Bettie Page was plunging into the day's work: autographing pinups of herself in various Naughty Girl personas, with kitschy bangs, high heels, mesh hose and tasseled underwear.

Nurse Bettie. Jester Bettie. Substitute Teacher Bettie. Maid Bettie. Voodoo Bettie. Cowgirl Bettie. Jungle Bettie. Wild Orchid Bettie. Banned in Boston Bettie. Crackers in Bed Bettie.

The task ahead was arduous given her many ailments, including diabetes and stabbing pains in her back, legs and hands.

But the 82-year-old Page — a taboo-breaker who helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s — is not a quitter.

"I'm about ready to roll," she said in a Southern drawl, freshening her bright red lipstick. "But I'm going to go slow. I won't squiggle if I write slow."

CMG Worldwide, the company that markets her image, had organized the event at its Sunset Boulevard penthouse offices. The idea was to get Page's autograph on as many prints as possible, because demand for anything Page-related is soaring.

Yup,Especially in 1950's/60's America when thing's were'nt so 'liberal' as they are now.Mixing corsets,stockings & heels,he made bondage into a art form.Women back then were more 'curvy' than now & I suppose that's why Allanah would be the obvious choic to re-create those poses.

He influenced a lot of the later bondagers like Simone Devon.I think some of the older stuff is better than the new stuff.
My G/F & I also like rubber & some of the retro pics from the 70's are very arty.A good book is 'Enter with Trumpet's by Helen Henley who was on par with Betty in the rubber sceneThe was a magazine called 'Atomage' who was inspired by Klaw & produced by the late John Sutcliffe.(The last one is Helen Henley)

The Notorious Bettie Page was a great film. I highly recommend it to any Bettie fan. Mol gives an unbelievable peformance, her star will definitely rise after this. Its crazy how closely she resembles Bettie in the film. The film very accurately depicts her life and the events that impacted her. I saw the movie with two friends who barely know who Bettie is and they even liked it. Once again great film. GO SEE IT!!!!

I was first introduced to the radiance of Bettie Page in 1983, by the editors of a gay leathermen's magazine. They lent me a VHS bondage tape of Bettie modeling from the 1950s which was so insanely cute that I played it continuously during Thanksgiving dinner that year. It was the beginning of a devoted affair.

Miss Page has come a long way in American limelight from the time her pictures were the subject of a full federal obscenity investigation, intent on saving juveniles from the depravity of smut. She became a Christian missionary and no one thought they would ever hear from her again.

But Bettie's story was different from the average Suicide Girl. She was doing fetish photography when the subject was completely removed from any sense of camp or fashion. The closet was shut so tight not even a filament of sex-positivity could be imagined. The damnation she faced must have been entirely without context to comprehend.

It is this history that's the focus of director/writer Mary Harron's new movie, The Notorious Bettie Page. Mary was the director of my episode on Six Feet Under last year, and after meeting her, I marveled, "Wow, a feminist is making the Bettie Page biopic, I can't believe it."

I asked her to talk to me more about her adventures with Bettie...

SB: When I first was introduced to Bettie, it was within the milieu of gay life, the counter-culture that existed in San Francisco and New York. She was like the post-AIDS pin-up girl, a little ray of sunshine in an otherwise bleak period.

It was the same time when bondage and fetish were entering fashion trends, again fueled by gay and punk culture. What do you make of such an unusual rebirth?
