I spent the last few days worrying we'd see another too close to call due to the way the states are laid out, I'm so relieved it's gone so strongly our way.

Chicago Guy, the President is essentially the governor of the entire country. My point being, the responsibility to bring about real change in a city or state, belongs to the executive branch (mayors and governors). The legislative branch can only facilitate change by passing prudent laws and not being a piggybank for lobbyists and their agendas. Even with that, only the speaker of the House or Majority Leader can really lead on new legislation in that government body. Do you realize most of the issues you mentioned plagued Bill Clinton, when he was governor of Arkansas. The educational system was one of the worst in the United States at the time and poverty and crime were off the charts during his reign and he was the governor, not a Congressman or Senator. Yet, he still became one of the best Presidents of the last 50 years (personal weaknesses aside). Bill Clinton had the vision, charisma and work ethic to bring about change and I dare to say, Barack is even more potent in those areas than Clinton was. Even Reagan governed California at a time when gang violence and unemployment were rampant. He also served 8 years as President, when failing schools, crime, poverty and unemployment in rural, poor and minority communities ran rampant. However, "The haves" aka Wall Street made a mint under Reagan, so he's considered a godlike figure among Republicans. I'm not even 35 yet, but I don't remember poor folks thriving under Reagan, Bush Sr and Jr, as a youngster. The GOP's preoccupation with war, defense spending and tax breaks to the wealthy, will always mean the shaft to the poor and working class American citizen.

Barack Obama is looking to erect a new millenium "New Deal", in which former U.S President F.D.R brought prosperity to the economy by funding massive changes and upgrades to the American infrastructure. This strategy provided millions of jobs and vastly improved the quality of life in this country. Clean energy and the total revamping of the country's electric grid are two things Obama is looking into. Barack understands the cyclical nature of money. He know that people will spend more, when they make more. Versus the GOP's "well hire more people, if we pay less taxes" nonsense. Problem is, these greedy bastards take the tax breaks and still ship the jobs overseas, so they can increase profitability and earn larger bonuses.

That debt was purchased by financial institutions the world over ESPECIALLY europe and japan and china which is why the bailout happened.

People are struggling to pay their mortgages because they did not read the fine print on the mortgage. These people should have never been allowed to purchase a home they knew damn well they could not afford. I saw one woman who makes 37K a year and bought a house worth 700K with no money down. Simple math can tell you that she does not make enough money to purchase that house. She did and now she is struggling to keep it. Why should I help her out of the mess she got herself into. I think it's not fair just to assume because someone is white, black, brown, rich, poor, male, female, gay, straight, etc. they will vote a certain way. There are plenty of old white people who voted for obama, he couldn't have won without white people voting for him. This is a big problem with america's political system, we dehumanize each other into segments, statistics, demographics, instead of realizing that every person has a voice and an opinion of their own. Just a quick fact check. Clinton signed the bill that deregulated the securites in December of 2000, right at the end of his term. It has passsed the Senate by something like 92-8 and thus they could have over-ridden a veto anyway. It also passed the House with a large veto over-rding majority. An article I read put the responsibilty for that part of the bill directly on Republican Phil Graham. At one time he was McCains chief financial advisor, but quit in the summertime. His remark that "America has become a nation of whiners", was widely circulated before he left the McCain campaign. Obama quoted that directly in his speech when he accepted the party presidential nomination in Denver.

But anyway the article said that Graham place the deregulation bill at the end of an 1,100 page appropriations bill, and that it was close to the holidays and representitives did not have time to examine the bill closely.

Deregulation of financial markets has been part of the Republican philosophy for a long time, as well as others like Alan Greenspan. So to put the responsibility on Clinton is misleading.

The wall street brokers starting packaging these sub prime mortgages beacause everyone and their mother was getting the sub prime mortgages. Once again a Clinton doing, he also deregulated the rules governing these securities. The reason that these companies like AIG, Bear Stearns etc.. went out of business is because people were able to buy insurance against these sub prime mortagages because they knew they would fail and people could not pay them back. When the people started to foreclose on their mortagages these companies did not have the money to pay the people who bought the insurance. So get your facts straight before you make any statements.

Just a quick fact check. Clinton signed the bill that deregulated the securites in December of 2000, right at the end of his term. It has passsed the Senate by something like 92-8 and thus they could have over-ridden a veto anyway. It also passed the House with a large veto over-rding majority. An article I read put the responsibilty for that part of the bill directly on Republican Phil Graham. At one time he was McCains chief financial advisor, but quit in the summertime. His remark that "America has become a nation of whiners", was widely circulated before he left the McCain campaign. Obama quoted that directly in his speech when he accepted the party presidential nomination in Denver.

But anyway the article said that Graham place the deregulation bill at the end of an 1,100 page appropriations bill, and that it was close to the holidays and representitives did not have time to examine the bill closely.

Deregulation of financial markets has been part of the Republican philosophy for a long time, as well as others like Alan Greenspan. So to put the responsibility on Clinton is misleading.

1) Palin is still governor of Alaska. If Stevens retains his senate seat, it's likely he will nevertheless be forced to resign for the kickbacks and bribes he was found guilty of accepting. Plus, the banks still aren't loaning money.

Whining? There is such a sad jealousy in this nation over who has what. A guy that makes that kind of money is not filthy rich, he is simply doing pretty well. That he should have to pay almost 40% of his income to just 1 tax is insane. That still leaves FICA, State income tax, sales taxed, property taxes, usage fees, so on and so forth.

Btw that was actually 1913 that the federal government re-instituted the income tax, right after ratification of the 16th Amendment. Perhaps you should research it and see the difference in rates and the income levels (adjusted for inflation) that it was originally set to. I think you'd see it was a vastly different system than what is imposed today. An income of 500,000 (in 1913 dollars) paid a 6% rate. Most people paid nothing, yet today you talk about people whining that almost 40% of their income is going to go to one tax :roll:
