Kettlebells. Quick, very little space required, easy to learn, will keep you strong, fit and lean.
You need a pair of these, btw. I'm sure you could handle a pair of 'em Jhaniah.

Well...after a lull in my life, I'm finally getting back to it. I'm back up to about 20 miles a day on my bike throughout the GTA...but Wednesday is going to be the real kicker as I get my brand new Powerblocks! Be nice not to have to switch plates anymore, and well.....to get some free weights back in the house. Pricey though.
Here they are. And they can be expanded.

They're really cool Jhaniah. You use an interlocking pin to switch weights. Used to be that I could do about 60 lb dumbbell curl..but as I said I went through some stuff...so I'm down to 30-40. I'll be up there again soon though.

I start off with a 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 mile run.
Then eat and rest.
A few hours later situp routine and jumprope.
Then immediately after boxing training.....speedbag half and hour no stopping.
Double end bag 20 minutes no stopping.
Heavy bag 45 minutes working on technique and then combinations.
EAAAT!

yes powerblocks r the shit........ i use them to train some of my clients.... i just hate having to lug those fuckers around i have the 130 lb (each) set.....
if you wanna do shit at home for real cheap buy an iron gym... you can do these exercises with it
chin-ups
push-ups
tricep dips
sit-ups
hanging leg raises
then just do some floor exercises too
leg raises
crunches
squats with bodyweight
plank (face down on elbows and toes)
side plank (facing to the side on right elbow and side of right foot then switch)
and mckenzie press-up
...and of course throw some cardio in there
i just do basic shit....cardio = running or elliptical machine for 60 min a day... stretch b4 and after...basic core workout dips benching lunges leg press push ups and pull ups...i don't hit the heavy weights anymore since i am trying to drop weight...i also mix in some universal and some hammer strength machines...

Yah, my routine isn't as complex. I do bicep curls, shoulder press, dumbbell fly, tricep kickback, squats and touching toes with weights. Then the bike for cardio.
I had 3 pairs of weights before...ended up selling them. It was a complex setup having to go buy additional plates when I increased. This way the powerblocks are all compact. :)

Crazy. I think with me it's a time thing. if I get an hour to two a day I'm happy. I guess i'm not that strict either. If I have the energy I'll do the bike and weights...but some days I'll just skip one of them. Main thing for me is to get something in during the day.

Depends on what you want. I personally didn't want to get huge and I wanted a ton of definition. What most people want is a defined core (which is why I assume you do sit ups). The problem is that sit ups only work your upper abs and you won't have definition in your lower abs and you might retain a paunch if you had one before. You can combat this by doing leg lifts and jack knife sit ups along with sit ups and crunches. I personally do about forty minutes of two sets of 500 sit ups (alternating which two kinds of sit ups I do every morning) every morning at about six (which sounds like a long work out, it's not at all). When you're starting out you'll want to do them slow and controlled to really work the muscles. Also, to burn fat the best thing you can do is list weights. Like I said earlier, I didn't want to get big, but lifting weights actually causes you to burn more fat because the more muscle you have the more calories you'll burn. Guys who get huge generally took years with incredibly large diets. A cardiovascular workout also helps you burn fat if you do it for about 20 to thirty minutes.
wadeintheslade
06-22-2009, 04:39 AM
the wight lifting also will really accelerate muscle growth and weight loss even more than the sit ups that you do if you do it regularly (at least three times a week)

Diet is even more important. Never consider a fad diet, just go with what they taught you in health class. Try to represent all of the food groups in three or more meals a day and make sure your calorie intake is around 2000 (more if you workout regularly, less if you want to lose weight. Generally not recommended you go lower than 1200 calories.)

500 situps - 250 in am, 250 in pm
you use the stairs if you have stairs at home..run up and down them for about 15minutes...
bum clenching, the 6 second squeeze and release you can do this while webcamming/surfing net etc, good for tightenting up the muscles there...
diet is a key thing, myself i am trying to put weight on, but if you get into calories you can gain/lose weight easy enough ... as somestated 2000cal about the average a human needs a day... if your running on bout 1000 you will be losing weight....
Chinup's
Pushups
Burpees
Crunches
Jump Rope
8 count bodybuilders
Its all about calisthenics, do lots of reps as often as you can..

