when i lived up there, I liked Far Rockaway, near playland. You can take the train there.
Jones Beach was also pretty good.
I went to Coney Island the most though, and that was sub-par.
Went on a class trip to orchard beach. In that swamp/marshland area behind the handball courts, we watched as a severed foot washed up on the shore.
The teacher got us back on the bus pretty fast.

South Beach is nice but too crowded.
Unless you just want to see the ''sights''.
I prefer the beach in Fort Lauderdale.
It's so beautiful and peaceful.
And way less crowded.

Jones Beach is for tourists. Long Beach best place to hook up - right under the boardwalk. :D

Cant really comment on any beaches in the USA as i've never been...
I have just returned from a holiday in Cornwall... (UK West country) and this (Perranporth) is my favourite beach, the golden sand stretches for 2 miles and holds many special memories for me growing up.

My partner bought one of those new Sony cameras that do Panoramas - Not the best quality when enlarged but still pretty neat i thought. :O)

Since I live beachside in NJ, I would have to say Pt Pleasant Beach, it's clean and plenty of action on the boardwalk. Does get a bit crowded at times though.
