4,000 Souls
Sen. Robert Byrd
Last week marked the fifth anniversary of the start of our nation's invasion of Iraq. Again we are confronted with a sorrowful reminder of the consequences of that fateful decision by the death of four Americans killed in Baghdad, bringing the total number of American troops who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq to 4000. Each brave soul leaves behind devastated loved ones -- sons, daughters, wives, husbands, moms, and dads. Each tragic loss leaves a void -- a missing smile and loving embrace, an empty chair at the family dinner table -- that can never be filled.
As we mark this painful milestone, we must ask ourselves: what is the moral justification for allowing this war to continue? Can we honestly say that the disastrous mission in Iraq warrants the sacrifice of more of our troops and the heartache and loss that so many loved ones continue to suffer?
In March of 2003, just prior to the invasion of Iraq, I made a final plea to the administration and my colleagues in Congress to avert a war that I believed would reap sorrowful consequences for our nation. In a speech entitled "We Stand Passively Mute", I expressed my outrage at the fact that the United States Senate -- the world's greatest deliberative body -- stood "for the most part-silent-ominously, dreadfully silent" on this monumental question.
Sadly, my worst fears have been realized. The decision to invade Iraq may go down as one of the gravest foreign policy blunders in our nation's history.
Yet the war continues. American troop levels are higher than they were the day President Bush flamboyantly swooped onto the deck of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to declare "Mission Accomplished."
Four thousand Americans have now lost their lives, including twenty-three brave West Virginians. Almost thirty-thousand Americans have been wounded in action, many gravely, and countless thousands of Iraqi civilians have been killed.
It is long past time to start bringing our troops home. Our men and women in uniform toppled the dictator. There were no weapons of mass destruction. There is scarce evidence that the Iraqi government is working to achieve the kind of political reconciliation that could end the continuing sacrifice of our brave men and women.
At this somber moment, let us resolve to take steps to finally bring this tragic war to an end. In 2008, the American people must not stand passively mute, as far too many of their leaders did five years ago. Let your voices be heard.

not to mention more than thirty thousand U.S. wounded (using the counting methodology of the administration) and what has to be a million wounded Iraqis (for which there has never even been an attempt to tabulate). The costs to our society and theirs will be shouldered by our children for generations to come.

I've always had great respect for Sen. Byrd. He's old and growing feeble, but his command of the english language during his fiery speeches is without peer.

When the USA started this war almost nobody was against it. Now when things don't go as people would like it to be this war has to be stopped.
Yeah right! The American people chose a president who started this war.
Not once but Bush was chosen twice.
The democrats are fighting who can be candidate and McCain will be the next president. And he won't bring your troops home.
Sadly but true. This war won't be over very soon and the US economy will suffer even more.

My friends were against the war before it started. We discussed how it would upset the balance of power in the region among other things. I did not think that Saddam was a threat. Even if he had weapons he had no delivery system and we already had air power over his nation through a ‘no fly zone’.
As far as Bush being elected twice we all remember how he got in office the first term. We know that he lost the popular vote. And the fact the 2000 election was even close was due to public manipulation. Al Gore could not use the success of the Clinton years like he could have because of that bogus Monica Lewinsky crisis. Why is she never mentioned today? Because it is so obvious how trivial that situation was in reality. I say it was an illegal coup attempt based upon technicalities when the public good was really more important. Bill Clinton’s sexual escapades got front page news, but Osama Bin Laden declaration of war on US troops was buried to the back pages.
By second term with the war going on many people did not want to change leadership in the middle of a war. And he still did not win by much. He was greatly helped that his base was stirred up by the gay marriage issue. As I have said before, here in Ohio gay marriages were banned in a 2002 election. But then they put it back on the ballot in 2004 to place the ban as a constitutional amendment. There were some irregularities here with long lines in heavy Democratic areas and college towns. But the person whose responsibility to certify the election results was also Bush’s state campaign chairman.
I do agree that the war will not be over any time soon, no matter who becomes president. There never was any plan to bring troops home. The real plan was to build permanent bases and use Iraq as base for regional control. And the US is showing it's committment by opening the world largest embassy. Instead I see the US as going out the way of the other empires. They overstretched their capacity because of greed. And that is something my friend also predicted before the war started.