Depends what stomach you want girl .... my stomach has good solid muscles but i am lucky that i also have a layer of fat that cover up so it has that cute pooch look to it.. but stomach muscles are very handy i find to have with other activities ...
remember situps wont give you a flat stomach...people have this view that if they hve a beer belly and just do situps they will look like david beckham stomach, its bullshit if your fat your fat...situps just develop the muscles underneath the fat. only way you get rid of fat is to burn it properly ...
but yes 500 could be excessive if you are stick thin already.. jsut depends what you want to attain :)
myself i quite like abs on males and females...but i also like just like flat tums with a tiny pooch ..
you are pretty trim from what i have seen of you, so i guess you jsut want to aeoribic excersices to keep tht way. so maybe 150 situps. get a skitting rope and one of those balls they are really good to use at home and you can work out many parts of your body xx

500 situps! sounds feminine Situps wont help your stomach.Crunches can but its the least positive addition to doing so.Aerobic exercises is best liberty. Situps and crunches will hurt your lower back after a while. and to be honest a person who weights like 400+ lbs has abs of steel the reason I say this is Everyone has abs. Bigger people have alot of weight mostly around the midsection and well they need to support it by something, that something is muscle and Mostly hard abs.-Best bud is a personal trainer this is exactly what he told me.

the most important thing when doing work out routines is that they don't be "routines", you have to mix it up otherwise your muscles will adapt and that will make your workout less efficient overtime. That is why after working out for a long time, people can't seem to increase their strength anymore.
It also a great idea to get the dumbell from Bowflex that can be any weight you want. It has a dial that can change the weight from 5 lbs all the way to 55 lbs on 1 dumbell, saves tons of space.
My routine which comes from Tony Horton is something like
Monday, Friday: chest, biceps, stomach - push ups with push up bar, pull ups (you can get the pull up bar that attachs too your door frame from big 5 or online), bicep curls (various versions such as bicep curls to the side, regular, twisting bicep curls), and several stomach exercises including setups and standing setups while hanging on a pull up bar, imagination is more important here just mix it up
Tues, Thursday: running, jogging, jumping, cardiovascular stuff
Wed: Legs, some biceps, and stomach again
Sat: Kick boxing
You can probably goggle Tony Horton and buy his workout cds or if you are a pirate, you can download off pirated websites, hope that helps

At my age (33) I relized I was not able to not workout and eat junkfood so I decided to try the P90x program.

Its better to do ALOT of aerobic exercises to lose that core(stomach) weight then lift heavy 3-5 times a week for those who are looking for mass.-I use creatine for muscle mass 30 mins before a workout down it and a extra bottle of water to make sure I dont get dehydrated.then Lift as heavy as I can yes I get DOMS alot.
DOMS-delayed onset muscle soreness
But when you work out with doms-and push yourself your mass has a better build.

That is actually the program I used and now I used PX90 plus. Don't follow the diet religiously through, too busy to get all that crap. Have to eat out a lot. But love the program and I think it works great and like I said you can get it off pirates websites.
But on the program it said if you can't do a pushup or pullup, it is recommended to not do PX90. So if you haven't workout in a long time or just beginning, probably not a good program to start with. Plus you have to have about 1 hr a day to spare for the workout. They do have other programs like P90 that is more "softer." And as you improve in muscle strength, people can make their way to PX90 and eventually PX90 plus.

I checked that out on youtube and that guy had some awesome points. One thing he mentioned which I forgot to say is when you are working out your abs, think about your abs not your legs, or whats on TV. Same if you workout your biceps or any other muscle. Psychology and focus is important in working out I think. That is why I actually recommend don't have the TV on when working out, music is probably okay provided it doesn't distract you from concentrating.

