‘Black man did it’ hoax sparks outrage

Pa. mother's abduction claim latest in string of false accusations

Bonnie Sweeten, left, claimed she and her daughter had been kidnapped by two black men but instead turned up at Walt Disney World. She is shown here at the Orange County, Fla. jail.

PHILADELPHIA - It's an old lie, claiming that The Black Man Did It.

But it was trotted out again last week when a white mother from suburban Philadelphia said two black men snatched her and her 9-year-old daughter from their SUV and abducted them in the trunk of a black Cadillac.

Blacks across the country were outraged after Bonnie Sweeten was found in a luxury hotel at Disney World. Authorities quickly unraveled the hoax, but not before an Amber Alert, frantic searches and national news coverage that played into images of marauding black men.

Racial boundaries are slowly dissolving in America, with President Barack Obama the most obvious example. Yet Sweeten's story, plus the killing of a black New York City cop by a white officer days later, was a reminder that old ideas remain burned into many minds both black and white.

Furious and disgusted
Sweeten's story has provoked an outpouring of discussion among blacks, everywhere from doctor's offices to blogs. Syndicated radio host Warren Ballentine said his listeners are "furious, and they're disgusted. ... On a scale of one to 10, it's a 15."

"Their hope was that by Obama becoming president, the rest of America would take a look at black Americans and look at us for who we are and not what a stereotype is," he said.

The Black Man Did It lie last made news as recently as October, when a John McCain volunteer claimed a 6-foot-4 black man carved a B into her cheek (For Barack, evidently). Charles Stuart told it in 1989 after he killed his wife in Boston. Susan Smith told it when she drowned her sons in 1994 in South Carolina. Unknown numbers of black men were hanged for it back when lynching was a common practice.

And those are the ones we heard about. Law professor Katheryn Russell-Brown documents 67 racial hoaxes in the period between 1987 and 1996 in her book "The Color of Crime."

So after Sweeten and her daughter were found in Florida, with local newspapers reporting an investigation of whether the 38-year-old woman embezzled large sums of money, many blacks felt not only angry, but resigned and frustrated.

"Here we go again," thought Add Seymour, an Atlanta resident who works in public relations for Morehouse College.

'Lynch mob mentality'
"Not only are people going to use us as the stereotypical crime problem of America, but the problem is people believe it so easily," he said. "It's a lynch mob mentality out there. ... The first thing you think of when it comes to crime is a black man. It's crazy, and it's unfair."

It's also rooted in a confusing mixture of psychology, statistics and sociology, amplified by the media's tendency to focus on crimes against white women.

Seymour's blood starts to boil whenever people lock their car doors as he walks by — yet even blacks sometimes hit that button when black men are in the vicinity. "It's not just white people who act that way," Seymour said.

‘Black man did it’ hoax sparks outrage

Common sense or racism?

Raqiyah Mays, a radio host on Kiss FM in New York City, drew a parallel between the Sweetney hoax and the killing of a black cop last week who was shot by a white policeman. The black officer was running after a suspect, his gun drawn.

"How many times have you seen a black man running down the street and thought something negative? As opposed to seeing a white guy running down the street and you think he's running late?" said Mays, who is black. "A lot of us are guilty of it because that's the way society has been set up."

One easy explanation is that black men are convicted of crimes at much higher rates than any other group. So was falling for Sweeten's lie racism, or common sense? And does Sweeten's blond hair have anything to do with the amount of media coverage her story received?

Media coverage questioned
New York Times columnist Bob Herbert recently wrote about the difference in coverage between the killing of a white female college student in Connecticut and the approximately three dozen Chicago public school students, mostly black, who have been killed this school year. He recalled an incident from early in his career, at another newspaper, when he heard an editor pondering the story of a dead child ask, "What color is that baby?"

"Editors may not be asking, `What color is that victim?' But, on some level, they're still thinking it," Herbert wrote.

Even without race, Sweeten's story was both sensational and nonsensical. It began when she called police, allegedly from a trunk, and said men had rear-ended her Yukon Denali at a busy suburban intersection, then abducted her and her daughter in broad daylight.

No one had seen it happen, and Sweeten somehow still had her cell phone. Black men also are scarce in Bucks County, which is 92 percent white and 4 percent black.

Authorities discovered that Sweeten had made the call from miles away, in downtown Philadelphia. Their attention turned to the airport, and Sweeten was soon found. She is free on $1 million bail, facing misdemeanor charges of identity theft and false reporting.

During a news conference after the hoax was exposed, Bucks County District Attorney Michelle Henry explained the charge of filing a false police report.

"It's a terrifying thing," she said, "for a community to hear that two black men in a black Cadillac grabbed a woman and her daughter."

The "black man" was a stand in for the genie in the Aladdin movie. He took them to Disney. Can you blame the mentally ill for the stories they invent?

