one picture down there that will blow your mind! I ran out with goose bumps! Will upload it later......

I don't believe in ghosts and neither do my sibs...except for the fact that we all discovered about 5 years ago that we had all seen the same apparition during different times growing up in the same house. I don't believe in them but I sure have friggin seen one.