But when you work out with doms-and push yourself your mass has a better build.
OK....WELL FIRST OFF there are many natural supplements on the market that can help with fat loss such as EFA's, Essential Amino Acids, Phospahatidyl Serine, Coffee, etc.
SECOND ... being that aerobic activity is catabolic in nature it's NOT better to do ALOT of aerobic exercise if you want to maintain lean muscle ...if you're goal is to just lose as much weight as possible and increase endurance then do alot of aerobic activity otherwise it needs to be kept at 20-40 minutes @ 65-75% of your max heart rate (220 -age) 3-6 days a week
THIRD.... there is no such thing as "spot reduction" with body fat so doing cardio does not necessarily take it from the stomach first, that all has to do with genetics...it might come off thighs or back first just depends on the person
FIFTH.... DOMS has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with muscle mass. DOMS is simply a temporary buildup of calcium and prostaglandins in the muscle fibers that causes soreness. The only benefit to working a muscle that is still sore from your last workout is the stretch that you may get from doing full range repetitions to avoid excessive tightness in the muscle.
AND A WORD OF ADVICE .... if you're taking creatine for muscle mass you need to be taking it post work out with a 50/50 mix of dextrose/maltodextrin and at least 32 oz of water, otherwise alot of you're creatine is going to waste.... only benefit of taking creatine 1 HOUR (not 30 minutes) before training is some possible increase in strength
SO TO SUM IT ALL UP....everything you just wrote is pretty much incorrect advice ... but then again everyone that reads a couple of FLEX magazines is pro on the subject

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), also sometimes called muscle fever, is the pain or discomfort often felt 24 to 72 hours after exercising and subsides generally within 2 to 3 days. It is commonly thought to be caused by increased lactate concentrations; however, high lactate concentrations from exercise typically subside in the body within an hour, so it can not explain pain experienced days after exercise.
Although the precise cause is still unknown, the type of muscle contraction seems to be a key factor in the development of DOMS. A theory recently developed states that DOMS is caused by the breakdown of muscular fibres. This is particularly apparent in Strength/Resistance programs. The breakdown occurs due to stress, and allows the muscles to grow stronger and larger, as shown through hypertrophy. Exercises that involve many eccentric contractions, such as downhill running, will result in the most severe DOMS. This has been shown to be the result of more muscle cell damage than is seen with typical concentric contractions, in which a muscle successfully shortens during contraction against a load.
Some research claims that DOMS is not caused by the pain from damaged muscle cells, but from the reinforcement process.
The muscle responds to training by reinforcing itself up to and above its previous strength by increasing the size of muscle fibers (muscle hypertrophy). This reinforcement process causes the cells to swell in their compartment and put pressure on nerves and arteries, producing pain.
DOMS typically causes stiffness, swelling, strength loss, and pain.Continued exertion of sore muscles can cause further swelling and pain, and lengthen the period of muscular soreness. There is some scientific evidence that further training—a so-called second bout—has no negative effect on the reinforcement process. Training in a state of constant soreness would be uncomfortable, although one may be able to adapt to it. The relationship between muscular soreness, the rest required, and hypertrophy is a contentious topic in bodybuilding. Claims that perpetual muscular soreness assures muscle growth are opposed by reports of stagnation through overtraining.
Stretching before and after exercise has been suggested as a way of reducing DOMS, as has warming up before exercise, cooling down afterwards, and gently warming the area. However, there is also evidence that the effect of stretching on muscle soreness is negligible. Overstretching itself can cause DOMS. Some recommend contrast showers as a treatment, alternating between cold and hot water; it may increase circulation

ok...ssooooo.... basically that just confirmed what i said about DOMS not having anything to do with muscle mass... so thanks... and yes when it comes to this i pretty much do know everything...at least pretty damn close.... and like i said before everyone that reads a couple FLEX magazines (or in your case wikipedia) seems to think they know it all..... know what your talking about before you speak on it

by the way tha wikipedia article that you ever-so-skillfully copied and pasted is outdated....if you look at the references at the bottom all of that info was taken from 2003-2006 and it is NOW A MEDICAL FACT ... that doms is caused by calcium and prostaglandin buildup in the muscle...this is not something i googled....its what i know from being a professional in the industry

The hottest chicks I know do Yoga, Pilates or Both. Tennis chicks keep it pretty tight too. Mix the three together and you've got a kick ass combo for toning, core strength and cardio. Plus with all the demands of being a woman in today's world, the breathing (pranayama) aspects of yoga can be very good for the mind and the body.

For me the key is to have no "routine" which probably goes against the grain. I'm pretty active, surf daily, rock climb, skate, wakeboard. But I lift as well, basically focusing a certain group of mucles or part of the body for awhile, then seeing where else needs work and adjusting. For example, my legs have gotten huge, and I can't get them into some of my pants, so now I'm working more upper body/chest.
If I feel like going for a run on the beach, I do, if I feel like cycling, then I do that, maybe it's been awhile since I did something and I do it. I do spend a couple of hours each day doing something though.
Now sex, that would be a really good work out, think I need to focus more on that next!