I always see this suspicious character hanging out in front of my neighbor's house. I think he's a gang member or a member of ACORN or both.

I think this is his car since I've seen it parked a few doors down.

I have to wonder about that. That leaves nothing for Latinos or Asian Americans, and with the Mexican border slayer cases going on, I'll say there are at least a few percentage of American serial killers who are Latino. And one of the worst I can think of, the guy who cooked an infant alive, was Asian.

What a joke! One man's racism is another man's "freedom of association."
Listen to rap music. Program yourself that your failures are the fault of someone else, don't pay attention in class, get a job you are qualified for due to a lack of education, buy the drugs being sold in your neighborhood because you decided to buy them. As long as black youth believes that staying in high school, getting a BS, MS, or a PhD and a high paying job is "acting white" they will never be successful. Keep in mind that when a community agitator like obama can become president on the brain stems of feeble minded white voters that anything is possible if a black man does buckle down and wants to become successful.

Gee! If someone comes to this site they must be a homo! The delusion goes even deeper, if you don't want to come to this site one must be homophobic. You keep fantasizing over the length of my cock.

I'm sure you couldn't run a fever hippie.

Why is it that "America's Original Minority" just can't seem to get it together as a group? They have been "lapped" by all the other late comers. Why can't they avoid drugs? Why can't they get an education? The truth is that many do. Unfortunately, many are on the poverty pimp reservation with massa' obama keeping them dependent on the Federal Dole. People have to confront their problems to solve them.

White people:

1. Don't shower drugs on black neighborhoods
2. Don't prevent qualified blacks from getting jobs
3. Don't discriminate against black people
4. Don't prevent blacks from getting an education
5. Do vote for a black man out of white guilt - oh he looks so clean! and he can talk! We have to vote for him or we might be racists!!!

Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, obama, Calypso Louie, are killing their own. Abortion is the number one cause of death in the black community.

Superior? What a joke!!! Which civilization runs the world? It's not black, or yellow. Who has the largest number of inventions, patents and wealth?
Didn't black Africans sell their own people to whitie? Yes, they did! I don't see non-white races out there embracing Christ. Our American freedoms are an extension of faith in Christ. The non-white governments around the world are dictatorial and are anti-Christ. islam is a cult. African countries that can kill off their dictators will enjoy their Christian prosperity. Many Africans are turning to Christ in record numbers.

I love my non-white brothers and sisters. Step out of the shadow of bondage like you did in California when you voted against the darkness of pervert marriage, learn to be conservatives, learn to do for yourselves, reject abortion, reject big government, and enjoy self-determination.

White people:

1. Don't shower drugs on black neighborhoods

Technically you are correct. A more accurate statement would be: The Federal Government showers drugs on black neighborhoods.

And actually, one of the biggest whistleblowers on that was a conservative white cop from LA.

Face it, government agencies smuggle drugs into the US for private interests and launders the money on Wallstreet. This is big business, one that Wallstreet wants.

Don't believe that? Explain the picture of NYSE Chairman Richard Grasso hugging a marxist FARC general in the jungles of Columbia in 1999. There's a picture of that meeting in the link below, but you can find it a lot of places if you google "grasso FARC".

http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0202/S00069.htm

And btw, the author of the above article is a very much white and very much not a hippie. She was a managing director of Dillion Reed, a Wallstreet investment bank.

I think a little more understanding and compassion on this topic would be a good idea.

If you look at the inventors and successful scientists prior to twentieth century I think you will find most of them were men of leisure with independent wealth or men who have been supported by institutions who recognized their promise. This was especially the case prior to the nineteenth century.

The advent of public education in the nineteenth century opened the doors to men of a more diverse background. But in the U.S. it was the GI-Bill that truly threw open the doors to men from almost every conceivable background. The GI-Bill produced scientists and engineers who for the first time in its history put America at the top of world of science and medicine. The power of knowledge produced by these people was an essential component in making the U.S. a world superpower. By this measure alone the GI-Bill paid for itself tenfold over.

Looking back, women were not so mysteriously absent from the society of engineers and scientists produced by the GI-Bill. Does that mean they were lazy and stupid? It wasn’t until the last third of the twentieth century that universities started opening their doors to women and the government made loans and scholarships available to them as well. Now more than half of all science and engineering classes are occupied by women. Today women are taking their proportionate place in the ranks of professional scientists and engineers.

What we discover is that when government makes educational opportunities available to a class of people, people from that class increase the ranks of contributing scientists and engineers in proportion to their presence in population in general. This invites the question, “If a class is underrepresented in those ranks, is it indicative of a problem in the educational system?” Indeed I think you’ll find that not only are blacks underrepresented in the population of scientists, but also urban children from similar neighborhoods regardless of color. Anecdotally I can say I’m personally acquainted several black scientists who grew up in the suburbs. I know none who grew up in the inner city. Unfortunately there aren’t many blacks living in suburbs, because of course the suburbs exist due to a phenomenon known as white flight.

As an aside, it’s interesting to note that few people can name that many late twentieth century inventors. Can you tell me who at Monsanto invented the different genetic hybrids of corn being marketed today? Can you tell me who at Pfizer invented their latest pain killer? How many women are on these research teams? How many blacks? How many Americans? The truth is: your intuitions about who and who isn’t contributing to modern applied science are probably intuitions that apply more readily to nineteenth century than to now.

If you’re truly interested in advancing science per se, or if you have an interest in keeping your nation in the forefront of technology and in maintaining its position as a major contributor to the world’s economy, then I urge you to support government programs that provide educational opportunities, support schools and universities and foster the advancement of science.

Good post Trish, there's no doubt that investing in the education of all of our youth is a critical element involved in creating a wealthy society. Two other elements requied are leveraging of new technologies and the full utilization of our workforce.

Lately we've been stumbling along and/or fail with regard to leveraging new technologies. We invented the internet yet our internet services providers are rather bad in terms of service/cost compared to what's available in other advanced nations. Our national transport system has not yet leveraged electric rail transport on anywhere near the scale required to answer our energy independance despite the fact that this has been a glaring problem for 40 years. And despite our nations many advances in healthcare technology, we certainly haven't solved the problem of providing advanced healthcare broadly to the nation. I guess my point here is that education and technical discoveries alone aren't enough to make our nation great.

As for utilizing our workforce, high unemployment is wasteful. When the banks and corporations botch things then government needs to step in and keep the nation employed. There's no shortage of suitable work that needs to be done. For example, move all those unemployed/underemployed auto workers toward building electric rail transport systems so that we can stop buying so much damn oil from a bunch of crazy arabs. And we should be employing MORE people as teachers to build up our nations intellectual capital. In California they are cutting education at a time of high unemployment and it's an absolutely suicidal policy. I'm all for quickly firing bad teachers but that's not what's going on in California. Some reactionary cranks say we cannot afford to employ our entire workforce yet the exact opposite is the truth.

Overall I don't think our nation is suffering from a lack of technical discoveries but rather, we are suffering from deeply entrenched interests. I'm talking about the oil companies, the cable monopolies, the health insurance companies... I'd say our economic problems are far more political than technical.

What does this have to do with the black man? They need to be fully included in our economy. Currently they are under employed, under educated and over jailed. Our government policy has been part of the problem here and many of it's policies need reversal.

I agree with your most recent post on our problems being more political and I would also say economic than technical. My post was more or less a response to one of q's racist lines about all inventors being white and
blacks being lazy.

That's incorrect. Look at rapes, murders even hate crimes. There's one ethnic group that's extremely over represented, and it's the brother man not the other man. The most peaceful American is the yellow man.

I have to wonder about that. That leaves nothing for Latinos or Asian Americans, and with the Mexican border slayer cases going on, I'll say there are at least a few percentage of American serial killers who are Latino. And one of the worst I can think of, the guy who cooked an infant alive, was Asian.
Nope, that was a black woman that cooked her baby. It's just that her name is China rofl.

Sadly, the people who run the world today are actually jewish. Christianity is also a jewish creation. Western civilization does reign supreme however but it's the culimination of a bunch cultures including that of middle easterners. Europeans have been the most dominant and influential but wouldn't have done it without gunpowder, which the Chinese invented, or algebra which the PERSIANS (not Arabs) invented. The English written system would also be nothing without the Phoenicians. Also, Japan actually has the most patents in the world for more than 4 decades. Their entire economy is devoted to research and making everything better.

I'm Hispanic, but pure Spanish and Roman blood flows through my veins. You must know that the Romans/Greeks/mediterraneans started it all when Northern Europeans were still in caves. It was us that civilized all of Europe.

Oh yeah, & the wit just keeps coming.

So tell us, punk: After drooling over the pictures of all those big black dicks, you still feeling superior with your 3 incher, or is your asshole starting to itch?

So your way of dealing with white supremacists is by calling whites inferior? Nice logic. What a way to end racism.

Racism will always exist because it is apart of our human nature. Racism did not appear when affirmative action was created. It has existed for thousands of years.

you said you like what Morgan freeman said!

so why is black history not taught as American history?

the reason being is cause we were told a lie.

that Europeans came hear looking for freedom and to worship as they pleased

but the way they acted when they got here paints a different picture.

they burned people for being witches, persecuted if you preyed or worshiped differently then they did.

the truth is THAT THEY WERE CRIMINALS AND COULD NOT MAKE IT IN THE LAND THAT THEY WERE BORN IN
