It's a Brazilian thing: seanchai has commented on this. Well, Miss Gay America started in 1972 when the first pageant was won by Norma Kristie (check the missgayamerica.com website). But I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that in America it's truly a gay thing, a crossdresser or transvestite event, whereas in Brasil transsexuals enter and win: but then we get back to the definition of transsexuals (travesti) in Brasil, which (again correct me if I'm wrong) includes both what Americans would call transsexuals and transvestites. (Oh, the slippery slope of definitions....but you know what I mean.)
