To this day, I wonder what else might be there. 8)

In 2001 a space odyssy the destination was Jupiter NOT Saturn. Iapetus is a moon of Saturn. Hoagland, I'm afraid, is a bit over imaginative. More to come.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iapetus_(moon) My guess is Iapetus, early in its history, was stuck a mighty blow by a collision with another large body. It was partially broken into pieces but most of the pieces reassembled in a partially molten state (rock and ice). These molten features subsequently froze into the shapes we see now. The unusual orbit seems to indicate this hypothesis.

Actually, for 2001, they were going to use Saturn in the movie, but the limitations of visual effects in the 1960's prevented them from rendering an acceptiable saturn, so they HAD to use Jupiter.

And Mr. Hoagland's credentials include: Former NASA consultant, Winner of the Angstrom Medal Award for his research, Former science advisor to CBS News and Walter Cronkite, co-creator of the "Pioneer Plaque" And he also was the one who came up with the idea of life being under Europa's ice covered oceans. This guy ain't no crackpot.

The US Government and Nasa ( Nasa's actually a millitary organization, NOT a civilian one as many people think it is. ) both need a kick in their asses......if you got time, look up the "Brookings Report", that's the reason we got these damned cover-ups in the U.F.O. and E.T. stuff.

Thanx for the Clarke link. Hoagland's "face on Mars" has been debunked assuming the subsequent photos weren't doctored by NASA. Yes, I knew it was overseen by the US military. They have their fingers in a lot of things. As for the structers on Iapetus we won't know what they are unless someone lands there. If they are the product of an alien intelligence they picked one hell of a place to do it. The surface temp. is about 350F below zero. BTW: Earth's moon has a structure called "the straight wall" which appears to be a natural structure despite its straightness. So straight lines CAN appear in nature.

And for Iapitus being "In one hell of a place to park" makes sence. If an alien race wanted something to be seen and get attention, it's a good place to put it.

And just remember, just cause Nasa says so, does not mean it's true....especially since Nasa's just a millitary organization run by yes-men flunkies who work on a need-to-basis.

For exciting Sci Fi with an alien intelligence theme I recommmend "Across the sea of suns" written in 1984 by Gregory Benford. I wish they'd make this into a movie.