I was against this war before it started and plenty of people expressed the same sentiments at the time. From the start there was serious doubt concerning the existence of WMDs in Iraq. From the start there was serious doubt about the morality of America embarking on its very first preemptive war. On day one after the bombing, as Bagdad’s streets and buildings were being overrun with looters and the city’s infrastructure was being carried away for scrap, we saw how unprepared Rumsfeld was for the next step of the Iraqi mission. The premise that in the beginning hardly no one was against this war is just simply mistaken. Sure, now that bad has gone to worse, a lot more people see this engagement for the fiasco it is.
I do agree it would be tragic were McCain to win the presidency, because he WILL continue to drain American blood onto the oil fields of Iraq. I’m not so sure the competition between Hillary and Obama will remembered in November. I think the democratic party will unite behind either of them. Sure, there are some polls now that show McCain neck and neck with Obama, and others that show him neck to neck with Hillary. But these are polls where the Democratic vote is still split by the current indecision between Hillary and Obama. To truly see how McCain is currently doing against the democrats you need a poll that matches him against either Hillary OR Obama.
Will a democratic president pull the troops out of Iraq? Well at least it’s an open question. They say they will. I think they’re honestly expressing their intentions. We know that McCain says he won’t. I think he is also honestly expressing his intention.

Britain followed the US...as it always does. Australia followed the US....and has been rewarded with the free trade agreement it sought.
Every other sovereign country and the United Nations opposed this action. It was seen internationally as an excuse to gain a strategic foothold in the region, a means of securing oil supply and a diversion from US domestic issues.
No-one gave any credence to the supposed "weapons of mass destruction", the "imminent threat" posed by an impoverished country or vague accusations about Iraq's involvement with Al Qaeda - given that Iraq was the only country in the region that completely opposed Al Qaeda!
There are winners - US munitions companies have made a killing (pun very much intended), Dick Cheney's stock option with Haliburton rose astronomically, but the biggest winner is Iran. http://www.brookings.edu/opinions/2008/0320_iraq_riedel.aspx
From an outsiders perspective it must rank as the worst foreign policy decision since Japan attached Pearl Harbour. Now we hear the candidates (and I must say all 3 candidates) with variations on the same theme: we'll withdraw troops in a timely manner without endangering lives.

Ofcourse my friend. When the euro was introduced we had to pay 1.20 euro for a dollar. Now we have to pay 0.60 euro for a dollar.

Maybe instead of spending all your time here and sucking up to a pornstar in the gd section you should get of your lazy ass and do something about it. quoting articles from the internet doens't help very much. You have to much time on your hands, everyone can see that.
Just a hint: use that time instead of yelling to others who don't agree with you. You have a lot of anger inside you. Probaly because you are some pimpelhead student who cannot get a date.
I get the feeling that Bush won't lose any sleep over some moron named chefmike who is yelling and screaming on a transsexual porn site.

Are you serious? The US economy is not "dead" and I really don't think the Iraq war had any impact whatsover in the value of the US dollar. Yes, the Euro has strengthened over the past 12 months, largely due to the European Union being the world's largest economy.
Here are some facts:
In Dec 04, 1 Euro bought US$1.34
In Dec 06, 1 Euro bought US$1.32
Today, 1 Euro buys you US$1.56
Like I say - nothing to do with Iraq. What a strange suggestion!

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have had a direct impact on the value of the dollar. The government spends much more than it takes in. It borrows the rest. The US national debt has doubled during the Bush administration. Constant borrowing over the last 8 years has driven the value of the dollar to near historic lows.

You don't care about the troops in Iraq, you don't care about 4.000 dead American soldiers and you don't care at all about the thousands Iraq civilians who get killed.
No one knows who you are except your virtual buddies here on this site.
Shouting, screaming, yelling etc on a transsexual pornsite doesn't help.
But you are to stupid to find that out.
If it wasn't that sad it would be fun but all the dead people don't make it fun. Like i said you don't care a shit about them. Otherwise you wouldn't be spending all your time here. I guess the closest thing you ever came to a soldier was seeing one on tv.

