Ad-Aware, by Lavasoft is a good one. I haven't found need for any other.
Note: That's just for adware/malware bullshit. If you are looking to serious virus software, Norton, McAfee and others are good.

AVG is a great piece of software and has a free version that does great at protection.
I also use Ccleaner which is very awesome and free as well and is a Windows Optimizer cleaning registry and junk files and such.

I concur that the free version of AVG is great. The free version of windows defender as well (even though it is produce by the Dark Lord).
