I think most types of music run their course and rap is no exception. What you get nowadays is mostly watered down or commercialized. I can't remember the last time I was blown away by a new rap album. Nothing wrong with sticking to the old school stuff though!

Every generation goes through that. I'm sure if you were 21 during the early 90's, you'd feel nostalgic for 80's R&B.

It's called 'getting old'. lol

I don't think rock and country are in great shape these days either. In fact, most of what passes for new music is dismal compared to what came before.

When you say new rap, do you mean the mainstream, dross? Aside from a bit of Kanye, a bit of Lupe, and the odd song by Timba, I agree that much of it's a steaming pile of shit. On the other hand, if you go underground and international there's some genuinely fresh, and revitalising music out there. British and Aussie hip-hop groups are doing some really cool stuff that I would highly recommend.

Indeed, the second album he did, A Grand Don't Come For Free, was probably the 1st hip-hop album I really got into.

That song ranks in my top 10 easily, the bit where the music changes as his pill takes effect is by far one of the most atmospheric and evocative moments ever.

there is still plenty of good hip hop these days its just not on tv or the radio. you just have to put in the effort to find it. hip hop is just as good as the 80's 90's now its just on tv or the radio

Go to the last album listened to thread to see what I'm feeling right now.

Most of the music on my media player is the "older" stuff as well. I remember my father telling me that you will continue to listen to stuff you grew up on (he still listens to a lot of Motown and Stax records). I told him I'd keep up with the times. To a point I do, but I still find myself listening to Jodeci, Bell Biv Devoe, early Cordozar Brodaus, and the like. He was right!

Now I've gotta break out my Ready To Die, Reasonable Doubt, and Sex Packets CDs...after I'm through with The Whispers! :D

I don't listen to rap as much these days, but I agree the early - mid 90s was the best for rap.

If you must get one rap album, I'd recommend A Tribe Called Quest' Low End Theory. Rap at it's best

"Crack killed Apple Jack

Willie your Dad is right and must be my age. I live on that old Stax/Motown stuff and still wonder why Junior Walker didn't sue Steve Winwood for "Roll With Me Baby" back in the 80's. All it is is "Shotgun" with a different lyric.

I had the radio on scan on the drive home the other day. I heard this horn intro and went "Damn! It's the Bar-Kay's!!!" and hit the stop button.

Nah,it was just some young shit sampling the intro, mixing it with a beat and hollerin' over it. I cussed all the way home.

It's some good music that's out now, like that new Method Man & Red Man, Eminem, Raekwon, Ghostface, Mos Def, Jay-Z, Nas, AZ etc. All of them got new hot tracks out. You just have to know where to get your music from, radio and tv wouldn't be the best option. Internet is!

I was recently listening to The Coup. Who remembers them? (Not that they've gone away or anything)

In this land I can't stand or sit
and not get shit thrown up in my face
A brotha never gets his props
I'm doin bellyflops at the department of waste
And everyday I pulls a front so nobody pulls my card
I got a mirror in my pocket and I practice lookin hard
I'm lookin behind me beside me ahead of me
There'll be no feet makin' tracks here instead of me
But I can't disregard just what the news says to me
I'm twenty-one, so I've reached my life expectancy
At any minute I could be in some shit that kills my skinny ass
From motherfuckers doin the sellout strut or probably Oakland task
My relationship with OPD has been like one big diss
Long arm of the law, grips my dick so tight it's hard to even piss
So I forgot ain't even got a pot to do it in
Up at the church they're tellin me it's because I live in sin
So I grin, but nevertheless my mind won't dwell
I must be trippin cause I thought I was livin in hell
Capitalism is like a spider, the web is getting tighter
I'm struggling like a fighter, just to bust loose
It's like a noose asyphyxiation sets in
Just when I think I'm free it seems to me the spider steps in
This web is made of money made of greed made of me
Of what I have become in a parasite economy

...from "Not Yet Free"

I agree with you on Nas and Jigga, but Kanye my second favorite MC of all time and one of my favorite producers. His album lyrics are soft, but his mixtapes lyrics come hard. Which is funny, to hear Kanye rapping about guns and stuff like that. He also spit a lot of hard double entendres that might be hard for people to pick up unless they're from Chicago.

Ex. "Got family in the D, kinfolk from Mo-Town. Back in the Chi, them folks ain't from Moe-Town"

Jay-Z is overrated? I counter with "Reasonable Doubt." There isn't a more lyrical album than that.