Yeah right!!
So you are veterans because you say so??? Sure!!
It is the internet, just words on a screen. Stop making fools of yourself.
And Quinn, do your parents know you spent all your time on a transsexual forum?? Same for you chefmike??
In your country you are considered freaks, i mean guys who love transsexual porn, chefmike is the worst, he loves them very young, are not the most liked men in your country.
You can yell at me all you want just to take the attention somewhere else but you are still trannychasers.
I remember watching Borat, he interviewed some redneck about gays and told him that in his country they hanged gays. Yeah said the redneck that is what we should do too. 50% of the people in your country think that way!! Fine with me but what if those people found out that chefmike, Quinn and Oli love transsexuals, that they want to have sex with them, suck on their dicks, getting fucked by them you name it. They probaly want to lock you up. You know that and that is why you use those funny nicknames to keep your indentity secret.
Like i said no know you, no one cares, no one believes you, there is no one with whom you can share your "victory over me" with.
That is sad. Just virtual friends. Everyday here at hungangels, opening topics about a war wich will drag on for a long time instead of doing something, complaining about Bush whom you elected twice!! Not once but twice. What a sad and empty life.
What would you do without your computer and hungangels?? Where can you go??
Now who is making a fool of himself Quinn??????

Anyone can easily lie about their history and accomplishments on an anonymous forum such as HA. I’ve been a part of this community for over two years. I’ve been reading chefmike and Quinn for about that long as well. From their posts I know their arguments to be well reasoned and their claims (political and personal) to be consistent over time. I never had any reason, what-so-ever, to doubt their honesty.
On the other hand, PeterKisser has been with us since October of this year and posts nothing but off the cuff idiocies and personal attacks. If you want a better sense of what Americans think, you might try a more reliable source than Borat.

Why not? You don't know them. You just believe what they say?
Anyone can get on the internet and find stuff about the army, it is not that hard to create a story.
Let's face it all that chefmike does is stealing or borrowing articles from websites and post them here. You don't agree with this man? and he will yell at you. Or attack you. Name calling etc etc.
Just sitting on your ass and complaining is easy but doing something is another story.
He doesn't answer a normal question. That is why i don't believe one single word he writes. It's all BS.
I was in Nevada a couple of years ago at the border with Utah, little town and it was summer. They had some music groups but also a dragqueen show. The host had to warn all the neighbours for that because he told me otherwise these neighbours would be very upset.
In my country a dragqueenshow is nothing to be upset about.
Borat is just an example. Maybe in some parts of New York people are more openminded but in general Americans are much more conservative then Europeans. Nothing wrong with that but that is how it is.
Bill O'Reilly calls Hillary and Barack lefties or left radicals.
Compared to our politician's these two are very conservative.
I don't see Allanah or other t-girls at Larry King. Why not?
Everyone in the Netherlands knows Kelly van der Veer but i think that very few Americans know about Allanah Starr.
You can call me everything you like Trish (talk about personal attacks)
but it still doesn't change that the avarage American is very conservative.
Why else did Bush win twice? And don't give me that crap about stealing the elections in Florida because outside America no one believes that.
You voted for the guy, most Americans supported the invasion of Iraq then but now when things don't work out as wanted it is not fun anymore!
And the best thing or sad thing is no one seems to care, beside from some yelling and name calling on a porn site no one does something.

Hahahahaha, i keep you busy all the time don't i? Loving it. A selfproclaimed veteran who is yelling and screaming on a transsexual pornboard. If your veteranbuddies will find out that you love them underage asian transsexuals they will distance them from you.
If you have veteranbuddies ofcourse.
Still afraid to answer my questions... now who is having a meltdown??
The little coward that you are. Name and number moron or is that to difficult for you? A veteran you? That would be an insult to the real veterans. You cannot prove anything.

:boring Is this gibberish making sense to anyone except tinkleboy troll Aeden? Not bloody likely, eh?
Wow, so now I'm a SEAL? Earned a Purple Heart?
People earn their place here by the consistency and cogency of their arguments. Quinn, Chef and Trish have earned their places here, and are well respected members.
Will you be one?

First off, thanks Trish, Oli, and Chef. I thoroughly enjoy each of you. As for Aeden aka PeterK aka Bart Hoffman (his real name), he has already been pasted so badly in previous encounters that I don't care all that much what he says one way or the other. Honestly, it just isn't possible to inflict any more humiliation upon him than that which he has already inflicted upon himself. (Crawling back here after being sent away with your tail between your legs following one of the most lopsided, and hysterical, defeats in HA history speaks for itself.)
If I become extraordinarily bored and have free time in the future, maybe I'll get around to giving him yet another metaphorical bitch slapping, but, until then, he's free to continue wallowing in his craven nature.

P.S. Aeden, you were right not to show up for your own challenge. I would have hurt you........badly.
P.P.S. Congrats to Chef and Oli on becoming Navy Seals. Maybe, together, the three of us should invade Holland and take out that Girl Scout troop they call an army, just like the Germans did.
