Well, as Angela knows, my tastes are very diverse, so what I'm listening at any given moment won't really reveal much...but at the moment, it's Shawn Colvin's first cd, Steady On. Before that, Blue Goddes, the Crossing Jordan music cd, and the Cranberries (Everyone Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?).

The latest thing I have been listening to is SILENCE OF THE LAMBS - The Musical. If anyone in here listens to O&A, they have probably heard at least part of it. It is hysterical, dark, and clever. Definitely some great satire. What more could one ask for?

You listened to the Cranberries...as a child? Gods, I must be getting old. I still think of them as a new, young band!
BTW, thanks for introducing me to The Arcade Fire / Funeral. Good stuff.

Alive
A pretty diverse list of CDs in my car and next to my stereo at home ready to be played. Not a definitive list of the music I like, just the stuff I've been listening to over the last couple of weeks:
The Crystal Method (all their stuff)
The Pizza Tapes (jam session with Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, David Grisman)
Various bluegrass CDs (like the O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack)
A few jazz CDs (Ronny Jordan, Herbie Hancock and a compilation CD)
The Chemical Brothers
The Black Eyed Peas
Train
Shakira
Guns and Roses' Appetite for Destruction (rarely leaves the CD deck)
A few oldies: The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bill Withers, Creedence Clearwater Revival
I also always have handy a classical music compilation I put together with my favourite pieces (including Pachelbel's Canon, Rimsky Korsacov's Flight of the Bumblebee, Grieg's Morning, Delibes' Flower Duet from Lakme, Vivaldi's Spring from the Four Seasons, Mars and Jupiter from Holst's Planet Suite and a few others).

Louis Armstrong.....Jerry Douglas
Angela, I saw Benvenutto/Russo Duo w. a local drummer in a NOLA bar a month or 2 ago, real interesting. Enjoyed it.
Ectstatic, you & I seem to have similar tastes in music...among other things, but we are exactly the same age and that explains a lot I think.
(Was listening to the White Stripes the other day & reminded me of an artist from our era who performed as a keyboardist w. a drummer & can't remember his name, nothing new these days, biggest hit: "Do you know what I mean". Can you remember him?)

It's pretty much a few friends informally getting together & jamming on old country tunes on acoustic instruments for fun in a garage/basement & keeping a tape recorder rolling. Either you like that sort of thing or not. Suprisingly nice recording technically considering the simple setting.

I'm sure you're right; one's core musical tastes are usually defined during your teen years, and even as they might (as mine have) expand as you mature, those core tastes remain fundamental. This year I've been rediscovering a lot of 60s bands and performers I love but haven't listened to for ages: The Kinks, Procol Harum, Tom Rush, Richie Havens, The Yardbirds, and many others. I definitely like a lot of young performers now, in the singer-songwriter category and in pop/rock, but as different as they may be from the 60s, there's that thread there. And just yesterday I saw my old fave, Donovan, in concert again: at 59 years old, he still rocks and yet is still the sensitive beat era folk poet he always was; a great show.

Are you thinking of Lee Michaels?
Been forty days since I don't know when
I just saw her with my best friend
Do you know what I mean?
Do you know, know what I mean?
I just saw her yesterday
I just saw her, asked her to stay
Do you know what I mean?
Lawd, Do you know what I mean?
Her and Bobby were steppin out
Her and Bobby didn't know I found out
Do you know what I mean?
Do you know, know what I mean?
So I asked her if she still cared
She didn't hear me, she just stared
Do you know what I mean?
Lawd, Do you know what I mean?
And then she said
Lee you haven't loved me in nearly four years
You haven't noticed that I held back my tears
And now you have, but it's really too late
Better find yourself another girl
Better find another girl
Better find uh, another place
She just left me yesterday
She just left me, had nothing to say
Do you know what I mean?
Oh, do you know what I mean?
She's a dandy, yes indeed
She's a dandy, but now she's free
Do you know what I mean?
Lawd, do you know what I mean?
Been forty days since I don't know when
Do you know what I mean?
Lawd, do you know what I mean?
I just saw her yesterday
I just saw her, learn how to stay
Do you know what I mean?
Lawd, Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, here comes it now..
Hoooo, help.. me

Pretty much, if you're a fun of the late Jerry Garcia, or of Grisman or Rice. The music is a real slice of Americana- there's bluegrass, blues and folk-rock, and the renditions of Man of Constant Sorrow and, particularly, the plaintive Long Black Veil are powerful and soothing at the same time.
Think of it as three really talented friends having a good time while eating pizza and making great music together. It's a kind of latter-day Million Dollar Quartet (another legnedary jam session- Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash- who wasn't present for most of the session- apparently he was out shopping).

Yes Ecstatic, Lee Michaels it is. Since you ran down that list of ancient characters, 3 Jurassic acts I saw this year that killed: The Yardbirds, The Zombies & Love feat. Arthur Lee. All very, very good, esp. Love, don't miss if any hit Beantown.
Debated the other day about buying tix for this (hope links are allowed?) http://www.bbkingblues.com/schedule/moreinfo.cgi?id=2795
Still unsure about $75 for SRO in a crowded room.
I suppose I should make this relevant to the HA board by adding a photo.

This song is about the singer in real life taking a vacation trip to Pompeii with his wife that he's been with for 10 years then coming to the conclusion that he can't save his dying marriage and asks for a divorce at the end of the trip. Really touching.
