4 Men Accused of Posing as Cops, Ripping Off Prostitutes
NEW JERSEY (1010 WINS) -- Four men accused of impersonating police officers to allegedly rip off prostitutes have been arrested in New Jersey.
1010 WINS AUDIO: Steve Sandberg Reports
The Bergen County men, ages 18 to 22, posed as plain-clothes cops carrying gold badges around their necks and barged into a Hackensack hotel room shaking down two prostitutes they had arranged to meet through Craigslist, authorities said.
According to police, the men had allegedly stolen $200 dollars from the victims, attempted to take a laptop computer, and punched the women in the face.
Police said the defendants are charged in connection with two such incidents in Hackensack but are suspected in as many as a dozen similar incidents in surrounding areas.
Authorities believe the women may have been targeted in these attacks because they would be victims who may be reluctant to come forward. Police said the women have been charged with prostitution.
The men have pleaded not guilty.
